Time to Hoard Copper Pennies? Each Penny Worth OVER 3¢ NOW 👀

  • In this video I talk about hoarding copper pennies and copper price. Copper price has gone up significantly over the past few months and recently hit an all time high. Copper Pennies from 1981 and earlier are made out of 95% copper and 5% zinc so is it a good idea to hoard copper pennies right now? I bring up the actual melt value of a copper penny and I also talk about the legality of melting down pennies. Modern pennies are made out of zinc and not worth much. I also talk about how you might be able to use copper pennies for barter in the future and how the price of copper in 2024 and beyond can continue to climb. The price of copper can climb much higher than it is right now and with each copper penny being worth about 3 cents I think its a good idea to be hoarding them right now. There are some types of copper such as copper rounds and copper bars that I do not recommend stacking right now. When it comes to stacking copper I prefer copper wire and copper cents. Do you think it is a good idea to be hoarding copper pennies?

I used to not waste any energy picking up anything under a quarter since stacking silver that has changed. I now collect pennies and separate the copper ones. I work at a store and get about 50 cents a day off the floor in change. I save the change and when it adds up I buy a ounce of silver it has turned into a game and is fun.

When the debt falls in on us it's going to destroy the government and the Union.. We're going to start from scratch again.. This Union will be balkanized.. You and I have talked about this before, but I've been saving pennies since I was a kid. Before I understood the whole Copper story or anything about monetary metals, I used to have a glass coin bank and three 1 gallon pickle jars on my dresser as a kid. I used to keep my Wheat cents in the glass coin bank, and I separated the rest of my pennies based on decade. So I kept non-Wheat 50s & 60s together in one jar, 70s in another, and the 80s & 90s together in the 3rd jar. I had those jars for many years, but I finally got married in my mid 20s, and during our first year, my wife and I sat down and pulled all of the Copper pennies out of my 80s & 90s jar. I finally put all of the Copper pennies in a single jar, which was almost full at something like 24 pounds of pennies. I kept the Wheat cents separate still, and I still have them in that glass coin bank to this day. It's now been about 20 years since that point, and I've been passively collecting Copper through the regular use of cash. I use cash, save the change, and I sift out all of the Copper pennies and add them to the hoard. I now have over 100+ pounds of Copper pennies that I actually keep in what used to be a plastic cat litter container. I might have to find some smaller containers, as it's really getting too heavy for me to life and carry reliably without hurting myself. I also have about 25 pounds of Canadian Copper pennies, and I keep old Canadian Nickel bullion in the form of their dimes, nickels, and quarters of certain years. I probably won't ever hoard Copper wire or pipe just because of the space. Copper pennies are already in the form of small Copper discs, and are therefore already available to use for trade or commerce. That's not true of wire or pipe. My focus remains on Gold & Silver, so Copper will only ever be something that I passively collect. But yes, people should be hoarding Copper, Nickel, Silver, and Gold. These are the 4 monetary metals, but only Silver and Gold have the Wealth Storage Density Capacity (WSDC) to warrant actively seeking out to collect and/or hoard them. Keep stacking!

I started my stack quest/hobby by stacking copper; I'd buy rounds and bars because at the time it was really all i could afford, but i stopped at about 80oz. As of this year I started stacking the pennies and it has been pretty fun hunting for the '81-older ones! And the nice thing is that you really don't lose any money doing the hunt.
The ONLY THING I'd recommend to anyone who is just starting out hunting/stacking copper cents, quarters, half dollars, etc, is to have a "dump bank". Some banks won't let you buy/trade or sell back the coins you've sorted through unless you're a customer, and you obviously don't want to get back rolls that you already turned in. So find a bank you can "buy" from, and a bank you can "dump" on, and have some fun hunting!
Nickles are a good thing to stack as well. I'll break the roll open just to hunt for gems, but in general you can just buy a roll and throw it into the safe and forget about it. As of today, a $2 roll of nickels is actually worth about $2.50/roll.
    Great video, SD! 🙌🏾

I always check my change for pre 1983 copper pennies, & wheat pennies. 2 sheds gabby's youtube channel got me into it. You should weigh 1982s as most are copper, but some are zinc. copper weighs around 3.1 grams while zinc are around 2.5 g.

I use cash for daily purchases. Almost every day, I get pre-82 cents and/or nickels. I set them aside, then each month, roll my cents and nickels. I also put 1982’s aside, then weigh them and put the zincs back into circulation. All nickels (no date hunting required) are 75% copper 25% nickel, with a higher melt/face ratio than when silver was taken out of coinage post 1964. Gresham law is coming, when the half cent was removed from coinage, it had more buying power than the modern dime. Canada already made their cent obsolete. I believe the removal of the cent is coming to the USA soon, and then it will be “junk copper“ just like “junk silver “.

I already have many and I'm not giving up any of them, even the new most zinc ones, since it at least keeps me from potentially picking through them twice. Pro tip: make a see-saw out of a tongue depressor and a toothpick, then glue a zinc penny to one end to make it easy to tell what type it is.

I've been working on my copper penny hoard. It's fun. As well as the silver and gold. Copper rounds and bars are pointless. Sift through penny rolls. And when you are done, coin star, 1 dollar for usung the coin star machine. 1 dollar premium (what using coind star cost in average) for at least a pound of copper pennies. Then repeat the process. Out of 10 dollars in penny rolls, I get more then a pound in copper on average easily. That math makes sense to me.

Gresham’s law is becoming Gresham’s battle. It’s us against the machines! Talking to some of the lead cashiers in my area, they are required to hand feed rolls of coins to the self checkout machines, so the checkouts can make change.
Those checkouts are programmed to pull out specific coins: 90%, 40% & 35% Ag, Au, high % Cu (not cupronickel as far as they can tell). Those coins get held behind in a special bin for the maintenance vendors to clear.
So…either you hoard it or they will. Don’t let the machines win. Don’t let Sarah Connor down.

About 25 years ago I had a 5 gallon glass water bottle 100% full of pennies I had collected for 20-25 years(since this was before I started paying with CC and paying off each month). I finally thought it was silly to have a very heavy bottle full of a fairly small amount of cash depreciating so over the course of a month or so I poured them out and rolled them into penny wrappers. I think it held about $340 IIRC. Of course now I wish I still had it, but back then copper was not a metal you thought of as valuable.

Copper pennies are valuable and that's why they were in our money and don't forget about the value of having an official coin stamped by the US Mint with a fractional dollar denomination on it. The fact that it's several decades old gives it even more allure. 100 copper pennies is s copper dollar and just as valuable as 10 silver dimes. Money Metals was selling these for 3 cents a couple weeks ago but they are out now and I would not be surprised if no one sells them back at these prices as it would make more sense to keep them since they are so much more valuable that Fed Dollars.

@@jubblybits6155 We won't be measuring in Fed Dollars in the future so I'm using the reference points of value the US Treasury used and assigned to our money in the past. Why do you think a Silver Eagle only has a dollar value on it? Because the Central Bank was never intended to last forever. After it fails Prices go way down but get expensive at the same time since our metrics will change back to the old reference points. In other words. What's in your wallet? You might have a lot of high numbers on pieces of paper or you might have a lot of low numbers stamped on metal in coins.
