The great skating coach, Frank Carroll, long believed that his ladies skater, Linda Fratianne, who was a favorite for the gold, lost only because the "fix" was in for Cousins with some "score trading" going on between some of the men's judges and the ladies judges.
Yes Frank said that basically since 1980 (RIP Frank, love you). It is possible that there was vote trading with Jan/Robin with the intention to trade in the ladies, but what ultimately happened to Linda was just happenstance. Linda was in the exact position the previous year at worlds but won the long and in turn won worlds. She did not win the long in Lake Placid, so really Frank's claim that Linda lost because of vote trading isn't valid. Denise justly winning the long did Linda in, not vote trading.
@@fluttershy912 Even so, just as a standalone competition apart from the ladies, I still think Jan should have won the men's event. Cousins was a great skater with big jumps, lots of air-time, and flow across the ice, but he wasn't his best in the LP. I believe he missed his triple flip. He was also 4th in figures. Jan won figures and had no mistakes in the SP or LP. I still believe Jan should have won regardless of the ladies' situation.
