You know Gary, when I studied with Pat Martino (1982-1984) he once said to me that the reason artists often have a difficult time dealing with people (the main stream in general) is that artists operate at an accelerated speed of consciousness. It's like the masses move in slow motion. This somehow resonated with me then as it does now. --Thank you for this interview.
I'll never forget the first and only time I ever saw Gary play, it was with Jimmy Johnson on bass, and the inimitable Allan Holdsworth. This was b.b. King's bar and grill New York City New York July 25th 2000. I remember they already had done a few songs, and they were halfway into their set, when Gary took a brief but poignant drum solo as a sort of interlude in the song, and then there was a pause of silence only for a few moments, and that's when out of nowhere, Gary pulled up this tiny little bell from what must have been down near the middle of his legs somewhere, and out of nowhere in the middle of this amazing drum solo, he rang this tiny little bell, and looked at Allan with this crazy smirk on his face, needless to say, Allan just stared at him with this perplexed look, like where in God's name did that come from?
And absolutely hysterical moment to say the least, when those three guys got together and played on stage, it was something otherworldly to behold, they had a visceral surreal and palpable telepathic communication between all three of them

Gary is a wonderful musician and such a *Human* Being! And it was so affirming what he said about John too. That ethos of not playing the typical cliches you know is what I would strive for always.
Gary was the drummer on my favourite album ever which was Gary Moore’s ‘ Dark Days In Paradise’ . What an honour to play with Gary Moore.

Gary Husband is a lovely man, and a beast of a musician. Thanks for this sensitive and salient insight Gary, I hope you're well. Edit -when I listen to Gary and Alan play, it's a very symbiotic relationship going on - almost feeding off each other. Goodness know what the outtakes were like : ). I've never heard such chemistry as with Alan and Gary, it must be hard for Gary in so many considerations really. I'm just so happy they made such music. Peace to all.

Saw you with level 42 some years ago. Fantastic.
I have enormous respect,and love for Gary having played with one of my lifelong idols Jack Bruce.I became an avid fan of Level 42 in the 80s and was not surprised Mark counts as one of his great inspiration Jack as well,so its fascinating how some of these musical paths criss cross resulting in incredible music.The Level42 album Garuanteed which featured remarkable contributions from Gary and the brilliant Allan Holdsworth is CD that every serious music lover should seek out.Applause and praises for all thruout
Gary is an immensely gifted musician and what a joy to hear him talk about playing with four iconic guitarists. I did also like
the fact that he spoke about playing with Robin Trower, another superb guitarist. I was also delighted he mentioned Mark Wingfield - who
most will not have heard of. Mark is predominantly a jazz guitarist, so more in the style of McLaughlin or Holdsworth. Give the album
Tor and Vale a listen it has some superb guitar sounds and a great listen late at night with a single malt in hand.
Great interview Gary I grew up with Holdsworth Jeff Beck McLaughlin and you didn’t mention another one of my favorites one of the greatest bass players in the world mark king level 42 with You!
Gary Moore is usually the choice for the expert guitar player's favorite guitarist. Like Vinnie is for drummers. His version of "red house" at the fender show was jaw-dropping.
Amazing musician & comes across as such a decent guy. Struggling with the loss of some great friends and collaborators.

Recall seeing you in your very early days with Allan when you gigged with Turning Point at the Arnolfini in Bristol, my friend still has your broken drumstick that flew into the crowd because you were hitting so hard, great times (although I know Allan was frustrated with the UK scene at that point).

Amazes me i never even heard Page, or Clapton or Beck even mention Allan Holdsworth.
The man who redefined how to play guitar. Had they done so or been more enthusiastic it might have helped boost his solo career. But it took eddie van halen to do that

I love Gary Moore's playing... but, and this is my opinion, so please don't hate... he's the odd man out in that company..........but so are 99% of most players
Gary Moore had more melodic sense than any other, plus his playing was ferocious.
I love Johnny Mac and disagree totally with Husband's explanation. McLaughlin plays the same lines over and over.
No... you're thinking of Santana... & even though that MAY be the case today it does not diminish where he DID ascend to!

I could say one other thing, though, like what has already been said, it is not necessary.
I am having a hard time thinking of a guitarist who does NOT play the same lines over and over. John's are, over the years, extremely varied, and are just some of the coolest...
Won't John run out of notes? Sounds like an interesting approach. I wish knew enough about the guitar to play any notes together that don't sound clunky. :(
That is true ! But it don't matter - everyone draws from their lexicon, everything is recycled - they are all at it, in their own ways, possibly with the exception of Derek Bailey
