These guys are national treasures! We need to thank them.. Honor them... Celebrate them. Great American songwriters, NOT punk rockers! They're more folk, country, blue grass, and rock... This is an amazing song!
Ah but see that's the point, punk encompass ALL of those and that's the brilliance of what they do. And yes they are THE king and queen of punk rock.
punks never die----lol
They wouldn't be there singing if it weren't for punk rock
They are great songwriters. X never got the credit they deserve. This song is absolutely brilliant.
Punk music its folk...thanx exene cervenka and Joe Doe.u made my days punx!
This band's music has been part of my life for 30 years and they always will be. John Doe and Exene are national treasures. I can't believe how many people don't know who they are. I can't even put into words how much I love this band. If they come to your town, just fucking GO SEE THEM. You won't regret it.
Sure, I liked them fine 35 years ago, but it's only this morning that I can appreciate just how spot-on every line of your comment is. NPR was playing "4th of July" during a fill this morning, and it inspired me to start searching and eventually bought me here. And as far as the truth of their unexplained obscurity, I did see them once in the late 80's. They played in a parking lot at the weekly Fremont Market (in Seattle) where it seemed only a smattering of folks stopped to listen. I was one, of course, but I definitely did not fully appreciate then what I was witness to.
X is just such a great American band. Great singing, great playing, great songs. No one else sounds like them.
John Doe is so criminally underrated. I'm happy I got to meet X in all places, Denny's, the morning after an X, blasters, and Los Lobos show in San Diego. John wasn't there, though. Got to meet him at a book signing in Solana Beach a couple of years later. Always at an X show when they're playing here in SD or Orange county. They are the absolute best.
I sometimes find it hard to believe the countless times I've seen X in over 40 years. This song is always been a favorite.
The more you listen the better it gets .
I wil never forget all the times I went to see you play! The most unforgettable is the night I told my parents I was going to see Rocky Horror (So I could stay out late)...only to jump in my car and drive to LA from Carlsbad to see you. !!!!! You Rock! Doesn't matter how old we get, you will always ROCK!
Tresa Protzman I used the same excuse!!!

John Doe is up there with America's greatest rock artists, and Exene is such a unique voice. Might be my favourite band...
My Lord how great is this?!!!!
X is so GREAT ! When John & Exine harmonize, it's MAGIC!
Their Harmonizing Is AMAZING!
I Love X 2!
Yes!!!!
Johns voice has never changed. Still great.
It has changed a bit, for the better. ♥️
Yep, I grew up with this band and at this point we have to say that we are at least middle-aged, if not OLD. Thankyou, photograpers, for capturing all of the age spots and wrinkles on faces. good job! It's real.
When John at 2:26 sings "draw your bath and comb your hair" I cry everytime. 😢😭😭
This is probably the only CZcams video of a band I really love, that the comments were all very respectful and cool. This makes me really happy, because I really love this band, and all of the respective members. :) Thank you!
How powerful is this performance?! Sooooo good!
John's voice just gets better with age. Funny to hear them talk about the separation and how people are on the opposite end of the political spectrum. Never more true than today and never more true than John vs, Exene
Relevant as hell in 2016. Thank you X. John is still one of my favorite American singers.
Still relevant.
Love love love X
Massive respect for John Doe and Exene Cervenka (spelling ?) sentiments and songs of this kind are greatly needed.
Holy crap, this is an amazing version.
So great these folks are still with us and can still play these wonderful songs. X, an American institution.
My favorite X song.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame now.
That would be an insult
Lets just keep em ours, ok
Watching because you just saw X on Sunday. Hair is gray that’s ok so is mine. I’ve seen this band probably 60 times. First time you n 83. Still as good now as they were then.
John Doe is so talented. He reminds me of Levon Helm in that he can sing/act, do anything and be great at it with so much presence. dang
These lyrics were right on in 1987, still relevant in 2011, and today the song and the interview resonate more than ever. Things are not lookin' up.
2023😢
They still got it :)
Should be 8 million views .
X have really grown into their lyrics. Just amazing.
Relevant today ... timeless art.
Love X. Always have. John has one one of the best baritones in rock.
I love x
Thanks Shawn Burke for turning me onto this song many years ago. I never get tired of listening to it.
The closeup camera angles are stupendous.
John Doe is great!!
Absolutely Beautiful.
thank God for this
I'll always love them and their music.
Beautiful - thanks.
That was simply amazing. Beautiful.
Just Beautiful!
Great , takes me back !! Thanks marco !!
Greatest fkn song ever written...... Period
Beautiful.
Beautiful
I love these people.
Thank you.. so much.
X never dies....
Gracias.
Love!
brilliant
really nice ..
Nov. 2019 , still telling the truth .
sad and beautiful
Still a favorite
XOXO!!!
they still have that odd harmony...the wrinkles are deep, but the feeling is still there.
Underrated
WOW
It's not "X" w/o Billy Zoom and DJ.
But I did love this, John Doe is incredibly under-rated! In a just world, George Strait woulda been the drummer in real country.
I reply with respect... X always had a folkish quality. It is missed in the modern music.
Really like this song, always have. Also like "Come Back to Me" from Under the Big Black Sun.
The rat poison part makes a poignant point with me.."Rat Poison...Or Warfarin... 5mg a day...These drugs drive everyone crazy. (War fare in my heart. I guess.)
Probably an aside, but all drugs are meant to distract or destroy.... and the destruction isn't necessarily necessary for proper healing.
So relevant still...
Why aren't they in the rock n roll hall of fame?
Because they have quality rather than quantity.
Scott Houston: They don't need the recognition of the mainstream music establishment -- their fans, and fans of genuinely good and authentic music, have them in their own personal R&R H.o.F., and that's all that matters.
You could say that about the Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedy's because there music was not mainstream it was Punk Rock.
All media industry awards are a sham. The Grammys are a fucking joke. The Oscars are bullshit. The Country Music Awards neglect anyone innovative with authenticity (it's all top 40 pop with a steel guitar track and sometimes bad rapping).
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is utterly irrelevant.
top
its NOT really possible to pick a fav but UNCLOGGED is in FULL MY top ! Xoxo michelle Gerber Bell OxoxOOXX
Gerber Bell Live at the Whisky.
X doesn't perform this song live, along with "4th of July", the other classic from that album, supposedly because Billy Zoom won't play songs he didn't originally appear on. Not sure why John and Exene don't just pick a spot in the show to do those two songs, acoustically, like here. That way, Billy doesn't have to play on a non-Zoom song, BUT the fans still get to hear a couple songs they love.
X -you are likely the most underated band of all time. You spoke deep life while the naive masses had no clue. I am listening to you and singing, screaming along with what I hope to be a similarly ahead of my time passionate, give a fat shit, kick you in the teeth as I love you gently, enlightened human being. I lift you up and love you beyond measure. Please rock on through your last breaths!
Which camera and lens been used in this video?
Old punks. :)
...the best kind 'cuz they're so rare now -- so many of their colleagues having sloughed-off their mortal coils.
Love.Your music walk whit me.Ever. Where i am ,nowhere place.
Great performance... Even with Exene drunk.
You start a band and we'll see how that goes....
See how we are?
Do you?
They could have been talking yesterday
Friday night at the Natural History Museum!
Someone please make a guitar lesson on this I have to watch people play i cannot even really read tabs good though they help i need to see the chords being played I can tell its not hard but Im too novice to figure it out .Thanks
Goodbye forever .....
compare this to Patty Smith and Fred Sonic Smith singing People Have the Power (czcams.com/video/yEX_f4_5Yio/video.html), 1990.
Both so mature, the guitarists so supportive, the interplay so perfect.
an american treasure no one knows about.
hard to write that big picture
Exene supports Trump. I can't wrap my head around that.
Ted Knecht that’s.... wow. surprising
Ted Knecht really?!
Who cares, my mom likes Cheeto too but I still love her. We can have different opinions and still love each other ❤️.
How in the world can you support Trump? I need an Xplanation.
Easy, leave the plantation and don't be a brainwashed sheeple.
I didn't like her...She is always out of tune. But he does it cool
Then you just do not get X. Think what you want about Exene but with her it works incredibly well. I think she is amazing and not your standard garbage out there today. She has alot of talent and just jives with John Doe.
I didn't like her...She is always out of tune
X is old fart music, get relevant or leave the biz.
The hubris of youth. Maybe someday you’ll actually listen and get it. This is the definition of timeless.
@@rtsrider4579 Timeless, lol... hardly!
Jenn needs some perspective, that's all.
@@TheEscapeEngine no, this song is bad, real bad. This is old fogy california music. I like european music not this trash.
What a stupid thing to say. Most music of today is utterly disposable
