- Pres. Obama delivered a national address to students across the country to talk to them about the importance of education. He spoke to a group of students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA.

i agree with you 100% DorjePawo!! When obama was speaking here in AZ about the mortgage crisis we are having, his motorcade drove right past my families business. My dad stood outside waiting for him on McDowell and the 143hwy. They were going about 40mph. When the limo went passed my dad standing there, he raised his fist at him shaking it like he wanted to fight him. of course i wanted to do something different than just raise my fist. Maybe make a banner saying like.. "Go back to Kenya"
This is possibly one of the best speeches I have ever heard. Deserves more than five stars.

I'm not a US citizen, not an Obama fan, not a US Foreign Policy fan. but this speech was good.. it was aimed to arouse students' interests in learning and to give them hope to make/decide a better future for themselves. why do people diss him? this was a great speech. you guys should be proud to have a president that's able to talk like this to the children. a lot of us don't have this kind of motivation outside the US.. this isn't about liberals or conservatives, this is about YOUR children!

Edit: I've just realised I was watching this whilst Obama was still president. A lot of time has passed and I can still remember watching this like it was yesterday.

This is the greatest speech of his administration so far, mesmerising, hypnotic and so true, powerful & inspiring. Look at the kids & teachers, they are so captivated byy what he is saying & the way he is saying it. The message is so clear. Respect Mr President !
On my first day of school in 6th grade, my first period English teacher made us watch this speech live on the Promethan board. It really opened my eyes to the type of person president Obama was, and his speech made the rest of the first day of school easier to take in. I miss him.

I come from an Asian country and let me say this. My President and Prime Minister have been delivering speeches about education all the time. I believe Obama is doing the same thing, that is emphasizing the importance of education, for the benefits of your (Americans') future. Trust me, my brothers and sisters from America. Listen to this man's advice. Work hard and do well in school. Cause it's gonna shape your future.

A long awaited speech on education. When is the last time a President gave a proper speech to encourage our young kids to stay in school and do well to serve the people. We got the right candidate in the White House. That's my firm belief! Go Obama!

This was an address to us students! Leave your opinions at the door on any other subjects and listen to what he has to say. He is intelligent and is convincing the youth to stay in school, work hard, and be productive.

He speaks the truth, no matter who you voted for... It would be interesting to measure the US's dropout rates and educational rankings in 2012 vs 2008. I pray that our children will adhere to his message and we as parents do everything to support their ambitions.

I came back from Iraq, & saw the that the fight i was fighting for was nothing. I was born in another country but my family believed being america we should speak english & fight for our country. My mom accidentally signed for me to not watch this speech live when my school sent me home with a permission slip. So me and this girl were the only ones from our class who couldn’t watch it and had to be put it in a separate room lol I’m finally watching this speech 14 years later
You see lots of students bored and yawning. They are normal.
Don't miss the few kids but for sure they are there, thinking what this guy went through and what he meant.
Those kids are talented. They will definitely make this world a better place.
1. Education was better in USSR. I used the soviet system education and I'm in pre-calculus as a freshman.

3. You get paid more than that, plus money used to mean much less, for you get much more things for free (like healthcare).

We needed permission slips at my high school to watch it.. i forgot to get it signed so i couldnt watch it :( watching it now though i didnt learn anything. He didnt encourage me or persuade me to do anything i dont already do.

Nobody succeeds everyday.. We learn from our failures and THAT leads to our success. THAT's what he's saying.
Everyone should RESPECT the president . No matter who he or she may be.
This speech was not shown at my kids school because some parents wrote notes to the principal saying they did not want it shown to their kids. I live in a republican area and it is unfortunate these parents made a choice for all of us. The speech was fine and was only trying to teach kids to be responsible. Not all children have good parents or positive role models in their lives and maybe the speech didn't affect every child but, if it encouraged one then that is something positive!
I like this video, I like this man, he shows himself as another person on this planet. Isn't this what we want in a leader?

I am a huge critic of Obama. Don't care for him at all but I can give credit where credit is due and this was a very inspirational speech preaching personal responsibility! You just usually don't here that from liberals. Excellent job on the speech though. Very Genuine.

This message is like every other messages that good parents give to their children. If there's a survey done on students about how much parents repeatedly speak this message to their children, you will see those good students say their parents repeat this message on and on.
What you will not see is many parents say the same thing to children not their own. The truth is they would rather keep the competition small.

Beautiful. It's so sad that some students, because of partisan bickering, did not get a chance to hear this motivational message from President Obama. To say that they missed out is an understatement.
The man shook every hand that reached out to him after the speech. He didn't miss one. Good speech.
All people, but especially people of color, that are disabled, and/or are otherwise in the minority, NEED, MUST HAVE a good education.
As a professional African American female, I can tell you all that doors that have been opened to me, would NOT have been opened to me.
Trust me, ask almost any person that has education (regardless of race) and 99% of them will tell you it is paramount!
Folks who do not have degrees are usually the ones putting down education! Go figure!

Obama without doubt is one of the best speakers of all time. The way he can engage virtually all sorts of audience through his tone and sincereness is rarely seen with politicians. You can tell he means what he says, which makes his speeches so effective. It is just unfortunate this GFC has fell on his head.

Such a good point. All this Bipartisan back n forth is so tiring and counter productive.
Imagine working in a bipartisan business. The company would fail because half the team would be working against whatever the corporate mission is, and the board of directors would be completely polarized.
We just learned about FDR and his fireside chats, when everyone felt that the president was speaking to them personally. Watching this, being a junior in high school, I feel like he's talking directly to me.

I love the whole "This guy say anything without a teleprompter" thing take a look at how his head sweeps across the crowd in every speech and then go check out G.W s speeches where he is not moving his head and reading every word placed before the camera.

my mother had a heart attack at age 50, and another at age 51, so don't preach to me about sudden illness. we save money, and had enough to cover the deductable and whatever else we needed.
obama is inspiring, god bless him. I wish he would have stressed that education gives you SELF respect also, in addition to all the things he mentioned. for me, that has been the greatest blessing of a higher education.

I have always disagreed with many of Obama's policies, especially some of the Heath Care Reform bill and the Stimulus package. But there is nothing wrong with this speech.
