  • Join clinical herbalist, field botanist, and nutrition educator, Shana Lipner Grover, as she brings us to Mount Pisgah Arboretum to discuss horsetail (Equisetum arvense). Horsetail likes to grow near water and can be used in teas, vinegars, and tonics. Having one of the highest silica contents among plants, Shana's favorite way to use horsetail is infused in the bath for soft skin.
    đŸ€“ Shana is a clinical herbalist, health and nutrition educator, and field botanist. She was a student of award-winning herbalist Michael Moore and also one of Mountain Rose Herbs' favorite herbalists, Howie Brounstein. Today, she is the director and primary educator of Sage Country Herbs School of Botanical Studies in San Diego, CA.

      Yes, horsetail concentrates gold in it's tissues. Not enough to collect but it was a good indicator for gold prospectors in the past.

    I have heard that marsh horsetail is toxic. Can you advise how to differentiate between marsh horsetail and safer versions?

      Hi there! Horsetail contains thiaminase, which breaks down the necessary thiamin (vitamin B1) levels in the human body and can lead to thiamin deficiency. We have another video about horsetail with herbalist jim mcdonald where he touches on this topic and how to overcome it! You can find the video here: czcams.com/video/97vCW6qI0UE/video.html. I hope that helps! - Gracie

      Hi there Eartha! There are other lovely uses of horestail such as infusing it into herbal vinegars and tonics. For plants like this, I would suggest sites like learningherbs.com/herbmentor/ (which does require a small subscription fee) who have full monographs of plants and their uses! I hope that helps! We will definitely keep in mind making a more in depth horestail video in the future! - Gracie

    With all the different horsetails, is this particular one good for medicinal benefits, Equisetum hyemale?

    • @mountainroseherbs
      @mountainroseherbs  Pƙed 3 měsĂci

      Hi there! This video is on Equisetum arvense, commonly referred to as field horsetail. Equisetum hyemale, known as scouring rush, has similar medicinal benefits to that of its field horsetail counterpart. We hope this helps! ~Indi
