If this happens, you can still apply the front brakes (that's 60-70% of braking power) with the pedal and stop the car. However, there is no vacuum chamber / servo /power brake, so you will need to press the pedal with a much higher force than normally - eventually by using both your feet. Great video to prove that! We had this shit happen many times, at random moments (good that it was either no or slow speed) the brake was gone (actually it worked but only the front wheels breake and with very little braking power). We replaced the pump for 1800€ and this stuff still keeps happening and noone knows why. Now imagine driving 200km/h, you see cars at the end of a jam, you press the pedal and suddenly there is no brake.
That DING gives me nightmares.

Dear Amazing Road! To disconnect ANY components of the overall control system while the battery is connected, even with engine on, is not advisable, to say the least. The downside of an innocent "let's see what happens" is potentially costly when it takes at least Star diag to make things work again. Although you clarified that the brakes will halt the car ok in SOME situations. Some had scary moments on the highway. I know you are a resourceful guy and you probably have the star diag somewhere up your sleeve, but just for safety's sake, please dont disconnect a multi pronged plug with power on and the ECU active. The pins don't disconnect simultaneously and the potential to damage to the electronics is HUGE. Lucky you were able to skippidydooda back home with everything still working. Thanks!!

I had mine fail on the highway while I was doing over 100kph, luckily it was Sunday morning and there weren't any cars on the road otherwise I would have rear-ended someone for sure. Car went into 2nd gear and the speed dropped to 80kph, which I could not go above. Braking was greatly diminished and the pedal had to be pressed right down to the floor. My car was 11 years old at the time. Mercedes replaced the pump for free saying that they had increased the warranty to 15 years, this was in Toronto, Canada.

I saw on one video Mercedes changed the recall for the SBC pump replacement from 10 years to 25 years since it's a common failure. They would replace it for free.

hi mine just failed on 2/07/2018 w211 e320. i had pefect brakes then a clutch i went right through a red light! good thing it was 5 am and only going 40mph if i was doing 80mph on freeway could never stop the car in time i can swear on that maybe after 5 pumps had maybe 2-5% braking power! but it definitely would not skid or did anything like your car! i drove back at 5 mph i was only 1 mile from home. anyway fixed now $2000.00, mercedes where i bought the car would not do goodwill repair. i think you unhooking electronings, is little different but my was sbc pump failure the defect.

I had mine fail and yes it stopped, but this wasn't anything like as easy as you make it sound. I was lucky enough to stop without incident but if a kid had stepped out in front of me I wouldn't have been able to stop.
I was however very fortunate in that MB agreed to pay for the new SBC unit and installation, even though my car was 11 years old and hadn't been to their dealership for a service in over 7 years

Mercedes have recalls on all E models from 2002 to 2008 regarding this issue. Go to Mercedes and ask for SBC electronic breaks system recall.
The facelift versions starting with 2006, don't have SBC anymore.
It appears you had the e-brake on the entire time you were "testing" brake failure. This is not at all indicative of what would happen if the system fails AT SPEED. You didn't at all show how to bring the car to a stop from 80km/h with a failed SBC system. This is a joke.

FYI...MBUSA Has extended the factory warranty for 25 YEARS on the SBC system and its components. I called the local dealer, got a same day appointment and had my 2003 E320 back the next morning...NO CHARGE!!!

You can get it into gear without going under the hood like in the video. Right as you turn the key, move the shifter into drive. You may have to shake it a few times but I have repeated this to get home and to the shop...driving slowly.

Hello. Thanks anyway. This one did not work. Total fail for me. The SBC was changed then the car stopped for 3 years. When I started again everything was fine, brakes included. 3 days ago it started to display this message and the car was blocked. I tried this one but it did nothing at all.
I had a 2001 ml 430 with the abs pump disconnected for a while and I didn’t have any problems braking also

This should be fixed by Mercedes for free. It's part of the 25 year hydraulic brake warranty. You go to dealership, they run a diagnosis and you pay $200 for that. Then if the error falls into the Brake system Hydraulics, then they fix it and you pay nothing. Save yourself $1200.

Caution: If you have one of these cars, do not try what this guy does!!! His simulation is NOT how it actually happens. When SBC fails, the ability to stop the car is severely diminished and you won't be on a deserted road. Be prepared to downshift and use the emergency / parking brake. The forums are full of warnings.

In Mercedes W220 there is no system SBC. SBC stands for Sensotronic Brake Control. That is, there is no connection between the brake pedal and the wheels. And abs is a conventional braking system

This dosn't work all the time. When it dosn't upshift, the ECU thinks that its a transmission failure and even when the SBC is back on, wont shift properly. You'll get late shifts etc

Hi,i drive a E211 ,sometimes when i turn on ignition i get same problem,red brakes light nd sound but if i turn off nd on again 2 or 3times its good to drive again,,, the ppl at benz dealership says its some eletrical fault but my mechanic says get a new sbc but im unable to find one with similar codes as the one installed in my E211,,, but very recently i noticed even while i waa driving at low speed my sbc would shut down nd car loose speed,but no warning signs on screen or ref light,but again after i switch engine off nd than on,its good to go,,,,any sensible advise pls,,,anyone 😞

You disconected The ABS Block and Abs Pump Not the SBC Pump!!!
The Main Problem with sbc systems ist the failure of the Pump.
You have to disconect the sbc Pump Plug and Brake a few Times.
After the pressure ist Out the Car wont be able to brake becouse there is No pressure left.
You have to use the footbrake.

I had this message before(service break and visit workshop) i know the problem was from the SBC then i saw ur video and i was thinking if i will have the SBC warning in the red warning i will do like what u did in this video then i will stop my vehicle,,
After i saw this video i had a red light warning when i drive to my home, really i CONOT STOP MY CAR, CONOT STOP MY CAR. I used the emergency break to stop my car and i went to my dealer then they changed the SBC pumb for me,
