This was a fun watch. Fijian-American-via-Hawai'i Plastic Pasifika here with a question for the Kiwis that's been on my mind for awhile. Why do NZers refer to the other PI groups as "Polynesians" or "Pacific Islanders" when Māori themselves are Polynesians and Pacific Islanders? Is it just the context of being in Aotearoa? You'd never see that in Hawai'i, by comparison. Sure, we distinguish between different PI groups by their islands-quite blatantly, that can sometimes border on prejudice-but you'd never hear the phrase "Kanaka Maoli and PI" the way I often hear "Māori and Pasifika" or what have you. Always surprises me when I hear it.

I think in context in Aotearoa it just denotes who has mana whenua but you're right we are all pasifika and i too think there shouldn't be a distinction in an international sense. I also don't think we need to subscribe to the notion of polynesian, micronesian, melanesian which were terms introduced by tauiwi.
