- Elon Musk’s Neuralink recently implanted a chip in a human for the first time. The emerging market of brain computer interfaces, or BCIs, is in the process of finding its footing. In a world where AI is on the rise, BCIs allow for telepathic control of computers and wireless operation of prosthetics. But how does this tech work?
WSJ goes inside a brain surgery to see how the implants work, and breaks down what it’s going to take to get these devices on the market.

Creative ideas, yet it's unrealistic.

Thankfully the implant is just output and nothing goes in
The fact you think society will survive another 1000 years is funny to me.
Wait until they research about brain that control movement. Then people become robot. They've already done it to insects. Search : Singapore's remote controlled cyborg insects.
What if this technology fall into the wrong hands??
This is the beginning of the cyberpunk era.
I was just thinking about that....... Or was I?
This is amazing
Not the cybertruck, that one was a false lead

Nah more like Revelation 13:15-18 (King James Holy Bible)

🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh nah
This technology is very exciting. My late husband had MS. He had a device implanted into his brain at the Cleveland Clinic in the late 90s. I wish this technology had been available for him.
That BlackR0ck name is everywhere
It keeps my money growing
Vanguard
It would have been interesting if the WSJ had also addressed what could go wrong during the procedure of inserting such a device in the brain.
Well like any invasive surgery, the immune system can reject the implant, however brain is a special part of our body because of the hemato-encephalic barriere. But other than that it is just a reading device so it does not seems to have direct interaction with the brain, it looks like using an oscilloscope or stuff like that
Since it is at such an early step I don’t think anyone knows the true extent of the potential damage or how risky it is. I think it will take time to figure out the true risk.
This technology is both SCARY and EXCITING. The potential to help people with disabilities including hearing and blindness. Yet the introduction of AI is tremendously troubling. Check William Gibsons novels from the 80s in the cyberpunk genre. Prophetic.
This is a great comment. Everything that is ever invented is pretty much summed up by being both exciting and scary. We absolutely need regulations and such to be put on this!
shut up. AI is not dangerous

2 questions:
1. What is the difference in sensitivity between the different solutions? I'm guessing that the more invasive it is, the more sensitive it is. Is that actually the case?
2. If the guess is true, then wouldn't it mean that eventually we will need an invasive solution because detection of brain signals can only go so far when you are outside the brain matter?
The problem is not sensitivity, but resolution. Chips that are implanted above the dura (a protective layer on the brain) have difficulty with precise neuron spike detection, because all the layers of tissue in between the electrodes and the neurons disrupt the signals and make it blurrier.
You are right that deeply invasive devices have the most potential. There is only so much a BCI can do with blurry, imprecise spike detection. There is a much higher capability ceiling with the higher bandwidth, invasive devices. In the future, if we wish to reach the limits of what BCIs can do, approaches like Neuralink have the most potential.
Disclaimer: not an expert in any means, just someone who is interested in the tech
@@jmoney4695 You had me stumped at the difference between sensitivity and resolution. It wasn't top of mind that there was a difference! Thank you for pointing that out!
"Resolution is the smallest portion of a signal that can be observed. Sensitivity is the smallest change in a signal that can be detected." is a definition I found on the interwebs. By that definition, wouldn't a more invasive probe provide improvement to both?
Also not many people mention that the lower the 'signal' quality the more compute is needed to correctly decode the data. Also another really important thing is the electrode placement density.
@@DdDd-pl3nt If the raw signal is processed directly by the NN software end to end (ie. not denoised/etc first), wouldn't compute be largely the same? Can you expand on the electrode placement density?
@@thesadboxman so the more electrodes you can put the more different regions of the brian you can effectively gather data from. The issue is the signal "clustering" Or whatever we call it where electrodes placed close to each other gather almost identical data. For the signal, as far as i know the Preprocessing of the brian data should always include denoising, normalizing etc (what you mentioned). What i mean is from low quality signal it's harder to extract the features you want, or harder to train a model you want to use to interpret the signals in the future. I'm also not a professional though, still learning.
The beginning of companies to charge you subscription fee for everytime you move your body
i wouldnt want a foreign object inside my body if im healthy and normal
Sounds much like the “what do I need a computer for” they said 30 years ago :)
@@middelz2Nah, this is psychotic

Did you watch the video? They're treating disabled people, not healthy people
You are absolutely right this is how government will try to control people...
It's all fun and games until someone hacks the device.

5:04 sounds dystopian as heck. 😂
6:04 nvm, found the more dystopian concept: always being happy. 😃
Do they intend to do a more centralized and direct version of VNS (you guys should do a video on that too) [I waited 3 years for VNS for mood disorder approval but by that time I didn’t need it]😊 6:09
You best start believing in cyberpunk dystopias.
You're in one.
Very informative! 🧠 Competition spurs innovation.
This isn’t innovation, it’s evil
Hackers: this is where the fun begins
Most hacking nowadays is social engineering. You watch too many movies.
@@user-gy1bu9gf8l Sorry it was just a simple joke of course you know more 😔
@@user-gy1bu9gf8lthat is only because social engineering is the fastest and easiest method in most cases, but where social engineering isn't an option (say car hacking) they still find a way. That being said though, I doubt these will really be hackable for many different reasons
I mean i havent lost my hands but i would definitely want to remote control a computer or electronic device with my mind
take the chip....take the chip......
@@SamBlitz
Will do. As soon as it comes with a calculator plugin and the ability to control both computers and robots.
yeah, you can do it with your control minded hands
Its hard to stomach but Im so close to being there.
and it's gonna get so many more uses within the years that it becomes actually available, though it's probably going to cost many tens of thousands of dollars to get it if you don't have a disability that requires it lol
That "Neuralink Rival" is actually a company part owned by Blackrock. No wonder the media is promoting that company over Neuralink
Doesnt blackrock own everything including nueralink
Blackrock is an investment company.
Oppression is reaching a level never before imagined. To include “thought crime”.
@@longestvideoeverBlackrock doesn't own Neuralink. Neuralink isn't a public company

Absolutely beautiful! So revolutionary!!
..right..
What an achievement...a revolutionary one 🎉
Scary 😨
But for me I think muscle memory help me more than my brain, a lot of time when I'm coding something, I don't really remember the keywords, I feel like my hands are moving on their own and they memorize how to write and code stuff
Man’s plugged in 😂😂😂😂 2:30
I never thought I'd actually see a man plugged in, in real life.
Thinking it might be a bad idea to rush something like this.
Some people would prefer a glitchy ad-filled neuralink that helps their body move than staying completely paralysed, for example.
Humans have always rushed into things. We invented flight in 1903 and went to the moon 66 years later 😂😂 is that not a hyper leap? New tech has always brought paranoia to the older generation i saw propaganda about electricity companies back in Edisons time talking about electricity being the unseen evil
Or it could make people into slaves, zombies or Terminators... Skynet(Google, Facebook etc, the govt) could control the world using tech like this
What a weapon system dammm
The advancements in BCI technology highlighted in the video, especially the minimally invasive approaches, could revolutionize not just healthcare but our daily interaction with technology.
This has a lot of potential with good intentions, but this needs some government oversight when it gets closer to public accessibility
Oh there'll be 'government oversight', all right.
Yea because the government always has the best of intentions. 😂

We can already communicate telepathically naturally: Solfeggio frequencies! ;)
these frequencies are hearable sounds to the human ear, they have nothing to do with communicating secretly from brain to brain or heart to heart. Neither brain nor heart produces these sounds. They feed you with spiritual lies to sell you their music as "healing", when it truth it is hypnotic.
Can you make the implant generic so I and others can build our own open source connector, not tracked by advertisers?

this is quicker than inputing and outputting infromation on a computer outside the body. people will start using these to work better and make more money, and soon it will be the standard and a must. jobs will require it, and if you cant get a job then you will starve. you will be behind if you dont have it, like people today without a computer/phone/email
so what do you think about that?
Why not include someone working at Neuralink to comment about their work?
Can't wait to install Arch on my brain and play Doom!

Imagine being born in 2030 and having this technology feeling it as a normal thing…
OMFG watch Black Mirror
Synchron won't make it with its surgery process alone
So why is no one realising we are in a matrix😂😂😂
Why can’t I use this to control my computer as a normally functioning person. Why is all the research focusing on those that are infirm as if this technology should only be reserved for them?
Because it's scientific profanation and scam.
It's in it's early stages, medical applications get priority but they're using it as an opportunity to develop the tech for people who aren't sick
I don't have medical condition.
But I want that, because I want to control computer and other machines directly from by brain.
Although I will wait till the technology becomes better and cheaper.

When will Apple start selling these devices? LOL
What's with the bias? Basically bashing Neuralink for being 10 years ahead of it's competitors.
Neuralink - tested and refined without having to experiment on humans and then implanted the final functional device for permanent usage in a human.
Precision - 10 years away from first implant of a final product in a human and currently prototyping and experimenting their device with human subjects... also not anywhere near as capable as neuralink
Synchron - nowhere near as capable as neuralink, using a crude approach that will never converge to anything remotely near to what Nueralink has already achieved (inter cranial 1:1 neuron read/write ability all in a single package not requiring any implant in the chest etc.)
