  • Ray Wilton was just 19 years old when he participated in the June 6th D-Day landings on Gold beach. On that day he served on board a motor launch and was tasked with escorting the landing crafts through the German mines and right up on to the beach to help draw fire away from the landing troops. This is Ray's fascinating and emotional story.

    Men, what the fuck happened to us. We need safe spaces in college today, 70 years ago 18 year old were storming the beaches of Normandy while machine gun bullets flew over their heads and all their friends were being mowed down next to them. They were the greatest generation of humans the world has ever seen.

    I spent the summer of 1997 working in a hotel in the south of England and one of the costumers was a WW2 veteran who had taken part in the Normandy landings. I told him how grateful we French people are that men like him had been ready to sacrifice their life to free our country from the nazis and that I realised I owed him so much. He was really moved and happy to know that people had not forgotten and that French kids are taught this part of their History (he thought English kids hardly knew about it and did not seem to care). Then we talked for a while before I had to get back to work. The next morning, I was looking forward to serving him breakfast but his chair was empty. I was told he had died in his sleep during the night. I have never forgotten him.

    • @RelentlessxGamers
      @RelentlessxGamers Před 7 lety +160

      You gave him the appreciation he so greatly deserved, and for that you should feel incredibly proud. He would've gone to sleep that night knowing that he did something great in the world and left his mark. We will remember them.

      DragoonEnNoir +DragoonEnNoir If there was a "god" he must be the most evil person in the world.Only in ww2 50000000 people were killed.There are still a lot of people dying everyday of Hunger disease and war.If he really exists why doesn't he ends the shit people are living today.Probably the bad exists because god exists.Even in the Bible says the god hates us more than anything.If there is no God maybe it would only be good and not bad.See?Almost everyone suffered even a single time in life.God never helped anyone.God DOESN'T exists.Come to reality stop living in dark ages

    • @DragoonEnNoir
      @DragoonEnNoir Před 7 lety +35

      Mynamehas16Letters Actually, the Bible says that God hates the sin/evil that is in us... but He loves us. He created us to live in peace, in a garden, with Him beside us.
      We chose to turn away from Him though. We turned to our own ways. Ways of hatred, war, greed... like World War II. Or the War of the Roses. Or the American Civil War. Or like the war that exists between children and their parents today.
      "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways!"
      (Ezekiel 33:11)
      I spent most of my life as an Atheist, arguing against Christians. As I argued though, I found that much of what I believed was actually wrong.
      I have come to reality. That reality is love. That reality is Jesus.

      connor I agree. World war 2 is considered a western victory, with America declared as the primary winner of the war. It boggles me that the role of the Soviet Union is completely downplayed. The Americans obviously came out victorious after the war with their main battles in the pacific and their defeat of japan but it wasn’t the Americans who defeated Nazi germany and certainly wasn’t the Americans who carried out most of the work in defeating the Germans.

    My late father was an Irish immigrant who emigrated to America in June of 1929. He settled in Bronx, N.Y., enlisted in the army in 1942, and was 33 years olde when he landed on Omaha Beach. He survived that, and the Battle of the Bulge and came home to N.Y. in February 1945 to a Veterans Hospital where they removed two thirds of his stomach. When I was a little boy of 10 or 11 years I used to hear his nightmares. Yelling, pounding on the bedroom walls until my mom settled him down and woke him from his frightening dreams. And he was such a tough rugged man with a soft, compassionate and giving heart. My Dad to the day I die will always be my hero.

About a week before he died of cancer in 1977 I asked him to please tell me some of his history in WWII but he refused only saying "I served my country and this country (America) was very good to me". He was proud to be an American. I have many pictures of him of his days in the Army. He was a handsome, fit, and proud soldier. And I have a couple of letters he sent to his young bride, my mother, from overseas while at war. One in particular was a letter which he sent in early December 1944 just before The Battle of the Bulge began on the 16th of December. He had no idea what was to follow.

    Thanks Ray for your commitment and that sacrifices that you and your mates made for all of us, Myself i am only 36 and even though i was in the NAVY for a short period i was relatively safe, (yes there were some incidents on ship) but nothing to even come close to comparing with what you and yours had to endure. No words are enough to convey my and others like myself''s appreciation for your greatness. Know this your efforts have not been forgotten nor will they every be. This goes for all service members who have fought for our freedoms in the various conflicts we have had in the past to current conflicts we suffer to this day.
    My one true hope is that the people of the world finally wake up and relies our petty differences don't matter in the grand scheme of things i only hope this happens before its to late. Unfortunately i think it is going to take some cataclysmic incident to truly wake everyone up, or maybe it wont and we will continue to kill one another over BS and tribal god images or a belief in a god.

    My great grandfather died in ‘94 of cancer. He was a WW2 veteran and we have his old M1 Garand in his old room that i still visit almost every week for the last 5 years. I read his journal that talked about so many brutal battles including d-day. That shit is fucking crazy R.I.P to all the heroes who died that day

    WW2 Was so terrible I have heard so many stories from my grandfather who had fought in WW2 and my Uncle who was drafted into Vietnam. One of the stories that really hits hard was when they where going threw Germany and they where escorting a German POW back and he reached into his front pocket and was shot only for them to realize that it was a picture of his wife and child that he was reaching for.
