All of the galleries in Chicago used to be clustered in River North until the condo developers came in and drove up the rents. There was even a subdivision known as SuHu, in a nod to NYC, that encompassed galleries along Superior and Huron Street. Now they've all splintered and moved further west to the West Loop, Fulton Market, or even south to Hyde Park. Richard Gray and Rhona Hoffman were both in River North at one time. In addition to The Art Institute, I love going to the Cultural Center, which used to be the main Chicago Library. This building, sandwiched between Washington and Randolph, is the epitome of Beaux Art architecture, complete with a Tiffany dome in the rotunda. The center has a robust art schedule with numerous stimulating exhibits, which are all free to Chicago taxpayers. As for The Art Institute, I know the permanent collection like the back of my hand, and no tour would be complete without a mention of the homegrown artist Kerry James Marshall, whose own retrospective was hosted back in 2016 by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
Such great context, thanks so much for sharing all of that!
Lovely, just lovely.I thoroughly enjoyed visiting each gallery and re-visiting the Art Institute ( I’m Chicago born and grew up visiting the AI but each new visit is a revelation as was this one). Thanks also for sharing your delightfully calm and pleasant guidance and introductions to this diverse and multicultural group of Chicago galleries.
Excellent choices !!! Perfect weather timing too, sunshine this time of year makes all the difference. Thank you.
Yes it does! We really lucked out with the weather
Appreciate your content...I love Chicago
Thank you for visiting our Chicago art galleries, museum & Expo. I learned a lot since I don't get into the city often enough. 😊 You look great, Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
Always a pleasure. Great tunes too.
Thanks for sharing! I love and miss Chicago!!!
I very much enjoyed this, under a crisp blue Dublin sky. A perfect evening! Once again, real cool. Thank you Mary Lynn!
Great to see some works from a variety of previous generations as well as more modern works - thanks
Love the finale of this video wrapping it up with so many of the Titans of modern art.
Really enjoyed this video of Chicago beautiful artwork thank you
Thank you Mary always turn to you to get my art fix for the month.
The vivid video and captivating narration, as if I had been to Chicago myself, are touching.😊🎉
Really enjoyed your trip to Chicago! Thanks so much for all of your great videos ♥
As always a generous video gift❤❤❤ thank you🎉😊
Luv the Classics! 🎖
Your narratage’s so nice 👍
At 25:32 That Francis Bacon painting, "Figure With Meat" 1954, is truly one of the greatest paintings of the 20th century. Try as contemporary painters do, there was something about the zeitgeist of painting from 1948 through the 1980s that can't be touched.
It is incredible
Great video, thanks I enjoyed 😉
love this channel you do! excited to see it !!
Thanks so much
Very informative ! Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
❤❤❤❤❤🎉
Thanks for another great video. I especially liked the Hilma's ghost show. Thank you again for showing the works individually and up close. Also loved the Art Institute visit. And your outfit looks great. As always I look forward to your videos, keep up the good work.
Glad you like them!
For those of you visiting Chicago and interested in more institutional shows, also check out, north to south... Block Museum, Graham Foundation, MCA, Gallery 400, Hyde Park Art Center, Smart Museum, Logan Center, DuSable Museum, and Stony Island Arts Bank among the other structures at Rebuild Foundation.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Always look forward to your videos. They such a wonderful respite from the craziness of the world. Please tell where your jacket came from it’s lovely.
It's from Zara a few years ago!
❤❤❤
So nice to see you with beautiful brown hair..can you grow out your bangs..just think about it..
Michael
You're really chowing down on this one. Maybe you should do an in-depth food vid sometime? Loved the Van Gogh's! What Cezanne said about Monet, "He's nothing but an eye. But, my god, what an eye"
Like the Richard Wetzel paintings!
I really liked your wonderful survey of Chicago galleries. Such high quality work! One wonders how the galleries are able to stay in business? Rent in the area hasn't gotten any cheaper and it's tough to sell original art in the Midwest. The owners are doing God's work just by keeping their doors open.
My fav gallery in Chicago would be LVL3
thanks...
Well done for not laughing when you said “Psychic Healer and Professional witch”. Im so done with amateur witches 😄
Monet at the end 🥰
I was struck by the updated compositional similarity between the Monet at the end of the video and the Joan Mitchell at 23:30; so much so that after viewing the Monet, I had to backtrack the video to see if my eyes were deceiving me (lol).
Your mic makes your voice sound so soothing and amazing, mind sharing which one you use?
Thank you! I use the RØDE PodMic, and I'm very happy with it
😎👌✌👍❤❤❤❤❤
i mean, the art institute looks breathtaking. are you not interested in Francis Bacon, seemed to skip by, at least on camera anyway? that small van Gogh, wow.
8 galleries in one day that's a marathon. we appreciate the opportunities to see so much varied art and all the writing that pulls together your responses and the information. thanks Mary, thanks Chicago!
Oh no, the Bacon work is spectacular!
love the video - dont you think n hilmas ghost....its very like Hilma af Klint work
I remember when I was in the Chicago airport waiting for the plane to Sweden. I was eating like a pig, big meal, big desert, cockies and cakes, but it was the good old days 2003. Nice video thank u for showing. Stockholm Will be so nice, its the town where I have been many times.
Any suggestions of things to do /see in Stockholm?
@@MaryLynn_Buchanan you can see Liljevalchs and djurgården, Waldemars udde. But art is pretty much dead in the whole of Sweden. I have seen a gallery in Södermalm
My HOMETOWN!!! I hope you went to galleries on the Southside (ie Black galleries) and not just downtown galleries/museums... Just sayin...
The comment above was added 10 seconds into the video.
Mary Lynn Chicago is NOT a car city!!! We are a public transportation and walkable city just like NYC. There are a few millien people in Chi who don't drive or have never owned or don't own cars. FYI...
Good to know!
Why dont you have Artspace8 located 900 n michicgan downtown??
Did I just see you eating a donut with a knife and fork?
guilty 😂
thanks. It seems your looking younger these days.
Love art, hate people. So hated this.
