The full-back has reportedly said yes to a move to West Ham, but there is still plenty of work to be done between the two clubs before a deal is done. It will likely be a swap deal, with Flynn Downes going the other way.
Downes impressed on loan at the Saints last year, making 33 Championship appearances. Manager Russell Martin is desperate to secure the signing of the 25-year-old permanently, and he seems to be happy to sacrifice an important player in Walker-Peters to do so.
Both players are valued at around £15-20m, so it could mean a deal that is completed quickly. Lopetegui and Steidten are keen to get their business done early, and with pre-season starting soon, they will want to get the deal done for the 27-year-old as soon as possible.

Rather swap him with Ings and keep Downes.
Yup keep Downes and just loan him again. If he ends up being loaned for 2-3 seasons in total, then that is practically the duration of a normal contract (but we get the finished article at the end).
I don’t think there’s anything in that deal for Southampton…

We need better than Downes but I'm not sure Walker-Pissflaps is what we need at RB.

Earthy, Orford and Potts can easily cover for Downes
Perhaps Downes being moved on would give Orford a reason to sign a new deal if we say he will be Flynn's replacement this season. Is Orford good enough for being 4th choice CM? At some point, I'd like us to be brave enough to take a chance on our academy players.
I think Potts is ahead of him in the pecking order for now and Orford hasn’t been offered a new deal yet, hence the confusion on the players part.
@@HammersChatwatched a couple of potts games last season, hes good player. Strong on the ball and can pass. Hopefully he and earthy get a chance this season
I don't think they are competing. There are many different types of CM now and most teams play 3 across the middle. The midfielders are young enough to be trained in different roles. We also need to have depth to rotate and to mix things up for different game types.
To coin a few there are midfielders that specalise in holding, ball-playing/play-switching, box to box, traditional ball-winner, false 9, advanced playmaker/trequartista, and souczechia. Soucek is his own thing... so I invented a midfielder category .
As Tony Gale once said during commentary, we are not use to players with double barrelled surnames ie JWP,and now KWP immanent, but double barrelled shotguns yes lol

I think both the Czech lads had a good Euros myself, all things considered. I hope Lopetegui can pull some more out of them for West Ham; or at least give them a fair crack at adapting to his methods.
Frankie's idea of a loan season at Soton again, to see how Dowes handles life in the Premiership, isn't a bad one.
I'd like to know what Tim & Lopetegui have discussed about him. Balancing business against talent, stats against £s can't be easy.
I do think we need KWP, even if it does shift a shortage elsewher. Although, with Alvarez, Kudus, JWP & Creswell plus Guilherme, Earthy and Scarles, Lopetegui might be able to muddle through.
All depends on who adapts to the playing system the best, and is actually fit to play.
Overall, I'm in favour of KWP coming in, would prefer not to loose Downes, but finances and practicalities will win the day.
Loan makes zero sense, if it turns out he can't hack it at the Prem level we'll be stuck with him!

Any optimism going into the season will die quickly if Soucek is still starting in the midfield. Surely Lopetegui would have interest to see if Downes could fill the role better. (Assuming no other midfielder is bought)

Coufal has had it easy for years. Ben Johnson has never really put pressure on Vlad. Agree with Frank, would be good to see both players push each other to start

Coufal will leave this summer. Anyone reasonable that offer first team football and a wage increase and he'll be off. Thankfully Steidten has been looking at young RB's to develop and bring in a the back up option some that could push KWP for a starting spot.
Downes is an okay player but the money will likely be closer to 10m plus KWP and Ings will be sold separately to them as well. We have good targets for the back up DM role that wont cost a huge amount of money and all would be an upgrade on him. Thanks for your time with us Downes but good luck down South.
Wan Bisaka is ranked 19 on that list,also the list I saw is from 90 Mins
If you look at all the best championship player's they all go for around the 20 million mark , and Downes was one of them last season

Decent right backs at reasonable prices can’t be that difficult to find in the transfer market.
Home grown, better than Ben Johnson and will suit the wingback role that lopetegui likes to play. Downes is easily replaceable so to get a player plus cash deal makes total sense
With the window open until the end of August, what if Man U came in for Alverez and we have sold Downes?

I just watched CZcams highlights of Walker peters & I was impressed with his running with the ball skills, he has more about him than Coufal & Downes. Downes doesn’t dribble like that.
Walker Peter would fit in quite well with how Lopetegui likes his full backs to play and getting him in would add some cash to the transfer budget that may help to get some of our 1st choice targets over the line.
Shame if Downes does move on. Never really got a fair crack of the whip under Moyes and when he did play he was often out of position.
Personally, I like KWP. Might get confusing with JWP though and any other acronyms we want to add like BTW and FWIW

Ok, this proposal sorts the RB out but leaves a big hole in CM - Alvarez will miss pre-season, at least, but is bound to get suspended sooner than later leaving a critical position exposed and we already know that Soucek and JWP don't cut it there - got to hope Steidten has achievable targets in DM

I have to agree. If you look past getting skinned ny some of the best players in the world, in games we were getting dominated, he actually had a really good season.

Kwp seems to be pacey and techically proven english PL defender, that we can get on the cheap. Leaves us with funds for the striker, which is an absolute must. Might regret letting downes go though. Not suited to moyes, but may be suited to Lopetegui. Lastly, pray that we can offload soucek (cant pass), ings (cant run) and cornet (injury prone) now.
Reluctant to lose Downes but I feel the player plus cash would be a good deal for us actually. Álvarez hopefully isn't out long so if we get our CBs and ST then I'm optimistic
Remember, Vlad has just 1 year left on his contract too, so it’s future planning for that position.
I think it’s a good deal for both parties. A fullback we need and one that suits the style of football Loppy tends to use, as he likes pacy fullbacks. And Downes isn’t quite good enough to be a regular starter for us, so makes sense for him to play football somewhere else.
I’m not entirely convinced Downes is anything more than another Josh Cullen. Give it a year and he could well be back in the Championship if the Saints go down and he’ll be all forgotten about.
Still, he played some good games in the earlier Europa Conference games for us. I wish him well. ⚒️
Not to sure about this one KWP had a great season but is unproven in prem still feel Flynn Downes is perfect loppis style of play and has great passing ability and could shine if loppi gives him a chance.
I think he is proven in the Premier League tbf.
In a relegated team , I'm not saying he is a bad player and I wouldn't mind him coming to us just think loppi will want what Downes brings to the table as well.

Thats good money. if we get 5mill+KWP as a Johnson/home-grown replacement and a back up to the ageing vlad, then it makes sense to me.
I like the idea of loaning Downes for another season as part of the deal. It would give us a season to see how well he does at Premier league level. A loan fee would probably be 4-5m. I would think Downes is worth 20m to Southampton and Walker-Peters is worth about 12m with one year left on his contract. I think 8m plus Downes on a season long loan would be a good deal for us.

Is KWP better than Coufal? Only seen him when we play the saints but he didn't look great? and the fact we're also sacrificing Downes who could do a job for us under Lopetegui? Saints want him desperately wouldn't it be better to get max money and bring in a pearl who could replace Coufal down the line? I'm scratching my nut at our business so far doesn't seem any better than it was under Moyes with the exception of Guilherme? The West Ham dithering was detriment before Moyes. Moyes just exacerbated it.

And when a new manager/coach comes in to a club surely they wanna put the current players through their paces before deciding to move them on? I know a lot of our players looked bad for a few seasons but I still think that has a lot to do with Moyes and his tactics/style?

Nothing official but I believe he’s told Downes he’s a squad player so room for him here but not guaranteed starter, which I think is probably fair and accurate for now anyway.
Why west ham does not want Flynn Downes? He loves the club and anyone does I would rather keep them and he is really useful, I’d rather if we get both players

Downes is a OK footballer, not great, not bad, he's OK. I don't care that he's a WHU fan! All I want are some new good quality players, preferably younger ones that we can help develop. I trust Steidten and Lopetegui to make the right decisions on Downes, Walker Peters or anyone else out there that they think will improve the team.

I guarantee that under Lopetegui it won't be much different than under moyes. Reasons why is Soucek. Lopetegui is in the middle of rock and a hard place. Can't drop him or sell him but he doesn't fit into Lopetegui style of play. 😢
I like Downes & would rather keep him. I think FD’s career is moving forward whereas KWP’s career has gone a bit stagnant
Forget the money, just put Downes in the team for the first four games and in my opinion, you will see how much he has improved and be less keen to move him on. Too many judge him on what he did under Moyes.

Not sure what the fuss is about. I wasnt impressed by FD in the PL with WH, despite his limited time. I always felt he was a champ/bottom 6 player. Getting KWP to push Vlad as a replacement for BJ + 5 mill, and a home grown is a gift! What people are forgetting is we're not skint; we're hamstrung by FFP. We have to get creative in the trans market, in order to have the ability to replace Aguerd, Zouma, Antonio/Ings. 100% we should bite Southampton's arm off up to armpit :)
The swap deal could be very beneficial to both clubs if done in separate transactions, for PSR purposes.

JWP has far more market value than KWP, in my opinion anyway

I would love for downs to get a real chance. Butt One of the reasons we have such a big rebuild to do, is because we have been too sentimental towards certain players. Which has manifested itself in holding on to them for too long or on the other hand turn down good fees for them. Doing this deal is what tim was brought in to do, head over hearts.
Agree with every word, the loan has worked wonders as we now have a club that’s promoted and desperate for Downes, who has a value of £20m (imo anyway), for a player that we ‘didn’t want’ last season.
Absolutely and to trade him in for a player that's in my opinion improve the first 11 straight away plus a bit of cash isn't absolutely no brainer. Especially where I think it would be quite easy to sign a replacement defensive midfielder for around 10-15 mil, there is quite a lot of them around.
And we’re not looking for a ‘first choice’ midfielder either, I feel that can be more of a ‘Steidten gamble’ player in there

But the facts we have had at minimum serious interest in García ( was sold for 15 million€), and ismaël koné ( was sold for 12 million€), makes me think that they have been looking at this deal for a while, And starting considering options in the 10 to 15 million range.

We got what we paid for Kehrer and it’s not just a reflection of a players ability, you have to take everything into consideration and he wasn’t playing and on decent wages. That’s like saying any striker over £50m is too expensive as Haaland was only £50m.

I like the KWP link. To me he has always been a solid right back. But, I also like Downes. I think with the right coach, he might become a really good premier league player. Obviously that’s a glass half full comment. I don’t really understand the negativity towards Downes, to be honest! He’s never had a bad game for us, admittedly he hasn’t set the world on fire either. But he was not played correctly to be fair.
