Five quick hits of fun and general weirdness for the Disney XD channel and their core male 6-11 demo from The Brothers McLeod, Joel Trussell, Tristan Eaton, Buff Monster and Ryan Quincy. The Brothers McLeod: "The client had seen our short film '365' and wanted something with the same feel and pace. With such short sections, a second for each shot, we had to make sure there was a sequence that would work both from an audio and visual perspective.
"One of the most fun aspects of this project was being given access to the Disney sound libraries. We were like kids in a candy store going through all the sounds that we'd grown up listening to, then using them in our own work - amazing fun!" Schedule: four weeks.
"Nowadays it seems that everyone works digitally, but I like to keep things as analog as I can. It's faster for me to paint something by hand, and I also like the feel: it feels and looks more in line with the history of animation. So I painted up five key frames and sent them to Disney. They scanned 'em and the animators made 'em come to life. "Everyone I worked with on this project was great. Vincent and John at Disney were so committed to keeping my vision intact all the way along, and to make the piece as absolutely awesome as it could be."
Joel Trussell: "The biggest challenge was to decide what to do, so I submitted several ideas utilizing several techniques. This piece was the one that seemed to reflect the new attitude of Disney XD best. "Instead of using an entire production studio, I ended up just tackling this with two of my friends. I like working with people that have strong skills in multiple areas, so we can get our hands dirty on all the aspects of making a short." Schedule: "Roughly two months."
Tristan Eaton: "Amazingly, the brief was wide open. The only direction was to use the Disney XD green colors somehow.
"I wanted to tell an action-packed, epic story about a battle between a volcano and a skyscraper. It's a mini-story about old versus new and man versus nature. I originally wanted the Skyscraper to win so it would be a more ominous tale, but the Skyscraper made such a good villain, he had to go down so nature could win in the end! "Honestly, writing a story that's 15 seconds long is harder than it sounds! I wanted to do something fun and action packed but still tell a fun story.
"The animation team was super helpful in pulling this off. I spent a lot of time in the storyboarding phase mapping out the fight scene and pacing the project correctly. "I was only asked to deliver a handful of digital files to represent the key frames of the cartoon. However, I wanted to guide the visuals a little more than that, so I ended up illustrating more frames than necessary just to give them a lot to work with.
"Knowing when to stop is the hard part! Handing off static images to be animated is tough sometimes because you're not sure how the motion will be interpreted. I tried to give them as much information as possible. They worked wonders with what I sent to them. "I was very lucky to be chosen for the project. The team at Disney was very accommodating to me and gave so much freedom. It was truly a dream project!" Schedule: "The production schedule was very flexible. I happened to be in the middle of a world tour painting murals, so all of the work was created on my laptop while in Mexico, Berlin and Paris. I would paint all day on scaffolding and giant boom lifts, then work on my Disney project at night in my hotel."
