    You know, for someone who likes a game genre primarily dependant on audio, you'd think I'd have this audio shit down when making videos but perhaps not, anywaaaaay PLAY DJ HERO 2 YOU DOOFUS.
    Not just a review but a neat little analysis of what exactly I love about rhythm games, here's why you should really get around to the spinny disc game at some point, perhaps now, ebay's not gonna open itself you know :3
    Also thought I'd have a go at doing some live action clips for visual aid, will I be let off if I pretend my clothes changing between takes is a stylistic choice and not a continuity error? You can tell I came up with them while in the process of editing using my webcam, pfft ~

    In a time when music games were oversaturated and uninspired, DJ Hero was genuinely creative and unique. Too bad it was sent to die by Activision. The devs behind this series deserved a hell of a lot better.

    I got DJ Hero 2 on a clearance sale for 20 dollars years ago and i would bring it to parties often. We used an old ironing board to plant the tables on there and play for hours, it was a classic time. This video made me wanna play it again, so i'll probably set it up during the holidays. Splendid job man. :)

    I got dj hero for Ps2 first (my first ever Amazon purchase in 2009) and was initially against 2 because the system was no longer being supported at the time. But then I found out the dj controller was backwards compatible and 6 years later I got it alongside the ps3. Now I do play it, but not as often because of my crappy adult life and I loved how 2 branched out from just hip hop mashups and more electro-pop fusion/remixes at a time when EDM was starting to rise. This game series led me to do my own takes on mashups with Chem Labz (/later The Lost Mixes) and discover the Mashup genre in general.

    I have very recently got into DJ Hero. I was able to get a steal of both wii games and a turn table for $10 because the cords were slightly frayed and they didn't know if that would effect the gameplay (luckily it didnt).
    I really like almost all of the songs, I tend to prefer 1's music but I think the song list isn't complete without both games anyways. I found a lot of people really like this game too. I've played the game at 3 parties now and they all think it's super cool!
    As a kid I was heavily sheltered and so my mom didn't want me playing something with this music but I wish I was able to play it as a kid because I'm addicted to this game now. I'm glad I'm seeing more people talk about this.
    I think my favorite songs are the Californa Love Remix, In Da Club vs Low, Grapevine vs Feel Good Inc, and every Pitbull song. Pitbull is sooo good in remixes!

    I would love to hear your thoughts on beatmania IIDX! The thing I like the most about it and the BMS community in general is the fact that all hitsounds are custom. It's one of the most satisfying rhythm game to me because at a high level you're literally playing the music by pressing the keys, and the background music is only made of pads and some incidental percussions. Of course it remains super satisfying to play at lower levels (which is still where I'm at). That and th crazy niche community around it make it worth taking a look into in my opinion! Just looking up BMS or BOFU on SoundCloud showed me the sheer variety of music made especially for the people who emulate it with Lunatic Rave 2, and it's all just made for the love of it! Some of my favorite producers from deemo got known by making BMS charts.

    • @LeeGeo
      @LeeGeo Před 4 lety

      I've really enjoyed what I played of BMS, I just wish that LR2 weren't so hard to setup and that the BMS files and skins were more readily available. Finding a good song pack was hell for me, and after resetting my harddrive and losing all of the songs I had I have no idea how I'd go about finding them again. Oh, and if you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out all of the other Bemani games as well, as they're all very well made and have great selections of music (even though it's a bit hard to play any outside of Asia lol).

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who's obsessed with DJ Hero (mostly 2). My love for the DJ Hero franchise would also be massively increased due to my neighbors. During my young childhood, I had 2 neighbor kids who had their own turn table/dj set, and I thought it was cool as hell. We would also host multiple neighborhood events, some indoors, some outside. Sadly, I wouldn't see them as much after elementary school. Between the franchise and my childhood, I always wanted to learn (and still do) to play myself.

    Oh, I played DJ Hero, 1 & 2. I loved both games, and I actually know about turntablism. In fact, I've been fantasizing about scratching records thanks to DJ Jazzy Jeff, Will Smith's friend back when he was known as Fresh Prince. When I first heard what could be achieved on those turntables, I was hooked!
    As for the game, it's real damn shame how the series went down, but everyone got tired of the genre all together. No more plastic instruments, etc. Plus, I'd say the line-up in DJ Hero 2 was kinda weaker compared to the first. I mean, they mashed up We Will Rock You and Robot Rock, and that was the best mix I ever heard in my life! But to be fair, the soundtrack pretty much reuses a lot the same songs and remixes them with others to make it sound original, which works out fine.

    I have both games on PS3, so I'm already covered. Also, I still enjoy coming back to games like Rock Band just for the experience if nothing else, as it was quite a novelty for the time that can still be fun depending on how you look about it. Also, Rock Band's backstories were more grounded and realistic compared to the background premise of Guitar Hero. Well, except for Live of course! DJ Hero was overlooked just because it was a spin-off of Guitar Hero that didn't appeal to the same demographic, and that's why we haven't seen anything more from it since the sequel. Though it would be nice if there was a new DJ based rhythm game that tried something different to appeal to a modern gaming market, even if it would be a very risky move.

  • @djrizla420
    @djrizla420 Před 5 lety

    DJ Hero was a pretty good game, but for me, it had a few flaws. Just to clarify, yes "turntablism" is a real word, it was coined back in the 90s by DJ Babu (from The Beat Junkies and Dilated Peoples), along with the word "turntablist" as a way to differentiate themselves from traditional DJs who just play records.
    I started DJing in 1992 and loved turntablism (and still do), so by the time DJ Hero was released I was a competent DJ, but when I played the game for the first time I was awful. I'm sure you've heard many guitarists play Guitar Hero and say it's not really like playing a real guitar, but for a DJ playing DJ Hero the difference between the game and real life is even greater, so for me it was really weird to play, it was like having to unlearn what I already knew, the sounds didn't always match what you were doing on the controller. With Guitar Hero, the switch on the body and the buttons on the neck corresponded with what you’d be doing on a real guitar (albeit in a very simplified way), but in DJ Hero there were times where the game would indicate you move the platter in time to a sound which is actually made using the crossfader. It’s as if the makers of the game didn’t realise that the crossfader is an integral part of scratching, it’s not just moving the platter back and forth.
    The other problem I had was the choice of music. I know it’s the same with Guitar Hero, no one is going to love every song, but I feel that DJ Hero’s track selection covered a much broader range of music than Guitar Hero. With Guitar Hero, the songs all came from the same genre, sure they cover many different sub-genres, but they are fairly closely related when compared to DJ Hero. I can’t stand the like of David Guetta, but to me DJ Qbert is one of the greatest DJs of all time and the reason I started DJing in the first place, their music is poles apart, more than any two bands in Guitar Hero, and worse than that DJ Hero has songs by people like Lady Gaga and the Pussycat Dolls, and that shit is just offensive to my ears. It would be like playing a Motörhead song on Guitar Hero and then having to play something by Simon & Garfunkel.

    I am curious given your disdain for P4D if you thought P3D/P5D were a continuation of that or if they did manage to improve the actual rhythm aspects. It'd be kind of interesting if they did feel like they had a stronger rhythm element while the two failed in nearly all other regards compared to the first game.

    I did play it. I had played too much beatmania IIDX to be REALLY into it but it was nice.
    Until the controllers just, passively combusted. I have two controllers, one came with DJhero for PS2 and one came with PS3 pack that had both DJhero games. Both controllers have issues tracking the turntable. Because the turntable is emulating an analog stick and faster it is spinning the "more" it is "pushing" into one analog direction instead of a dial type analog input like IIDX controllers with analog input, they really are tracking badly and getting rewinds work sometimes takes a laggy while or does not trigger at all. One of my two controllers also has the crossfader in finnicky state so the center sometimes is jumpy and jumps randomly between left or right.
    DJhero, even 2 is kinda easy, but they are fun, but worst part is the VERY poor quality controllers where game has as heavy dependence on analog control as Sound Voltex, or as we know it in "the business" - "WOBBLE KNOBBLES" - the controllers are far too easily harmed to the point where the controllers are far too detrimental to enjoyment of the game. I have my controllers in one meter's lenght but I never felt taking either for a spin because I was too disappointed last time.
    That aside, I remember a lot of reviewers who did get their hand on DJhero and 2, the original mixes are damn fine and both games have a fun and nice feel and... IF NOT FOR THE DAMN CONTROLLERS.
    and I am a guy who can open his shit. I changed thermal paste in my PS3 and changed shells on my xbox 360 and modified a Xbox original by hotswapping the IDE cable of the HDD to a PC while the console was powered on. All this yet I can open the DJhero controllers only to say "I cannot do anything to fix them" .
    Remember that the one change beatmania IIDX had in west, USA specifically, was killed by people calling it a guitar hero clone. The game that was there before DDR, and guitar freaks, which is the game that redoctaine wanted to bring but konami didn't so they took their Guitar Freaks controller and got Guitar Hero for it. And that game, years before even the game Guitar Hero involunteeraly cloned, was copying Guitar Hero according to journalists circa 2004-2006
    I hate this industry.
    fuck DJhero needed just better quality controllers to have longer life. Because I called it easy, but I did not call it unfun. What the game looses in being generally too easy even on hardest, it wins with fun original mix-tracks, fun visuals and FUN... MINUS THE CONTROLLERS BREAKING FROM MEAN STARE.

    I don't blame you for not liking guitar hero based on the first 2 games because they're honestly not that great. They're basically groundwork for 3 which was when the series really kicked off and got alot better quality wise and it didn't feel as slow and clunky as the first two. The best option tho is to just play clone hero so you can download any chart of any game or any fanmade thing you'd want

    As someone who "platinum'ed" all 3 persona dancing games I can tell you something is very wrong about how you experienced that franchise. The beats are usually pretty well synced to the rhythm of the songs; mostly to the drums patterns, but not exclusively. And I say that because that's my biggest pet peeve for making me hate a rhythm game: feeling like it does not respect the rhythm of its songs and that it becomes only a visual challenge. I feel like it's a really unfair characterization of the franchise you are making. We all have preferences regarding rhythm mapping, but to say PD does not use rhythm is just not true when I can play a lot of song parts without focusing on the screen.

      Elliott Belardo I’m unlikely to do one on account of it being a little on the simplistic side for a full video and I haven’t played it as extensively as other rhythm games, but in short, the UI’s a mess, the song list is cluttered and segmented and the charting and visuals are poorly designed.
      As much as I love Sta, it’s basically a poor man’s Cytus I.

    Let me take wild guess on why you hate Lanota.
    Is it because of the "special effects" that throws you off?

    • @joezcafe
      @joezcafe  Před 5 lety

      Who wants to talk about murders! If that were the case, I’d think much less of VOEZ, haha.
      More a case of Lanota having a slow progression system on IOS (having to unlock the highest difficulty is just ugh, no) and playing a touch screen game on a wheel that changes proportions and hitboxes being very unintuitive and awkward.

    • @whowantstotalkaboutmurders4177
      @whowantstotalkaboutmurders4177 Před 5 lety

      Sometimes, you just have to bullshit your way to get a score of 900,000 or more and get master difficulty, especially Stasis (Level fucking 16 at master difficulty). I don't know about you, but I like how you have to prove yourself to get master difficulty. But really once you know when the bullshit effects happen, you'll get used to it and have fun, because those special effects kinda make the song more fun.

    • @whowantstotalkaboutmurders4177
      @whowantstotalkaboutmurders4177 Před 5 lety

      Also I think Lanota has the wildest special effects because there are so many thing they can change in the circle like, the location of the circle, the size, rotation, rewinding notes, changing speed of notes. And about the IOS thing, I don't know about that because I play Lanota on an android phone and don't see any slow progressions.

    2:40: Your sales figures are WAY off. Those were just for the first month.
    And for a video called "Not enough of you played DJ Hero", you didn't show enough of DJ Hero, instead opting to show other crappy Sony rhythm games. What an effing waste of my time.
