On this episode I decided to take Little by Little out for an evening ride. No talking, no music, just straight pipes, a whistling turbo and a little bit of Jake. You’ll notice it’s all float shifting as I was taught by my cousin Rod, who I think is one of the best out there, to only use the clutch for starting out and backing up. All you need is smooth application of the gas pedal to match RPM and the shifter falls right into place. I spent a lot of time in my younger days driving 13’s and 18 air shifts which by my account are much easier to float, especially the 18, but not nearly as much fun as shuffling a set of sticks like this 6 and 4.
The sticks are the main reason I found and bought this truck. When I put a local wanted ad on Kijiji in the fall of 2017, the previous owner saw my post “looking for a 359 w/twinsticks” and decided to call me up in his words, “there just aren’t that many people out there that know about and would actually want them.” This truck was his pride and joy, but due to health reasons he had to shut down his company but just couldn’t come to part with this special old girl. We started chatting and eventually became friends and I convinced him this was the truck for me. He was happy it was going to someone who knows what it is, appreciates it and would restore it back to its former glory.
I’ve always wanted to drive a truck with Spicer boxes and when I used to haul gravel, sand and soil around Edmonton, there was another fellow with a gray W900A that had a 5&4 that I was always fascinated with it and really wanted to try but never got a chance.
Now after over two years of blood, sweat, countless hours and cash, I can finally roll down the windows and let this awesome truck roll on. Still knocking some shifting rust off after 20 years of being out of the driver’s seat, but it’s starting to come back to me and what a feeling to be doing it again! There’s nothing like it … the only thing that could make it better, would be to put a load behind her and hear the old Cat load.
For those not familiar with twin-sticks, essentially, it’s a 6 speed transmission mated to the CAT diesel engine standard H formation except for the odd shifting pattern for 5th … a dog leg down to the right with 6th overdrive up against the dash. Then the 2nd stick is a 4-speed connected to the 6 with a short driveshaft called the auxillary or Brownie after the company Brown-Lipe that used to make them before Spicer. The Brownie has a horseshoe pattern with 2nd and 3rd on the bottom and 4th up against the dash (again overdrive). You use the auxillary to “split” each of the 6 gears 4 ways and when you’re really cooking you have both sticks up against the dash #goinghomegear. Note it’s not necessary to split every gear on the 6 speed main and you can skip especially when you’re empty bobtailing like I’m doing here.
Hope you enjoy the episode … always welcome any feedback or comments.
Stay tuned to the channel as I’m not finished with this truck yet. She still needs body work, some minor mechanical improvements, paint and a few more shiny things before we’ll call it a wrap. Oh, and before you comment, I realize the steering wheel is clocked … must have put it back on the wrong splines back when I removed the roof … will fix this weekend.
Also, be sure to subscribe for the start of the next #ProjectSnowman, a Kenworth W900A tribute truck to the one used in the 1977 classic movie Smokey and the Bandit with Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed and Jackie Gleason. If you haven’t seen it yet there’s no excuse as it’s on Netflix “For the money, for the glory, and for the fun … mostly for the money”

Man this brings back some amazing childhood memories for me. I’m 27, my dad was an owner op for many years. His last 359 was a 1987 359 long hood, 3406b, 13 speed, 5” straights with 355 rears. I have very distinct memories of falling asleep in the bunk late at night at 5-11 years old on a cool spring night with the sleeper vents open listening to that engine. No better sleep have I ever had in my life. Unfortunately he sold it in 2005 and we’ve been trying to track it down but no luck. It was a GORGEOUS blue with red stripes.

Congrats on a job well done!!! You are the real deal! You braved weather, mud, rain. Having restored many vehicles and big trucks in my time, I do know that feeling you get when you can finally go out wearing clean street clothes for that first drive knowing that all your hard work and ups and downs was for this. It really is better than sex. It last longer and won't take you court. Lol!
I bet your cheeks was hurting when you came back home from your drive having a huge smile during your ride.. Lol! Don't forget to put some cans over the stacks from rain getting in while she's parked outside.
You do deserve this. Living the dream!
    Now for the next project!
Thank you for saving this old truck from a slow death in the weeds. There are lots that say that they are going to....... And never do and it never ends well for the truck as it sits in tall weeds forgotten rusting away to dust.
You are a rare breed that can appreciate and has a deep true love for trucks.

I went as far one time, to rent a tractor for a day just to go for that drive. People I tell that to laugh, but I guess until you have done it for a living, they really don't understand it. That's fine by me, less people to have to share that feeling with.. She's looking good Sir. Stay Safe & Cheers!

The first stick is main gears 1-6 second is mix of low and high 1-4 so each gear has basically 2 lows and 2 high ranges it’s like a 24 gear transmission but a lot of the gear ranges overlap

RT 87 I’m a truck driver here in Australia, and would rather my 10 speed, driving twin sticks 12 hours a day 7 days a week is not my idea of fun.....don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful truck...
