- An exclusive interview with the legendary Rita Coolidge! In this video, Rita takes us on a journey back to her remarkable experiences working alongside iconic Tulsa musicians such as Jim Keltner, Carl Radle, Bob Neuwirth, and J.J. Cale. She delves into her unforgettable time as a part of the iconic Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, led by Leon Russell and Joe Cocker. Rita vividly describes Leon's magnetic prowess as a band leader, while also shedding light on Joe Cocker's battle with drug addiction and path to recovery.
Rita Coolidge, in a career comprising five decades and millions of record sales, Rita captivated audiences with her signature hits “We’re All Alone,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “All Time High” and “(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher.” In a remarkable eight-year romantic and artistic marriage for the ages, she and former husband Kris Kristofferson earned multiple Grammy Awards. Along the way, she inspired numerous hit songs, including Leon Russell’s “A Song for You” and “Delta Lady,” and Stephen Stills' “Cherokee.” Furthermore, she co-wrote the iconic song “Superstar” and the piano coda to “Layla.” As one of the most famous rock and roll backup singers of all time, Rita sang for Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, and Stephen Stills, before finding fame as a solo artist with such hits as “We’re All Alone” and “(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher.”
Rita's “Delta Lady: A Memoir” follows her story from Lafayette, Tennessee to becoming one of the most sought after rock vocalists in LA in the 1970s, Delta Lady chronicles Rita Coolidge’s fascinating journey throughout the ’60s-’70s pop/rock universe.
The Church Studio is a historic studio that was built in 1915 as Grace M.E. Church. It came to life in 1972 when Leon Russell, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Award-winning artist, purchased the old church and turned it into an analog recording studio and home office to Shelter Records. Teresa Knox, a Leon Russell fan and Tulsa native, purchased The Church Studio and has brought it back to life as a professional analog and digital recording studio, event center, audio engineering school, entertainment network, and home to The Church Studio Archive.

I was fortunate enough to see the Tedeschi Trucks Band recreate the MD&E album at Lockn' in 2015, using their 12-piece band, and also including everybody from Cocker's band who was still alive (I'm pretty sure), plus a few extra musicians (Chuck Leavell, Chris Robinson). There was a TON of people on that stage, and it was fucking AWESOME!
❤ Great memories. Thank you for sharing them Rita!
Lovely Lady 🌹No doubt Leon loved her greatly.
Btings back many happy memories.
Thank you
What a cool lady.
She was very easy to talk to. We had a wonderful time!
Leon back in the day, introduced her as his Delta Lady. They both had out of control egos. He actually tried to upstage Willie at one of his 4th of Jul picnics. Maybe the one at Texas A&M.
Rita never had an ego.
been a fan of her forever. she was so beautiful and great singer..her interviews for the videos are as good as anyone. not sure of her age here, but her smile is beautiful. just a lovely lady.
She’ll be 79 in May.
She's a great lady!! VWODUHI A GI DO I
Honestly, I don't know what to make of Rita Coolidge. I heard Leon say that she thought everything he wrote was about her, and he gave examples of Hummingbird and Delta Lady, and he said they were not written about her. I also thought she milked attention by her relationship with Kris Kristofferson. To me, she seem self-worshipping. I've never been a fan, sorry.
You know, you just took the words out of my mouth. I totally agree with you! She sure has a big ego.
And milked her relationship with Kris???
How so. They were married for goodness sake until she left him. She put up with plenty
I will say that on the Mad Dogs tour Joe would actually refer to her as, “the delta lady”
So clearly Leon either told him that or Rita did. But even in 1970 she was known as Delta Lady. Does it mean it was written about her? No but it still could be
Ditto
It was the ONLY song he wrote for her
