Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah just graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for 3+ years and living together in Minneapolis for a year. On June 15th, 2019 they got engaged!!!! Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
I would just like to point out that this fan base/community always has the nicest comments and yea, I know there’s always some bad eggs...but it’s always such a nice break from my daily grind to watch these videos and read the comments and smile :) sorry this comment is not related to anything, just wanted to point that out :) it makes me SO happy.

For brain freeze: If you are able, raise your tongue to your soft palate and hold it there. It helps to warm the blood vessels that are close to the surface and alleviates the discomfort pretty quickly.
Wish I'd known that when I was a kid. 😭
What also works is close your mouth and breath deeply through your nose. It warms up the nasal passages up to the brain.
Julie Jones or if your finishers are clean...stick your thumb in the roof of your mouth!! That works well too! I don’t get a brain freeze I get a chest freeze, not sure why!

Hi Shane, here in Portugal a baby called Matilde was born with the same disease you have and her parents are trying to raise 2 million euros to get Zolgensma, the only medication that could save her life. We hope it all goes well and she could survive. This treatment is one shot only could cure sma and it's the world's most expensive medication. Praying for this baby's life.

Glad you’re back at your parents’ home and you got home safe! I had a 1894 house with an wheelchair elevator lift from the ground entrance up to the 1st floor that I rented. The house had a enclosed porch that was added on by the former owner and he also had the wheelchair elevator lift installed.

Hannah you’re amazing! Of all the things you do, you can “play” the guitar too! I love Shane’s facial expressions when he’s telling his stories, but the brain freeze expression was amazing. I guess we all look like that though. Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth to stop the freeze.
