- How you hold putter makes a huge difference to your feel, your pace control, where you strike the putter and essentially how many putts you make out on the golf course. This is the Putter grip that has been trending all over social media and it is the Japanese grip! I love it and its the best grip i have used for my putting stroke in a long time! In this video we discuss exactly how to hold the putter, how your left and right elbow should be placed to get the maximum control and make more of the must make putts out on the golf course!!

*Who’s going to copy me and use this grip?*
i use a 2 thumb grip that is very similar to this already i understand exactly what you mean by even shoulders and arm length and grip pressure from both hands. i cant get my buddy to even try it. i love the big jumbo grips it helps out doing this. im definitely taking this to the course and giving it a shot. great vid.
I tried it last weekend. Worked for me.
Im gonna try it. My putting is terrible. What would it hurt...lol😂😂😂
I’m a newbie and I love this even grip
I saw this the other day and could not figure it out because the guys explanation did not make sense. You however made it simple and I will try it because the right hand low causes exactly what you said. I watch your videos all the time thank you and please keep posting
Switched to this grip 2 months ago, love it! Only downside was for the first 20 greens I would forget how to fold/weave my fingers lol
Interesting I’ll will be trying this Hopefully it will help with stopping 3 putts!
Hahaha also afraid that I will forget 😅 🤭
Great stuff Alex. I'll def give this a shot. I'd love to see a new video on putting now that we have this new grip. Maybe green undulations, downhill, double breaks, etc.
Love the content. Keep it up!!
I'm working on this technique. I'm improving my consistency and regularity. Thanks Alex, greetings from Italy
Another succinct video Alex, thank you. Years ago, and I mean YEARS, I was phootographing the opening of a driving range. One of the activities was a demonstration of 'fat' putter grips - they were pretty new at the time. Anyway, the guy from the grip company showed me this very grip. However, not playing much at the time, and having a 'normal' sized grip, I forgot all about it. Can't wait to try it on grass (I have already on carpet!). Thanks again.
Thank you Alex! I have suffered with the putting yips for several years. I tried a modified version of this grip and it has given me back the confidence I once had with my putter.
Thought I'd give this a go earlier in the week with my 2ball mallet putter. Lucky it has a fat grip and yes it felt abiy janky like any grip change does but wow am blown away by results. Not only am I now rock solid inside 10 feet but much better at feel and lag. Am an A grade golfer and this over traditional grip has been def the biggest easy gain. Am playing the most good and consistent golf now with this grip change. no more pulled putts prayer 🙏 grip works! Cheers and subbed!
I am trying this new grip on the practice green since struggling with my putting late in the summer. I have found that it works much better for me using the Super Stroke 5.0 grip. The flat front of the large grip gives me a solid place to place both thumbs side by side. This is a big grip and too large for many guys but if you have big hands, I suggest trying this hand placement with a larger grip. Seems to be working for me.
Will definitely try this. Thanks Alex
Wow! I've always tinkered with my putting grip Alex and that's exactly how I feel when gripping with one hand lower than the other. Now I can't wait to try it when I get back to Laos next week. Thanks for sharing this clip Alex!
Thanks for showing us this grip I’ve been hearing so much about!
Anther great tutorial. Can’t wait to give this a go over the weekend.
LOL, Alex, I just tried out a new grip yesterday at the course practice facility and it was great and now you drop this!! 100% I'm going there now to try it out!! I'll probably never feel comfortable on the greens but you never know!! Thanks!
Something new to try! Thanks for the suggestion Alex!
I switched to one of those Superstroke fat grips and changed my grip to a variation of this - a wraparound with both hands at the same level. It works well and the fat grip helps. I'll try this interlocking grip to see if there's more stability through the stroke.
best thing i ever learned for my putting its incredible
Can't wait to try this new grip!
Used this grip this morning..been smiling all day
This is intriguing. I have a pendulum putting stroke. Am a good putter. Never have had to worry about it. If my mid iron and wood game were as good as my putting I would be much nearer to being a scratch golfer instead of low to mid 80s. I say this only to say that I would normally never even consider altering my putting. But ... This makes perfect sense, especially with a pendulum stroke. Can't wait to try it today. I think it will make putting even easier than I already find it to be. Thank you!!
i saw it on a short three weeks ago. its fantastic. just takes a min to learn but know my hands go right to the grip when i pick up the putter
Wow, a completely new why of gripping the shaft! I know what I'm going to be doing tonight!!
I’ve actually switched to a variation of this grip about 10 days ago. Left on top… three bottom fingers… then two middle fingers on right hand comes underneath. I find the fingers on each hand pull the edge of the grip rather than hold in the conventional sense. For me, it requires less strength to hold the putter grip, and as you described, even pressure, palms towards each other and a true putt. I’ve been testing it with a devil ball and it’s creating straight putts. So it’s been very good so far for me. At least my version of it.
Same here. Alex's version is too weak for me, I feel the club slips out.
Sometimes I use only two fingers of my left hand (the small finger below), but most of the time - all 3 left bottom fingers on the grip.
well demonstrated Alex
Similar to how I hold the putter but looks a lot more solid, definitely going to give this a try at the weekend. Cheers Alex 👍🏻
I will try it for sure.
Ian Baker Finch was using this ( or very similar )
I followed his advice and have been using it for aforementioned 30 yrs
I switched to this when the vid came out a little while ago. Just hadn't been hitting Putts this year. It has filled me with excitement. Putting has been so much better.
Just used this for my 1st 2 rounds of the year yesterday (40mph winds) amd again today (about 20mph) and holy crap. I play off 2 and barring a couple of rusty errant drives today which resulted in lost balls, i just shot -5 with 9 birdies and an eagle! 23 putts too. Had to make a minor adjustment to it so my leading hands pinky had to be inside the trailing hand and wow! Best ive putted ever!
Worth a try 🎉 makes sense ✨
I am playing today and I will be giving this a try. I have played for 25+ yrs and always struggled with putting no matter the grip I use. I’ve used left and right hand low for years.
Excellent video Alex. I had heard about this grip, but after seeing your explanation I gave it a go and it worked so well, I beat my playing partner this week as the putts kept rolling in. I need to get used to the pace as the grip is so much lighter than my old grip so I did leave a few shorter than I would normally.
One area that I would appreciate an explanation on via a video is greenside chipping in the current weather conditions. The courses at the club where I am a member have suffered a lot with the recent storms and rain and as such the areas around the green are very soft, soggy, muddy and the grass is longer.
How should we treat these chips compared to summer as it is to tempting to try and 'nip' the ball off the surface and not get caught in the mud/long grass, but this often means a bladed shot?
Morning Alex
The 2 thumbs down together grip was banded about many years ago when thicker grips became popular but never really took off. I don’t see it working with anything other than a much thicker grip but anything is worth a try if struggling putting.
Keep the vids coming mate!
Alex, I actually saw this somewhere else and I tried it, love it and been using it! For me it works great. I feel I have total control of the putter and my shots are more solid.
I’ve tried this grip and I can guarantee you it works, it gave me instant confidence on the stroke. The problem is I kept forgetting how to interlock the fingers properly, so THANKS ALEX !!
Hello Alex Thank you very much for your great support and commitment. I have a PISTOL PUTTER GRIP (Toulon Las Vegas Putter). What type of grip do you recommend for the Pistol Grip? Best regards Harry (Switzerland)
Alex I have been putting really well lately but I may try this anyway.
Certainly going to give it “ago” and see if it improves my putting. Thanks for sharing.👍👍👍🇺🇸
Thank you, I like this grip or a slight variation better then the claw I was using. It has more feel and I don't blow my high MOI putter way past the hole. Allows for a straight back and forth stroke. Suggestion: when I watch my conga drum strokes on CZcams the Op always shows the playing from the top so you don't have to reverse things in your mind. Imagine trying to get the fingerings on 3 drums via instructional video in reverse! That would definitely help with this grip. I had to flip the phone upside down, and when you pause the video, it's hard to see.
Thanks!
Will give this a go . Anything that improves and drops the putts is worth a go.😊
I am going too im new to golf and have been experimenting with different grips stuck with the prayer grip and liked it but i still am struggling with a grip to choose and this looks like a hybrid of the prayer i like with more stability
Im gonna try it thursday on the course!
I tried this about a month ago and have been using it ever sense. Best way to take my hands out of the equation. I have been putting the best and most consistently than ever before. It just works for me.
I am really going to try this grip!! ⛳ 🏌️♂️
You should!
I’m going to give it a try. My miss is a pull and I play right hand down and I find myself getting slightly open sometimes. Hopefully this will straighten my stance and avoid that pull.
I tried it and I am in love with it. The benefits you mention are issues lee Trevino deal with . Thanks
I see where it's going, and I'll keep it in mind next time I get out.
Hey Alex.
So i like the grip just have trouble placing my trigger fingers . Where do you feel is the best position for these fingers? I don’t want them to persuade my stroke. And what kind of grip do you think works best.
I use a double overlap right hand low for putting to try and achieve the same. I will give this ago
Imma try it
Will try this new putting grip. Could I ask if you could do a session on consistent strike. With the ground being so wet recently I have been catching it thin and then in a endeavour to strike it better have hit the next one fat! The ground conditions are not good at present. Enjoying your advice. Tried to book a lesson there was a slot free on 21st Nov at 2pm but that doesn’t seem to be available anymore has it been taken?
If I remember I will try it
I'll try it tomorrow! Should be fun. Best of luck. Beach, NC
I tried it but hurt my fingers, I have a large grip! Only 1, 3 put today. I'll keep trying g it! Ohh 19 hdc , but shot 86 using my old grip. Thanks, Beach, NC
I’ve always formed a diamond with my arms and elbow. It was the only method that got my Scotty Cameron Beryllium faced putter to roll the ball.
Will definitely be incorporating this grip Friday...
wow big words here
Would a standard "Tour" size grip work better for this? Or something a little larger like midsize?
Might as well give it a shot. I'm always very close to holing my putts, maybe this is what I need to leave those 3 putts behind
Looks solid Alex, will definitely experiment with this. A little tip for you - keep those golf trousers out of the tumble drier 😂
Thank you for a very interesting putter grip idea.
I have 3 putters.
I will give this grip a try with my American, very large head L2 putter with a 4 cms . wide grip.
The putter face is 13 cms. wide.
This grip will NOT work using my tapered, narrow , TOUR SNSR , Golf Pride grips.
❤I will have ago at that cheers Patrick
How does this grip differ from a Prayer grip? or is it just considered a variation? I just switched to a variation of this from the Claw Grip. In the variation I was shown, my left hand has the three bottom fingers followed by the to middle fingers of my right hand, and points are sort of out. I just shot one of my best rounds in regards to putting ever.
This might feel more secure, with an oversize grip. I have small hands, but the putter feels loose, in my hands and is liable to twist, without putting too much pressure on the grip/handle.
Looks like the grip recommended on the instructional videos to be used on the original 2thumb grips 20 or do years ago, or is it a slight tweak?
2:33 My guy doing the Single Ladies dance in the middle of a golf tutorial. He can do it all!
Ill try this in a couple of hours. My weakness is 3 to 5 footers, dont get as many as i should
Could be the key for me. Well try it . I have a good feeling about it already
When you said weird, you said it all !😂Make yourself a good day
Started using it last round and was draining putts!
Some people teach this the opposite with the hands.one grip has more rh on the grip one has more lh on the grip. Either way seems pretty good
Great video but prefer the left hand lower. This one feels like I have to hold the putter way to tight and need to put the index fingers on the side of the grip to make it feel “secure”.
One thing that I can say is please put on some longer socks 😉
I tried it last weekend. Made everything within 5 feet. I'm sold.
Where can I get them shorts mate
Where do the index fingers go on shaft as it feels to lose?
Great idea but the size of my grip doesn't allow complete wrapping of the hands, I'd have to change grips, which I'm not interested in at the moment.
What on eafth were you wearing?
Is no socks in November optional?
The funny thing is, Alex, that I seem to putt better with one hand. Should I just practice that way and use that method on the greens? I'll try this grip for sure!
I definitely miss fewer 3 footers if I just walk up and stroke it with one hand!
I'll try anything
Might be mental but I like this grip, although I reversed the grip to make left hand dominant
interesting 😮
Alex I've locked my fingers and now I'm stuck, have a RSI and am considering suing lol far tooooooo trendy for me rather stick with 99.9 % of tour pros, however those long putters up to your chin, seem popular on the tour, what you think.
The claw has the even hands as well sans the palms facing.
🤠 Feels great / results will see? Does the size and style of the actual grip create a better fit to the hands?
I tried that. Totally uncomfortable. Found a better feel by left hand low but interlacing "ALL" my fingers. Have not tried it on the golf course. I just may go back to the normal putting grip with just feels normal for me. And I don't putt that bad anyway.
What putter grip shape is best for this type of hold?
Looks like a grip you would definitely need an oversized putter grip. I’ve tried them in the past and do not like the feel. I use a midsize 88cc grip from Golfpride. I don’t think it is wide enough to accept this grip.
Kawashallow is onto something
New grip instruction starts at 2:48
Alex when you’re explaining your tip please don’t forget there are left hand players
Left handers?
i have a new Ping putter... and feel that the grip is too small for this hand position... (New DS72c mallet)
My grip is too thick for this technique but I’ll be changing it soon
does it really matter which hand interlocks? it seems it could be either way.
The way you show it is a little different than what I’ve seen posted. You put the right 3rd and 4th digits on top of the left vs I’ve seen it where they put the right two fingers behind the left hand
I’m sure Dave Stockton would get a good laugh out of this grip 😂 !
people only try these grips out of desperation. It goes standard grip - reverse grip - claw grip - arm lock - (belly putters before illegal) - whatever fad is out now. Much easier just to invest some time in practice. But each to his own.
Did you find the type of putter (toe hang, neutral, etc.) matters with this grip?
The version golf digest published with Steve Johnston is different than this. Alex’s version makes more sense.
No idea how you're doing this tried it while watching your video and every time there's a lot of play between my hands and the grip. It just wiggles around. That' with my cadet m/l hands and a Superstroke 2.0 grip too.
Just put a '2Thumb' grip on your putter. I'm sure it will be more comfortable than 'knitting' your fingers together.
Just an average player, but have recently gone to a LAB putter and it does that part for you.
