Lyrics:
Of all the money, e'er I had,
I spent it in good company,
And all the harm I have ever done,
'Alas it was to none but me.
And all I've done for want of wit,
To memory now I can't recall,
So fill to me the parting glass,
Goodnight and joy be with you all.
So fill to me the parting glass,
And drink a health whate'er befalls,
Then gently rise and softly call,
Goodnight and joy be to you all.
Of all the comrades that e'er I had,
They're sorry for my going away,
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had,
They'd wish me one more day to stay.
But since it fell into my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I'll gently rise and softly call,
Goodnight and joy be to you all.
Fill to me the parting glass,
And drink a health whate'er befalls,
Then gently rise and softly call,
Goodnight and joy be to you all.
Fill to me the parting glass,
And drink a health whate'er befalls,
Then gently rise and softly call,
Goodnight and joy be to you all.

My Best Video: "How Great Thou Art - Peter Hollens feat. The All-American Boys Chorus"
• Video
~-~~-~~~-~~-~ - Hudba
I played this for my Dad (also named Peter) when you released it, and as a choir-singer he adored it, instantly saying he'd like that played at his funeral. He passed away on Monday after a long battle, and as requested, we played this at the church. I always felt this song spoke of the honour my Dad so casually wielded. It has always been, and will always be, my favourite of your offerings. Thank you, Peter.
May your travels be short and may you always have the wind in your back, my friend. Your father sounded like a fantastic person. May he rest in peace.
I’m not crying... there’s just something stuck in my throat
I've always wanted this song played at my funeral, now this is my favorite version.
Peace, and Joy, again to you. May your Dad Fly High and Free!
I bet he's up there singing a beautiful song.
My mom died last saturday and this is a beautiful song. I am sorry for your dad.
"In a world without gold, we might've been heroes!"
-Ed "Blackbeard" Thatch
I'm not crying. You're crying.
-I'm just after a bit of coin my friend.
sorry but theres sand in my eye
He drinks damnation.
I'm definitely not crying.
But so true
The song expresses how I want to be remembered. It is unspeakably beautiful.
I just found out that a friend of mine from years back died today. I had to come back to this as a weird kind of goodbye to her. She was such fun and awesome person, and at 38, she died far too young. So, Devon, this parting glass is for you.
I am so sorry for your loss. They will be remembered. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Abby Kaddaby Thank you. That she will be.
+Mathew Gruman
I'm sorry for your loss.
Though your tears may be salty, the beer you drink in my honor should be less salty
i raise my glass for her lad she will be missed
Thank you, both.
Honored to share my newest creation with you. "The Parting Glass" from AC4 (my favorite folk song) LINK: The Parting Glass - Peter Hollens - Assassin's Creed 4
Awesome as usual !
And AC4 is my favorite episode, so thanks ^^.
Beautiful.. gave me goosebumps, Peter ;)
Is this song from the credits?
Absolutely amazing!
I was the one that originally asked you to do this song. Thanks! Beautiful, and far better than what I expected!...=) Congratulations on the new member of your family...=)

The harmony and range gives me goosebumps every time
+Waifu Rider~ Yes, it sounds like a carol, or psalm. So soul-relaxing! I think this version is the happiest version of this song.
i check the first time i was geting them
second attemp again
3rd again
4th again
XD
+Waifu Rider~ I KNOW RIGHT.
*flashbacks* The ending of black flag where everyone is there in the table drinking ale and enjoying the moment. Made me shed a tear.
Celine c this I am from the future. That scene never gets any easier
Can confirm. Still hits like a fully upgraded jackdaw.
I haven't played AC4 in years and that song still holds a dear spot in my heart, I guess also helps I'm irish too lol. Still miss our pirate friends though. Riposare in pace.
4 years too late, but it did make me emotional

if anyone wants to sing
Thanks for this.
LegoM007 glad to help :-)
I'm 61 and of Irish descent. When I was age 6 the family dog died and an Auntie sang this song as my father buried him. Since then when my dogs die I drink a few drams and play the Clancy Brothers version. Teddy, Dinkum, Sherlock, Bobby, Cullen, Finn, Gadget, Gizmo, Bonnie loved you all and will meet again. Clyde and Jessie alive and kicking.
After having read the comments and having listened to this rendition a good amount I'd say that some people are missing Peter Hollen's person completely.
A rendition is NOT suppose to mimic the original, it's suppose to be a personal spin.
"Knowing" Peter Hollens from his videos, I'd say that he'd take a parting such as this, a sombre sorrow, deep as rivers, with the same spirit he delivers this song: With teaming emotion, a quiet power and with celebration to the life lost, or chapters closed.
Minus the traumatic sorrow suffered by Kvothe, I imagine Peter Hollens being a lot like him when he becomes Kote, the tavern owner.
A small part of me hopes that Peter sees this to confirm or debunk this, alas I know it's been a long time since the debate died out.
I raise my glass, to all of you.
The harmonies in this make my eyes tear up. It's beautiful.
I know! I have a good ear for detecting tones and chords, but these are odd in that I can't tell which notes make up the chord. I can tell that it is a harmony, but I can't tell what's in it. The chords are that perfectly tight, and it's that way with all of Peter's songs!
Peter you had about 40 thousand subscribers when I subbed too you. You now have 670 thousand. Im so happy for you
aww love to YOU!
You deserve every single one of them!
+Liara T'Soni 1 million 1 hundred twenty two eight hundred eighty one subs :)
One of the most beautiful versions of this song ever. Magnificent
I know because it's one of my favorite Celtic songs. (High Kings anybody?)
High Kings YES, their version is gorgeous!
+Mary Potash The Wailin' Jennys, too!
+Lance Johnson YES!
+Lance Johnson Yessssssssssss.
+Lance Johnson Celtic Women here:)
Awesome father. May you little ones days be long and many, and may they be filled with joy and song. Blessed always be the child.
Goosebumps and goosebumps and goosebumps omg. Amazing.
Brings tears to my eyes everytime.
My son played his guitar and sang a version of this beautiful song for his grandma at her memorial service. She died 2 years ago today, and this came across my FB newsfeed just now. Here's to you momma. Miss and love you!
This man has supernatural talent
work is the key i think^^
Sam Dupont, ***** is awesome, isn't he?!
Sam Dupont Exactly! It takes incredible talent to self multiply 6 times.
Heh..Its 'supernatural'!~ xD
Amazing as always. So smooth. I hadn't heard this song before but now really like it :)
WOAH
Hey Chad just want to say miss the original content not the hackers the reviews. we all miss it.
This song is actually an old Irish folksong from the 1600s. It's been adapted for multiple modern day media shows/video games, the most notable ones being the Walking Dead and Assassin's Creed. However, this is NOT a new song.
Just a little bit of backround.
It always makes me so upset when people think it's from something new :(
+Banzai Mongoose agreed
Doubly agreed.
+Dawn Wolff they mention Alas ? I'm not familiar with expresions ( in foreign languages ( im romanian ) ) but are they refering to the god or what ?
this song always makes me cry (in a good way) it reminds me of my dad who passed away in march, and its a beautiful song. thank you peter hollens
Wow, amazing that you have the ability to sing all of the different parts, wonderful range!
29 seconds in... absolutely love it already.
I am an actor at Medieval and Pirate Festivals and this is the last song we sing at the Pub before ushering patrons out for the day. Further, we sang this at a friends wake we held at show a few years back. Deep feelings come with this song and you have done it justice on many levels,....
Does anyone else just start harmonizing to his songs cause I all the time.
That baby must have only the FINEST of lullabies sing to him! I'm so jelly! XD
+GLTE Shadowblade True! The baby will have some legendary sleeps in its life! and it's so cute! I just wanna hug it for a bit!!!!
Reminds me of my friend that died in Afghanistan, good job Peter, made me tear up a little, which I find hard to happen
DocHoliday 53 sorry for your loss brother. To the ones we couldn’t bring home
This is actually a classic Irish folk song
And a damned good one.
you can say that again
Us Irish sure know how to make music.
+Collin Shay i think American Country Music is based on Gaelic Music.
+Gabriel Jacob Eberle Aye, it is.
Played this today at my father's funeral along with a playlist of other rocking tunes. Thanks Peter.
Oh god this reminded me of how fricking incredible the ending of AC:IV was and now I'm getting all the feels D:
I know right?!!
In a world without gold we would of been heroes
What a beautiful song and performance! And the baby looks so sweet ***** Congratulations!
Тhx sweety this morning ....
awwww Thanks Terri Nakamura You are always TOO sweet to me ;)
Love this ***** and echoing Terri...congrats on the new baby xoxo
Yay! \p/
I meant \o/ mmhmm, as in a cheer!
LOVE SEEING LOTS OF YOU SINGING THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE SONG. THIS IS USUALLY THE LAST SONG I PLAY AT NIGHT.
I just lost one of my dear relatives. I listen to this plenty, but I listen to it a lot when I lose someone. Thank you for making this. It brings more comfort to me than I could ever express.
it gets awkward for me when it comes to songs like this because most of my early life was spent at and is still spent at renaissance fairs, and whenever my friends that don't go to the fair find these songs from a game that i haven't played yet know the music of. They automatically assume I've played the game in question and i suddenly end up on the lonely side of a one-sided conversation
I am the same way. :) I've been listening to songs like this most of my life.
Growing up with the High Kings version, I can say I honestly love this one :3
I cry every time I hear this gorgeous arrangement - Peter sent me the signed first and last page of this arrangement, which arrived in time for my 21st! SUCH a lush piece, with a lush voice to boot.
Listening this song performed by Peter Hollens makes me feel delighted with his harmonic voice work. It's so beautiful.
I've known this song for years, and I've loved it since the first time. When I heard this in Assassin's Creed 4, I got misty-eyed, especially with the visual scene going with the song.
I bet he sings wonderful lullabies to that little baby...
listen to his song ashlands song and you know instead of betting...
Have you ever listened to something that was just too beautiful to be true? Well, this is something like that. It's one of the most beautiful songs on earth mixed with the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Thank you so much!
We sang this toast for our Grumpa, an old soul of Irish stock. Thank you for making this.
Someone needs to loop this song infinitely. If anyone can somehow do that, that would be AWESOME!
This is the BEST Aceppella version of this song, the only thing wrong is it's too short!
Even after all these years it sounds fresh and exciting.
You have a beautiful voice Peter, ballads suit you so well as does the folk genre, of
which your covers I have listened to many times over.
your parting glass version just brought me to tears.. amazing. simply amazing
Sang this arrangement junior year in Madrigals. I come back every now and then when I feel nostalgic for the simpler times. I miss that group.
Got me again. You have a way of bringing the tears. The last time I heard this was at an Irish bar. We were there for a memorial. The sound of 60 drunken warriors singing it for a fallen friend is something I'll treasure. Thanks for the beautiful rendition. :o)
This has to be the absolute best video you have done so far. The harmonies are perfect and the blending is excellent.
Thanks David Davis I appreciate it my man!
You are welcome. I always emjot the old standards from Ireland. I really only listen to you and the Clancy Brothers. I just wish I had pursued sinfing like tou have.
David Davis Never to late to start
Orthan Risin any ideas on how?
I love how this version has a positive vibe, there are several version which are rather sad but this one always makes me happy! Amazing job Peter!
You know...I didn't think I would enjoy this song without strings.....but if there was anyone to prove me wrong, it would be you, Peter. A beautiful job as always.
You know, I love this song and I've heard a million different versions, but this is the first where it's not all sad - it's even happy.
And I adore it!
Coming out of the loss of a very dear family member, this song (especially this version) really strongly reminds me of her, and how she wouldn't want us to be sad. I'd like to thank you, Peter, for making this (even though it's over two years old). It seems I found it just when I needed it. :)
Singing or talking, he has such a soothing voice.
OMG - how did I go my whole life without these videos!!! SOOOO inspiring on so many levels. Thank you, Peter, for showing us how it's done!
Person: "Hey do you want to get like 5 other guys to sing this with you?"
Peter Hollens: "HAHAHAHAHAHA no. I got this"
-how i hope the conversation went when someone recommended this
maledetto Hollens..........
Bravino eh? :)
A song older than mine and my great great grandparents generation. A song sang in many a pub up and down our wee country. This makes me think of my old school friend who tragically died in a hiking accident just last week aged only 25. It's a song that perfectly reflected his kind hearted and witty nature. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam, Eoin.
Very nicely done Peter. You'd do well in a trad band here. Keep doing what you're doing.
the High Kings version still brings me to my knees. those harmonies.
That baby's going to hear some AWESOME lullabies!
Yes Chelsea, it's just me. :-)
Sing way of the monk from world of Warcraft
***** Any way I could get the arrangement?
I'm so glad you made a cover of this amazing song,
love it
Hey, Peter. I'd be more than honored to sing with you someday. I don't really have anything for you to listen to, but I admire what you do so much.
You're amazing and your kid is just adorable. have a wonderful day.
Fantastic song and you executed it so well :)
P.S. you have a cute kid :)
I raise a glass to you, sir.. you bring true emotion to the tune and a tear to mine eye (which I'm sure was your intention)
I wasn't aware of this tune in a video game, I first heard it in the movie "Waking Ned Devine"
Talent rules over technology, and so you have proved you're an artist first, and it was just you... that deserves a raising of the glass, gentle joy to you., and may it last !
That child will inspire you, as you will inspire him, please don't cut his hair til absolutely necessary ;)
I just re watched this for about the hundredth time because I love it so much and I just realized I've been a Peter Hollens fan for six years! That little baby is now 4 years old and I've never been happier to call myself a member of the Hollens Family. Thank you Peter for all of your wonderful performances. I've truly enjoyed them.
One of my favorite songs. Love the old Irish/English folk songs. Peters version gave me chills, in a GOOD way.
you guys all look and sound so similar!!!
LOL

Congrats on Baby!!! God bless you and your family

My Favourite Peter Hollens song! This is stunning
This wasn't his song..just saying

Beautiful voice and harmony . love your music. God Bless You
I first heard this song as a irish composition. totally love this song!!!
I have loved the other songs but this is my favorite.
woah, that is quite the compliment thank you Pat Floersch
Hai
Ok so I'm drunk right now, and I'm Irish by descent, and this is an excellent performance of the song.
my Irish heritage goes back to the potato famine and when the Irish and Germans first immigrated to America. so im like 25% percent irish
Folk songs are my favorite genre. thanks.
Belle performance. Magnifique.
congratulations you gave this song a rhythmic sense which makes it less flat. and congratulations for bass !
Great job with the song! Just a suggestion, I would REALLY LOVE to hear you do a medley from the Phantom of the Opera! That would be AMAZING!
Well now he has!
Oh my goodness! His baby is so cute! I bet it has the best voice ever when it grows up!
love you Peter.
This is possibly your best. Two thumbs up. So cool to listen to.
assassins creed 4 why you give me so many feels -cries at end video-
I've been listening to this for about 3 hours now. So sad that it took me this long to find it! It's truly food for the soul. Definitely one of my favorites you've done, Peter. Thanks for such beautiful music!
Favorite version of this song. Ever.
the feels :,( so beatifully done
Edit: I actually shed a tear
Very nice song Peter. God bless you, your family and specialy your little beauty :D
So touching Peter Hollens.....so great
We always sang this at the closing gate of the ren faire I worked at once upon a time. Always gets me a bit teary.
This video is 8 years old, and I keep coming back, and I CANNOT listen to it just once.
Great register and high notes Peter, love it! Congrats!
Ever since my music teacher (a kindred spirit) moved away last May, this song has been constantly running through my head (brings me to tears every time I hear your version of this song; then again, when doesn't it ;) ); so soulful, melancholy, and despairing, but yet hopeful at the same time.
Peter thanks for your songs. They are amazing. I love them.
I know it from The Walking Dead, Beth sang it over a camp fire one episode. It really resonated with me, and the tune stuck with me for a long long time until i heard it one night during a run in the rain on an Ed Sheeran album. I stopped and listened to the entire song. I swear it changed me somehow haha XD
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You, sir, have just explained how I discovered this song. The song in Ed Sheeran's album is "Give me love" by the way, and the episode of the TWD series is the first of the third season.
Margaret Decker ^.^ XD and Alex G Yeah i know! due to a symptom called the iPod syndrome (skipping songs before they're done) i never really got through the song and heard it. I never skip songs while running tho and thats when i "rediscovered" this gem :) absolutely beautiful.
Mubarak, Walking is a decent arrangement. Check out High Kings and Celtic Woman.
Spoilers:
Oh god why did beth have to die!
Might i suggest you do Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame???
+Chozin Yi Actually, I'd be fine with him doing just about any of the songs from that movie (except for "Guy Like You"). My preference would be the intro song, but Hellfire would also be awesome. Or just a medley.
+Sean Murphy that prayer song from ND would be great.... God Help the Outcasts
"Out there" Is an amazing song as well!! I love the Hunchback movie!!!
Oh yes, please! Do Hellfire or the intro please!
QueenChrissiThe1st he did do a cover of it in his Disney villains medley over the summer
amazing acapello.... my fav so far of this song, which is both sad and fond and yet, hopeful and joyful.
Gonna have this song sung at my funeral and a lyric on my headstone. I'm a pirate to the core and the ocean is in my spirit. I'll forever yearn to the horizon.
I'd love it if you did a medley of the sailing songs in AC4. A lot of them are really catchy and I think they'd match your voice well.
Such good songs RIGHT!?
You should do "Auld Lang Syne"
Logan Mainord Love that song
Are you a fellow Irishman?
Auld Lang Syne is Scottish.
So was The Parting Glass...until the Irish turned it into a drinking song.
The Parting Glass actually predates Auld Lang Syne. Robbie Burns had a better PR program
Watching again & still loving it in 2021 ❤
This song hits home for me... Thursday we buried one of my shipmates ( active duty US navy) who passed away and this was the song that played as his family was escorted away .... im sorry I wasent there brother ....
Whenever i hear this song it makes me want to lead a good life and not get caught up on things. Also i want this song played at my funeral and everyone to have a glass full of beer or wine when its played
lets drink to that one lad ;-)
