If you're caught by the owlkin, they will examine you, then extinguish your lantern, effectively booting you out of their region.
If you do not have a lantern, they will snap your neck. With one hand. What a chad.
Note that this is if they caught you - but until then, they are watching you...try to get a better view... trying to flank you, since, you are flashing a lantern into their eyes, they can't make it out if you are friend or foe.
A player in another comment wrote that one owl actually stopped at a certain distance - while another flanked them.
This is compared to the Anglerfish, who are EXTREMELY territorial animals who will KILL ON SIGHT.

The DLC is amazing. I, myself being a member of being a little bitch, hated trying the Homeworld. But I knew I had to tough it out.
The music like the previous game often uses the main theme in a remixed way. The echo remix sounds like sad reminiscing version of the main song. It makes you wonder and curious, to what it means. The mystery is amazing.
The story, without spoilers, has no retcons. It fits perfect in the universe, as if it was always there, we were just not told it. And it's important to the base game. The retelling without text and only visual, is amazing and very thematic to the aliens.
Gameplay is changed a lot, and mechanics of the main game aren't used in some cases. It's a bit linear, but that's to be understood. Plus, some important discovery parts are easy to stumble into because of the nature of the game. Like the base game, you can beat it in 20 minutes, you just don't know how to yet.

I played the base game a few months after it came out. I think about it about probably three times a week, three years later. I absolutely adore this game. I’m so sincerely convinced I won’t play a better game for another decade. I hold it so near and dear to my heart. I first played it at a very low time in my life. I’m not saying Outer Wilds made everything better, I’m saying it was there for me when no one wasn’t. It’s a shame this game won’t see the popularity and love it deserves until it’s considered a classic. Echoes of the Eye put that spark back in my heart that only Outer Wilds has been able to achieve. I wish I could shake everyone involved in its development and tell them thank you for both the base game and the DLC and let them know exactly how much both mean to me. You hit it on the head. This DLC is a masterpiece. Outer Wilds is a masterpiece. And that word should not be taking lightly. Both are truly works of art.

Mobius opened my eyes about what Adventure and Exploration means. And for that I will thank them forever. Both the game and the DLC are my favorite games. In terms of emotions, the first game is all about exploring a star system and discovering what’s happening with all the excitement and amazement involved (and, to me, a bit of sadness). The DLC is more about mystery and yes, a bit of horror, but as you said, the « correct horror ». Without spoiling, what scared me the most about the DLC wasn’t the aliens, but it was « what’s going on with them. » The slide reels are amazingly well made, from the story telling, the changing missing on the burned slides, the changing missing when you start to understand what’s up with them, or even another kind of atmosphere for late reels, but I won’t spoil them as well.
I was so surprised the DLC would be « that long » and that good. I hope Mobius will release more games like that because it definitely is my favorite genre.

  • @Marqan
    @Marqan Před 2 lety +2

The trailer for the DLC was also pretty good. I was really intrigued by it, but it didn't reveal anything specific, and it did it in a way that wasn't misleading at all.
I think the visual (Stranger) vs written (Nomai) narrative aim to do different things. Maybe it's just cause I know the story already, but I feel like the visual storytelling gives you a more outside perspective, especially because it sometimes seems creepy, so you have this aversion to the people on the pictures (not to mention that they're constantly getting rid of you later). In case of the Nomai writings you're meant to associate with the Nomai and empathize with them, since in the end you're kinda working with them, even if they're not alive anymore. I do agree that the visual storytelling is next level, but when you first play Outer Wilds the text-based storytelling still feel amazing. I'm really glad they didn't go with visual the first time, so the DLC could have this awesome effect as well.
I also like how they made an awesome, cinamatic discovery of the Stranger, and the first entrance was bindblowing, but then you can just do it the quick way.
Weird thing is that I felt like the discoveries of Echoes of the Eye were much better than the original, but I played the original every second I could until I finished it, regardless :D
Also I just expected the DLC to be a good continuation of the original, but it surpassed it just as much, as the original surpassed most other exploration games when it came out.
Even though I think it's slightly too difficult. I'm kinda scared of horror games, and I'm kinda decent and puzzles, so people who have trouble at either of those could find the game a bit too hard.
Luckily Outer Wilds has a pretty good fanbase, so you can find a lot or minimum-spoiler hints that will nudge you in the right direction.
It's really hard to find a game that had such a strong effect on me lately. It's the kind of story that even after 1 week of finishing it, I just can't stop thinking about it.

I love that technically if i had looked around hard enough i would have found all of them on my own. In a way it does a lot to show how lazy a lot of puzzles in other games are, giving you a problem to solve to get a code to a door is easy. On the other hand, giving insights into small details and small difficult to notice things is amazing. For instance, on the dark mansion, i had a vague understanding that something was going on with the candles across the ravine, but figured i had just not figured something out yet

I literally didn't know they existed until I watched others play it.
But when I tried to light my artifact by standing in the campfire (im smart ik) and accidentally dying, and just laughing it off, and the second i look back i just see myself standing with the torch lit and the corpses missing, getting that level of shock of not having a clue wtf is going on was just on another level. I would like to add a comment regarding not bying the dlc because of fear factor. You can reduced the amount of direct encounter with the AI to almost zero ! And I'm not talking about "reduced frights", wich only makes the owls slower, I mean they are tricks that you can learn in the dlc to avoid the scary moments

I played the base game back when it first released and it easily was my GOTY, when the DLC released I thought it was too soon to replay the base game so I only picked it up early 2024.
Sadly I still remembered the vast majoirty and didn't enjoy the base game as much, but the DLC, it brought back that feeling of intrigue and exploration. Not a huge fan of the spooky stuff but damn it was a worthy DLC for this legendary game

Just beat the game after watching the first few minutes of this video and immediately clicking off because I trusted that recommendation.
Holy shit, I want to wipe my memory so I can do that for the first time again. I spent 24 hours going through every nook and cranny to try to find every last little thing I could about this solar system, and I’m sure I still missed at least one thing.
Time to explore the Echoes of the Eye, I suppose. I can’t wait to jump back into that shoddy little deathtrap of a ship.

I always pronounced Timber Hearth using the actual pronunciation of the word "hearth", so it rhymes with Garth. You know, like the expression "hearth and home."
But when I was watching Bricky's playthrough, I noticed the achievement "Flat Hearther".. which suggests it should rhyme with "Earth."
So now I just don't know!

When first seeing the ring-world, entering their home realm, and discovering... *that*, all i could think was "Wow. I could never have expected this."

The trailer has set our mind to expect something dark and spooky then we see how beautiful the new place is with our jaw on the floor.
Then we see the first picture of them and "oohhh, oookay....".
Then we discover the dream world and "oooohhh, wait! nooo......."
Then we get our first encounter with them and "noooooo! okay trailer you won!"

Finally played outer wilds and finished it last week. Just finished the DLC tonight. I LOVE how the slide reels feel like analog horror, the cabins feel like a haunting, the crypts, the darkness, all the horror elements that fade Away as you learn more and more is a perfect balance

I feel like the discoveries in Echoes had to be better, because they had set up certain expectations in the base game, that people loved. I'm sure most people would have been okay if they just Met expectations, but, to truly be remarkable DLC that felt like it really added to the game, it needed to go beyond the experiences they had already given us. They found a way to make something feel exceptional in the world of Outer Wilds that was already made where exceptional was the standard.

The radio tower is actually a part of the base game, it just doesn’t do anything 😂

When I bought the dlc I played through the entire base game again because they said it'd be best if you had a completed log before that, and only near the very end did I find the dlc.
I started the playthrough on the older version of the game without the new exhibit in the museum because my PS4 took ages to download the dlc and the new version, and since I didn't return to the observatory I didn't see that.
Anyway, after only having Dark Bramble and a tiny bit of the Hourglass Twins and Brittle Hollow left to explor I noticed a red glowing thing in the distance. Couldn't actually find it though. A little later I saw a weird tjing on the mal, locked on and promptly kicked the satellite into the depths of space sparking like it was gonna explode any second.
    Didnhave a map anymore either.
So the dlc do be kinda hard to find if you aren't super observant.
Loved the new puzzles though, only needed help from the internet once because the game kept on crashing when I tried to open a door with my scout and I thought there was another way. There wasn't but I figured the info out without that door open and now they fixed the issue I think.
