  • My father grew up in the small village of Coolock, outside of Dublin. He lived with his large family in a big house built in 1726. Sadly, the house was torn down in the early 1970's, but there exists a documentary film about Coolock made in the 1960's that shows the house. This prompted me to create this short film as a tribute to my father's family and to the house they lived in, Schoolhouse, Coolock.

I grew up in Coolock, played Hurling for Parnells GAA, in the village from age 7 - 21. 57 now, and have a lot of fond memories of the time I spent there.. All the best from Auckland NZ.

Good to hear from you, Jim. Seeing the Schoolhouse on film was like going back in a time machine. Cheers

Great video. I worked for a short period in the local Cadbury’s factory and drank in the Sheaf O’ wheat in Coolock. Great to hear history of normal people rather than just Kings and Queens all the time.

Patrick, thank you for your comment. I live in Nashville TN now. I've been to Ireland a number of times but never to Coolock. On my next trip, I'll be sure to take a jaunt out of Dublin to see... the Bank of Ireland...

Thanks for the comment and sorry for the late response. I think that the more we look back at our family histories, the more we find treasure.

Sometimes beautiful photographs and happy memories are all we have left. Sad that they demolished the house, progress indeed. Do you ever go back to Coolock? Thank you for posting, lovely story. Glad you shared it.

My wife is from Coolock. I have spent a good bit of time in Coolock Village. My landmarks are Kyle's Pub, The Sheaf of Wheat and The Village Latenight a fish and chips shop. We haven't been back since 1988, my son went back in 2001.

Thank you for posting. I would love to go back in time to the house and see what the village looked like in 1920.

@@crsnmorton I attended Chanel College from September 1961 to December 1965. The Coolock village Fish & Chip shop was at the bottom of the school drive, much used. The colour film of the house shows a Mark 1 Ford Cortina launched in the summer of 1962, so that would be the earliest date this film could have been shot.

@@paulsmith4467 Paul, thanks for the insight. I've been to Dublin a few times (I live in Nashville Tennessee), but never visited Coolock. I should visit the next time I'm in Ireland. I wonder if the current occupants would be interested in the history of the place. Cheers, Carson
