The RMS Republic: White Star's Million Dollar Blunder

- The luxurious RMS Republic II was an ocean liner sent on the Liverpool to Boston route despite being worth far more than either of those cities. Her sinking brought widespread media attention and salvage efforts on her wreck have resulted in view gains and one bad documentary on the "History" Channel. Remember, I'm an idiot with a microphone, not an expert, so take everything with a grain of salt.

Ignore my upload "schedule"...
as an Italian I can confirm that we all wear cook outfits, always hold a plate of pasta or pizza and speak nonsense very loudly. 10/10 representation, keep it up
As a Scot I can confirm that literally everyone on earth already knew this to be true. Also, Italian men don't leave their mother's womb until 26. This is known.
@@cleverusername9369 my comment was a joke and you ruined it with your prejudices
I suspected as much.
Glad to see another upload. Could you do a video on the Seeandbee and Greater Buffalo? Both were paddle aircraft carriers
Yeah that would be great
Republic was built for the Dominion Line as the Columbus. It was smaller than the big 4 as well as White Stars Arabic which was taken over from ATL(maybe Arabic was margianlly smaller and Columbus was a little longer they were virtually same size) and was built as the Minnewaska. It was one of the bigger ships in the IMM family for sure but I don't know where the whole "the most luxurious White Star Liner in it's time was reserved for making trips to Boston from Liverpool" thing comes from.
It’s an unfounded claim based on an unsourced Wikipedia paragraph. She was a pretty average ship for her time.
@@giovannirastrelli9821 She was certainly above average. Top 10 biggest liner for sure (not counting but 15k in the 1900-1905 period was huge). Notable vessel don't get me wrong just not the "most luxurious White Star Liner in it's time". The Big 4 and Oceanic are big names in the ocean liner world he should know this.
@@commodorezero Perhaps I’ll throw them a bone and agree it was probably one of the most luxurious ships on the Liverpool to Boston route.
I think the ice berg that sank the Titanic was also named Florida, as was the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs, the street Franz Ferdinand was shot on, Hitlers middle name, Stalins Mother in laws cats name, and Liz Truss’s tinder password.
Ahhhh Florida.
This man never fails to amuse me 💀
This ship carried my great great grandfather from Naples to New York in 1906. This is fascinating!
A great feat for the Baltic though. She not only took aboard the Republic’s and Florida’s passengers, but also at least some of Republic’s mail, according to Mark Chirnside’s book about the Big Four.
Oh hello I see you have great taste in ship videos
@@IlovetheOceanic Hey there Captain
@@CJODell12 hello
Internal documentation of the New York US Attorney's Office, which handled the resulting Harter Act litigation, states clearly that the mail was lost. The "mail removal" was designed for public consumption to reduce interest in the recovery of valuable Registered Mail.
@@etoile_blanche Oh well she still rescued Republic’s and Florida’s passengers.
That ending frame will never not be art.
Also the History Channel can suck it.
That so-called "documentary" was awful. It didn't even focus on the ship most of the time!
@@usseaglencc956 all documentarys the history channel does is sometimes garbage tbh
the only thing I think of when I think of Boston is
"Oh Cool!, worse New York accent"
oh also Fallout 4 I guess
great vid as always bud
Your sarcastic line delivery is something I've been craving so much from ocean liner CZcamsrs lol
Nautical History and Comedy all in one. I LOVE IT!
i was born in boston so this video feel speical to me, i suggest doing a video on the coptic class of white star liners, also i love ships myself and i really enjoy channells like you and big old boats as well as ocean line designs, just ask me a question about a ocean liner and i could answer it, great video and thank you for uploading it nautical study!!!
3:18 love it! great video
POV: you think your first but when you refresh your like 191th
Everything that went right with the evacuation and rescue of the Republic went completely off the rails with Titanic just three years later. If anything, the successful rescue operation of Republic’a passengers and crew helped doom Titanic because it was taken for granted the same scenario would play out whenever a large ocean liner would be in distress.
Very informing!
I'm from Boston too and I've been learning about ship disasters. I'm trying to find a full passenger list of the 1909 Republic during the collision. I only heard of this tragedy when I watched an episode of the 2012 tv series Titanic.
Finally!! Where have you been???
Jack Binns is pleased you didn't mention his role in the rescue. As you know, even in Heaven he's publicity shy...
What a curious name for a Royal Mail Ship.
He is back
Hey you finally returned!
I have a souvenir plate bought onboard her , I didn't know she had gold in her very much like the Laurentic then.
Can you do a video of the SS Oregon (1883)
Ah yes the Republic, the proud sister ship of the Olympic class
Solid video
As a Bostonian, nothing at the beginning is wrong about Boston
Absolutely brilliant
Yes the R.M.S. Republic did indeed send out a CQD distress single….BUT you failed to mention that she was the first ship to send out an SOS. This has been attributed to the Titanic which was not the first ship to send out an SOS but the Republic did.
Pretty sure the SS Arapahoe sent one first.
It wasn't even the first CQD signal, CQD was the original telegraph distress call. C meaning Calling Q meaning Everyone D meaning distress. He goofed it and I think he meant to say world's first SOS, even though SOS was kind of already in use by that point.
Gold
I had never heard of the Republic
What I think of when I think of Boston is "Hey I've been there! Nice town"
Anyone else hoping the reason there hasn’t been a video in ages because we are getting something tasty for the two year anniversary of the channel on the 28/12?
It will be a very Maury Christmas....
@@NauticalStudy YEY ship daddy is still alive 🖤
I forgor I was subbed to this channel
OH OH FUCK HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS UNTIL A MONTH LATER FUCK
UH, HELLO.
Dammit I was making a video on her
I’ve just met Oversimplified but with ships
I actually genuinely agree with you.
0:10 that's not Boston, that's New York. I know, because that's the Gino's in my town. I'd recognise it anywhere.
maybe ss nomadic and ss traffic?
What next
The second hand embarrassment I feel about Republic being called Titanic’s sister ship-
Fleetmate or cousin ...
this is worse than the time there were 6 casualties on the republic
🦀
Hey mate, have you heard of the million dollar blunda? Oy mate yes I did, it was so bloody dangerous. Almost everyone’s trousers looked rather ridiculous. Ha. Ha. Ha.
You live in New York or something?
Born and raised southerner. I articulate a lot in my videos and my accent gets lost.
@@NauticalStudy so that's where the Boston hate comes from haha
Thought we had a Yankees fan on our hands here, God help us
Nicely done video. But, inaccurate in your conclusion. With a $5 billion cargo, and only $25 million cost to recover, plans are indeed underway to recover her cargoes - of course! Those numbers make the ultimate recovery a certainty.
The Industrial Revolution emanated from Britain . I wouldn't knock her too much . America has contributed phuck all .
omg the italians :D
You goofed. CQD was already the standard Distress call, Republic is claimed to be the first SOS.
Jaw reveal soon?
ARKANSAS MENTIONED!!!! 🎉
That was some wack history
Its t SS republic that hás gold...
I park my cah down by the harbah
Will you be here shotly?
Republic as a name of a British seems hystarical
Boston has always been a terrible city
so nautical when are we going to raid wyoming
Good info, but what an annoying narrator......better off skipped or viewed with the SOUND OFF !!!!!!
Please…less attempt at humour!
That’s his channel’s thing. If you don’t like it, go to literally any other nautical history channel.
