    As a sound guy, I greatly appreciate this video. It's very stressful having to push the gain up dramatically for a mic due to the singer (or speaker) holding it too far away. When you boost the gain on a mic (turn it up), it makes the mic more sensitive to EVERYTHING. that means that you greatly increase the chance of getting runaway feedback (that terrible squealing sound) from the sound of the speakers being picked up by the overly sensitive microphone.
    Often times, I'd rather refrain from boosting the gain all the way just to avoid that feedback squeal. That means the singer or speaker is now too quiet to be understood or appreciated, but at least it doesn't hurt anyone's ears with the squeal.
    Some people think they are loud enough already, and some people are nervous around a microphone: I get it. But having the audience not hear you, or worse, be made uncomfortable due to feedback can worsen that anxiety.
    Another thing is that you may feel loud enough when you practice singing or speakimg in an empty auditorium, but when it is filled with people, you voice won't carry nearly as far. Bodies literally absorb sound waves.
    In short, a sound guy can pretty much always turn you down, but they can't always turn you up

    You actually do want to pull the mic back when belting, singing loudly. That's generally good mic technique. How far you should pull back depends on the mic but you should *definitely* pull it back - or if you have it on a stand, pull your head back - to some degree when belting louder notes. Most mics accommodate that and more often than not, no matter what your sound engineer is doing, that's what you *should* do.

    Hello, not all microphones are created equally. You need to distinguish between a dynamic microphone versus condensers. Also, some condenser mics (Audia technica 2010) are designed so that the singer can sing write onto the capsule without feedback, etc.

    You forgot to mention a wind screen. It will minimize plosives when speaking into mike.
    Also, if the speaker or performer has a loud strong voice, thet shouldn't hold mike close to their mouth.

    • @thehitmusicstudio
      @thehitmusicstudio  Před rokem

      Thanks for your comment. For singing most sound engineers do not choose to use a wind screen. If you are outside and have a lot of wind it is a good option but it does affect the quality of the sound. We do prefer singers to use the microphone at a close distance as moving farther from their mouth can create issues especially if you have a microphone that is not designed to be used in that way. To be safe we believe in leaving the control of the sound to the engineer and giving them the best and loudest signal possible as a singer. Hope this makes sense!

    • @donovanhill7367
      @donovanhill7367 Před rokem

      As the guy behind the sound mixer, I'd rather have a loud strong voice and have to turn down the gain, rather than have a quiet voice and try to turn the gain up.

  • @natanletthem
    @natanletthem Před 3 lety +3

    Overtime, I noticed on dynamic microphones, that if you want bass in with your voice, then be about an inch or 2 away, but if you don't want the bass and alot of low end, stay about 3 to 4 inches away. That is a nice distance for me...SBN RESONATE

  • @stephencarlson1242
    @stephencarlson1242 Před rokem

    good basic instruction, but different vocal mics have different optimal distances and a generalization about distance may not be accurate... Shure SM58 is 1.5 to 6 inches per Shure. Neumann KMS 105 is 2 to 4 inches. Not all mics are designed the same, they are actually intentionally designed to have different characteristics for different purposes.

    • @thehitmusicstudio
      @thehitmusicstudio  Před rokem

      Good point but our video is intended for beginners which are not likely to spend $700 on a KMS 105. They are more likely to sing at their church or school with a mic that needs a similar distance as the one described in the video.

  • @steveloux4709
    @steveloux4709 Před rokem +1

    I don't agree with your angle tips. Plosives are an issue that can be minimized if you sing across the capsule, rather than directly into it. Secondly, not having the capsule in your face allows you to communicate visually as well as aurally, when people can see your mouth.

    • @thehitmusicstudio
      @thehitmusicstudio  Před rokem +2

      You are correct. When it comes to a singer that projects enough some the plosives can be an issue when performing. For us we sometimes use voiced plosives as a replacement for certain sounds so the singer can work on increasing their volume and power during practice. Communication is important but we don’t believe in potentially giving the sound engineer a signal that would be soft and can result in feedback when gained up by the mixer. Our video is intended for beginners which are more likely to be in the scenario we describe that in the one you mention.
