On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8. - Hry

Hey Growling, I was wondering what a dogfight between a p51 and an A6M5 would be like? Could the P51 win against it or would it be one sided?
Love your videos, would you consider a video teaching effectiveness of chaff/flares and tactics of deployment.

Don't know why but I enjoy the F-14 vs F-15 dogfights the most. It's always nice to see how these two highly capable fighters pair against each other. Having the air superiority fighter from the Air Force and the air superiority fighter from the Navy go head to head is always entertaining.
F-14 vs F-15 & F-16 vs SU-27 are my favorite matchups.

thing people have to remember is that moving the wings during a real world fight can upset the plane and gain the opponent an instant kill but DCS makes these tactics possible and fun to watch
true
Actuators kinda like 0G though. Anything more than one either way though isn't goof
Not if you're using the force bro:)
@@toxickilljoy9037 that doesn’t sound right?
Standard CASE I procedure is to have the wings all the way back and extend them in the break, in the break you pull up to ~3.5gs.
The wing actuation must have been at least rated for this much g loading, likely more as auto mode would force wings forward as Mach number decreased which is likely to occur in a dogfight.
There’s a reason Grumman was known as Grumman Ironworks
@@Uselessnoobcow I'm not sure what you mean? Like yes they're definitely gonna handle the G because it's a vital structural part you can't have ripping off in a critical phase of flight, but that doesn't mean they like doing high G pulls and can do so with 0 regard to maintenance or future structural failure. At 0g everything is floaty and the only stress or inertia anything has is from a direct force, which will help to some degree whether or not it's a pneumatic or a mechanical actuation lol its just physics. Hard to actuate against wind and 3.5+g, easier against wind and 1g, easier still at 0. The thing is, would bunting over to sweep your wings be practical? No, it's pretty pointless. But it's a keynote that actuators perform better unloaded, which is what I was trying to get at lol that actual tip is regarding roll rate which is why it may not sound right, but hey dudes. Actuators are actuators lol
That wing removal.. surgical precision!
7:10 My dad flew the F 18, and now does BFM on a daily basis training the Air Force. I asked him what the worst thing you could do in dogfight, and he said "You lose visual, you lose your life." he actually managed to shoot down an f 22 in his A4 Skyhawk by making him lose visual by using some techniques he learned. He also defeated one of the best fighter pilots in the world, by making him lose visual. It's fascinating to hear about XD.
I grew up in in Calverton, NY. You may know that was where one of Grumman’s largest production/test facilities was until the mid 90’s. I use to get buzzed by F-14’s and A-6’s while riding my bike on farm roads. Well, my neighbor was a Grumman engineer, between the picnic and a facility tour, I saw the F-14 D Super Tomcat. I was young and don’t know much about it but I’m under the impression that it came with more of an F/A concept and had some of the A-6’s radar jamming technology. It is a true shame that it never went into full production. The retirement of the F-14 is probably what shut down that plant and hit our area hard economically.
Was just at the cemetery out there. My uncle was working there when the Shah came to buy f14s...cash. I remember watching Hawkeyes land in Hicksville as a kid. Grumman was 100% the biggest employer on the island at one time.
Worked on the F-14 A+ line at plant 6. Good times!
It came down to the DoD being lied to hardcore by McDonnell-Douglas. They had convinced the DoD that the Super Hornet was just an upgraded Hornet rather than an entirely new airframe. It also hurt that Cheney flat-out didn't like that the Super Tomcat was going to still prioritize the Fleet Defense Interceptor role over the Bombcat role.
@@ljessecusterl I don't know if anyone in the actual military thought of the Super Hornet as anything but a new airplane. It's not like you can just take a jet into the embiggener machine and have it stay otherwise the same. Congress, on the other hand...
"he's supposed to be in front of me but he's not. That means he's behind me" lots of shots
"it´s not common to manual sweep the wings fully forward to trick the enemy" says the guy who always does it in his tomcat dogfights against any type of flanker xD
Nice to see Sunde back in action, he's one of the (seemingly) very few guys who can give you a hell of a fight 💪
Great video.
I was a crew chief on the F-15E Strike Eagle and I've seen many jets come back with half their horizontal stab missing and the pilot didn't even know till he got back to EOR. Mostly due to water entrapment, not from any battle damage. Most pilots I talked to said it really doesn't effect its performance.
That’s awesome.
If you can’t tell from my username I’m a pretty big fan of the strike eagle
Should’ve taken it off for weight reduction lol
Your name isn't Gary by any chance, is it? Initials GLP? Serviced the '00' bird?
@@Man0War I flew the -E for 18 of my 32 year career. If you're young, then try to get in this wonderful machine. If you're old, I'm sorry to say, you missed one hell of a ride.
My Dad always said, “F-15 is the Air Forces F-14, and the F-14 is the Navy’s F-15.”
They do look similar in design.
Designed at about the same time for about the same purpose. The same applies for F-16 and the F/A-18 as well. That’s why I’m having so much trouble deciding whether to join the Air Force or the navy.
@@beatboxbuggi6884 the royal australian air force took on the f/a-18f as its stopgap between our old f-111 and the f-35, despite not being able to make use of the carrier capabilities, as the royal australian navy has no carriers! i think some of the raaf guys learn how to do carrier landings on exchange with usn/usmc, but the aussie f/a-18s aren't equipped with launching bars, so takeoff would be difficult
i think the reasons would have been because of the really great multirole capability, interoperability with our american mates, etc, mission focus not really being 2 circle dogfights which the viper excels at
@BeatboxBuggi The F-14 was designed with the Phoenix missile in mind for long-range bomber intercept and the F-15 was designed as an air superiority fighter. While the Tomcat was definitely capable against enemy fighters, that was not it's main intended purpose.
Does not make any sense
Seeing the F14 just pulling away after the flaps go down always amazes me..
The tac view of the engagement where he got "lost in the clouds" would be interesting.
What a dual to end the year with mate. Can't wait to see the full fidality f-15 model go at it
So the f-15 GS was flying isn't fully modeled? As in, most of the switches don't do anything?
Correct. The f-15c does not have a clickable cockpit. The f-15e that is coming out soon will have a clickable cockpit though.
yep, only 2 weeks until then
The E model isn’t as good as the C model in dogfights, though.
It’s heavier and a tiny bit little draggier, due to the CFTs, extra systems and the WSO.
It can be a BVR monster however.
@@tver Yup. more hardpoints leads to more drag. Other than that, its pretty similar.
Solid flying by Sunde! And I appreciate another excellent video, GS.
F-14 vs. F-15 feels like the Ryu vs. Ken of DCS.
Scorpio vs subzero
Those were some of the best dogfights this year, nice! PS: Don't tell him about the split throttle thing ;)
GS you are right about a swing wing stealth plane. There were several trade studies done one even making a swing wing version of the F22 but the interface at the wing root and body was impossible to make stealthy.
"but I think if we can just remove the wing...there we go" I just lost it. 🤣🤣
At 3:39 when he knew he was going to pass through your HUD he rolled to get skinny and not show you planform. Good move.
Sunde actually flew the Mirage or Rafale right?
Awesome to have Sundea back! Hope y’all had a great Christmas.
Ugh! You had to talk about the best plane never built. I drool and dream of the Super Tomcat. This was an awesome video. See you on the next one.
Those are a lot of emojis
2 almighty U.S Fighters, whichever wins i could care less lol, just really fun to watch
Since you brought up the performance of the two jets in a BVR vs. VR fight at the beginning of round two, in the next Tomcat vs. Eagle fight why not take the Tomcat up with the ramjet AIM-152 proposals and fight an Eagle with plain Jane AMRAAM C-5s? See if and how the fight evens up! Pretty sure we’d all watch that with great interest.
3:49 He is trying to out climb me, that's good... but now try to out climb these bullets! GS didn't run out of options, best line yet!
Now I want to see a F14 vs F15 BVR fight
I like how you’re flying the f15 and still gushing about the f14
As well as the SuperTomCat, I would have loved a F-18L, F-16XL, and a F-20.
It is INCREDIBLY unnerving seeing you flying that close to the ground, I was tensed up the whole time! These are awesome to watch, it's cool to see how different planes compare to each other
You can thank Dick Cheney for nixing the Super-Tomcat....
@Dingle have you seen the reports and videos on what the evolution of the F-14 was supposed to be?
Super-Tomcats would've had AESA radar, carbon composite skin instead of metal (which would've reduced weight, increased thrust-to-weight ratio, and reduced radar cross-section), had more powerful engines, and increased Leading-Edge Root Extensions which would've improved high-alpha characteristics.
The Super-Tomcat would've been a bigger improvement over the original Tomcat than the Super Hornet was over the legacy Hornet.
F-15: "I can fly with one wing!"
A-10: "Oh, is that right?"
F-15: I don't fall like a brick tho
😂
Good to see Sunde back I was wondering where he'd gone off to. Looks like he hasn't missed a beat. Hope to see him in more vids, maybe a team up BVR like the old days.
I downloaded DCS yesterday. Downloaded the F-18C. Trying my best in learning the skills but you make look so easy. Enjoy your Videos.
One thing I notice consistently in GS videos is in 1v1 on the merge he’s already rolled for his turn and starts pulling as they cross - conversely it looks like his opponents usually wait to roll and then pull. It’s not a huge difference, but 5:47 is a good example. He’s already making his turn before the F-14 has initiated. Every tiny bit counts in these kind of fights.
That’s exactly correct, the establishment of turning room and lead turning across the bandits tail for those few degrees of advantage can often change the outcome of the fight. Nice to see someone noticing this and not calling it “cheating” instead understanding that in a dogfight you have to fight for every possible advantage you can get.
@@GrowlingSidewinder I like to say that if you're not cheating you're not trying. If you're fighting for your life are you really going to leave something on the table because it's "unfair"?
thats exactly the correct mentality, if you could throw sand in his face as he went by you SHOULD.

Good fight, guys. I've been watching for a while now, but just pressed the subscribe button. Whatever you folks put up, it's always interesting.
6:39 He pulled a sneaky on ya
9:56 From what I understand of the "upgraded Tomcat vs upgraded Hornet" debate that was going on in the 90's, the navy was looking at the two planes and saying "we can either have a perfect plane when it's ready but will cost a fortune to build, operate, and maintain; or one that will be good enough for what we need and we can get in the required numbers." Considering the the state of the USN air arm's financial situation at the time it's little wonder they decided to go with the less risky latter option. (It's a gross oversimplification of what happened, but it paints a decent picture.)
It's my impression that had they gone ahead with the ST-21 in leu of the Super Hornet, they'd be in the same boat the Raptor is today (a magnificent airplane, that has all the financial and logistical issues of a short production run two decades later).
when you forget the f15 has flaps too💀
I'm assuming there's some reason he didn't use them. He seems to know what he's doing
Excellent use of cloud cover on the second round
While we won't get a Super Tomcat, I'd still like to see something in a similar vein as a pure fleet defender. Supercruise with a long loiter time, plus aerial refueling on a nasty carrier-based missile platform with as much stealth as it can manage sounds just about right.
I think the navy is working on their own NGAD, they just haven't been as vocal about it as the air force.
@@pyronuke4768 F/A-XX is the name of their program. It's not exactly the same as the NGAD requirements, as the name might suggest it's more so a successor to the Hornet, and retaining a focus on the attack role.
First time i've seen the turn reversal of a defending aircraft... actually work.
Now that it has been proven that the F-14 can take on many other fighters, like the Eagle and Flanker, you need to take the F-14 to a dogfight against the NGAD. Maybe you could do it multi-crew?
My two favorite planes. You love to see it! The Israeli paint job for their Eagles is so fantastic as well

Eagle vs. Tomcat = Best looking dogfight
Is no common when I want to GS loss. But if he fights against Tomcat this is that day :D
I would like to see, if possible, a dense fog or low cloud cover dog fight. Essentially an IFR deck and a VFR ceiling. Keep up the great content.
Ant on a bed sheet we call that when look down.
Welcome Back Sunde great job in the f14
The precision of that wing shot was something else. Just rolled around and clipped that bird with ease.
GS seeing behind the F14 with the flaps down: I fear no man. But that thing... it scares me
9:45 I've been called out!
It’s funny you mentioned the 1 Wing F-15 thing not even 20 seconds after I was thinking about that old video😂
Brilliant! Gotta love the F-14, what a machine! (Just like GS)
"No aircraft does very well with just one wing" ::Stares in A-10:: brrrrrrrrrrt
would like to see more fights with Sunde. nice to see a challenge
The F-14 is the one dance partner you don't wanna follow down to the floor.
2 out 4 fight he tried to get you down low enough to smell what people a having for lunch. That is where the cat likes to play. Corner speed is unmatched with ex'd wings an flaps down.
In the first fight he got too greedy in my opinion, tried to lure you down to fast, not forcing you to bleed enough energy.
Would be interesting to see how that balance levels out after a few more rounds.
@9:25 you can land an A-10 CII after it has lost 1/3 of all of it's wings. You can try this in DCS too.
your content is so entertaining and you deserve 1 million subs
That’s very kind of you thank you
lol man every time i watch your videos my head is bobbing left and right
A Super Tomcat with something like the AN/APG-77 in the F-22 and 6x AIM-120Ds/2x AIM-9X with an HMCS would be amazing to have seen. I understand why it wasn't done but I'm still not happy about it.
That's the pilot you should be fighting every time LOL (You seem well matched)
At least this time, since you're flying over a city with no regard to the people below (you REALLY don't like pixel people, do you GS? LOL), in Round 4, at least Sunde was courteous enough to the PixelPeople below to actually splash your Turkey into the water instead of on some poor grandma's rooftop. 😏
Good draw set. Very nice to both of you.
The Turkey is what Sunde was flying not GS. Good attention to detail though... I just got baited into making this comment, didn't I?
You should comment on the Phoenix, which was the F-14 air-to-air load and look at the entire reason for the Phoenix with the F-14; especially upgraded Phoenix.
You could try that one-winged -angel- F-15 stuff. Just let some other aircraft shot one of the wings and then you try to control and land the hurt bird.
a few weeks/months ago gs did that in an f-15 vid. got half a wing shot off and still took down the other guy.
"We are on the deck in a 2 circle"
3 inches off the ground
11:25 rip civilian ears lmao
As always another great fight.
Anytime baby!
I think a bvr with these two would look good. I'm curious to see it. 🙏
F-15 has flaps too and also a speed break that might help in a turn like that. Will it work 🤔
As a kid these where my two favorite fighter planes, The Eagle being my favorite with the Tomcat a very close second. Would love to see a video of theses two planes vrs Russia’s top fighter from the 70’s
9:24 - *_"No aircraft does well with just one wing..."_*
Coincidently. There was once a story about an USAF pilot flying what i think was an F-15E during Operation Desert Storm that suffered a mid air collision with a MIG-29 that it was dog fighting with at quite high speed. Not quite sure what happened but they either tried to head-on each other or got too close but either way, one of the F-15's wings got sheered clean off at the root by the MIG...
Naturally, The F-15 went into a spin after losing its wing, but somehow the pilot managed to straighten it out *AND* fly the plane back to base with no problem at all.
Now there are some conflicting reports (Chinese Whispers if you will) saying that the pilot hadn't known that their wing was missing until they had landed. -- I dont know ANYTHING about that but im sure the pilot would have known their aircraft wasnt quite 100% after the close encounter.
I think some nerds at McDonnell Douglas took the plane and did some investigating and their theory was both the pilot and plane survived because the pilot had the plane throttled up at the right speed where the fuselage also acted as a wing to generate lift and so long as the pilot kept the plane at a certain speed. The plane was able to overcome any excess drag and loss of lift to make the flight home.
-------
Ive heard other stories but they were in relation to A-10's or date back to WWII and im not sure if the WWII stories are legit or not but i think the wingless F-15 has been covered by a few channels on YT already.
The dog flight was won by the F-15 before it started. I’m guessing the flying hour cost and low ICR drove the F-14s replacement. Somethings you just can’t simulate, like the two cann birds on the ground to get the one 14 in the air.
U in a F-15 against a Tomcat and its comin on ur ass you gotta afterburn the fk out of there an go vertical! man i think its the only way to survie. Thanks for the content man, the F-15 vids are the best!
Ironically enough: "That's good, but he's gotta out limb these bullets..."
Anybody watching these videos would know the F-15 does well on 1 wing ....especially the one ur flying

Hey growling sidewinder I've been wondering. I've watched your videos for a while and I've been wanting to ask. What was the easiest thing you learned in the tomcat and the hardest. Would love to know.
Nice demonstration of my hypothesis: dog fighting is required because the ordinance only comes out of the front side. Put on something that can fire out 360 around, no more dog fight needed.
My two favorite jets as a kid. 💪
Don't forget that the A-10 was able to fly home with one wing as well!
