I don't think she's forcing anyone. Yet I agree as a teenager. Causing temptation would just be like Eve handing out the apple to Adam. She just intended to get something that she thought was good for her, but didn't think of the problems it will cause. And we know how vulnerable we are. Would it not be just for the best, if we help our brothers and sisters to keep away from sin? :))) God Love you

It's definitely as wonderful side effects of modesty. You are innocent when a man or a woman chooses to sin, and you aren't an accessory.
Eve handed the apple to Adam, but the first person she ignored was God. Adam took the apple, and the first person he blamed was God.
Modesty is an interior disposition of the heart, would it not make sense to be focused on God honor and her dignity first?

    • @rosedream9539
      @rosedream9539 Před 8 lety +32

well if you're looking at it from a Christian perspective, God shows us in the bible that men view sexual nature differently than women, and women view it differently than men. A man could simply be seduced by the sight of a woman's exposed torso at the beach, while women don't see it the same way naturally, we as woman naturally feel lust by ways other than sight, we feel it more from emotions. While men, on the other hand, lust over women by sight, which is why modesty is important as Christian women. It's all the chemistry of the man and women's brains and how they contrast.

I speak as a man, Christian, Minister...I'm also a professional photographer. Lust is not caused by what we see but how we respond to what we see, male or female. It's an issue mostly of the mind. If it is that men automatically lust seeing a woman nude or partially nude then Christian men should never become doctors especially Gynecologists; please don't tell me that doctors are professionals and hence it's okay for them to see women naked since it's their profession, they are still men unless they are not naturally attracted to women. Being a doctor doesn't stop a man's natural attraction to the opposite sex. Sadly many docs do lust at and even sexually seduce patients. Why? because of their mind. So my point is that if seeing a woman in bikini is sinful so is seeing her in underwear in an examination room sinful if it'ts true here it must be true there too. As a photographer yes I've seen and photographed many women in bikini, when I do weddings some brides want to be photographed getting dressed. I have discovered that my attitude around them makes a big difference because I do not stare or make any sexually suggestive comment. In fact I don't lust, I focus and concentrate on my job.
Also bear in mind it us true that many women who are fully clothed gets raped, so the real issue is about the sexualization in our western culture of the body and how each of us choose to think. Interestingly if wearing bikini is wrong especially for Christian women the athletes should also cover up, In fact if it's a sin it's so for Christians and non Christians alike. For Christians allow the Holy Spirit to lead you listen to Him if He has an issue about what you wear He'll let you know.

Thank you for clearing all of this up. My family is Mormon and I have to go to all the events including church every week. When I learned right from wrong they created a bunch of side things like what to wear and how it's bad to wear sleeveless tops. I thought it was ok to judge the people who did that. When I got older I had an event right after church where I had to wear this particular dress that just happened to be sleeveless so I also wore it to church and I could feel all of the glares from everyone it was so uncomfortable. I now believe that it's not what you wear but why you wear it.

    • @truecatholic1
      @truecatholic1 Před 4 lety +1

While one can't sinfully lust without a depraved heart, it is much easier or more likely when looking at an immodestly dressed woman. One can't control one's thoughts, nor can a person fully control his emotions (and certainly not certain movements of their body). One CAN control what one chooses to wear. I know for a fact that during a brief period in my life, I had a time where it seemed like my body's proclivity to lust was diminished. It was when I was working for a city service department during the summer where probably 95 percent of the department was composed of men. (I am a man.)
Certain occupations (such as in medicine) allow a person to be exposed to a greater risk of lusting because there are sufficiently rational justifying reasons.
How many women dressed like Amish get raped? That would be an interesting study.

    • @inchristalone25
      @inchristalone25 Před rokem

It is on the person not to lust, but we can't take the responsibility away from women to not show their private parts disgracefully. It's not the same as going to a doctor to take care of something private. You would hope the doctor acts professionally that's their job. If my husband was a wedding photographer and the bride asked to have pics done of her getting dressed I would tell him I do not feel comfortable with that and it would be perfectly professional to say he wouldn't be able to do that. Not that he couldn't be professional, but that we are married it's not okay for him to put himself in an intimate situation with another woman. I also would never marry a man who sees naked women for his job.

But you aren't God? I mean, I guess your guess is as good as mine. Personally, I don't think God is going to send a woman to Hell for wearing a bikini. Or even love her less for it. If so--wow, we need to quit preaching that God is all-loving. It seems pretty strange that I, a lowly human, could love a person wearing a bikini without lusting after them (I'm gay, btw) and God wouldn't? I don't know. Maybe quit judging people a second and try to find the love God has in store for Their creation? You're chasing people away from the gospel by making them feel unwanted or undeserving.

*The Spiritual aspect is true 1000% and is made perfectly clear all throughout the Bible. It shows in the way we act and treat one another. It's what we carry in our hearts and minds and spirits. This is what God cares about and what we should be striving towards.*
*Physical modesty is a lie. It's nothing but a man made ideology designed to manipulate and control one another due to our lust for power. It's based on ignorance and our lack of understanding of what our bodies truly represent. This has no basis in the Bible or science.*

As a Christian, it perturbs me that the church has so accepted the misuse of the word modesty. Modesty is NOT about women wearing certain articles of clothing. It's about our behavior, our habits and by our, I mean EVERY Christian. Men have just the same amount of opportunity to practice immodesty, and it has little to do with clothing. It's our focus. To be immodest is to focus on ourselves and to draw attention to ourselves.
Do we brag, talk bad about ourselves to fish for complements, speak coarsely, be self-conscious, treat others less than how Christ would, etc? That's immodesty. Sure, dressing to get attention grows from that same poisoned root -- but just think for a second how many of us "modest" girls wear lots of jewelry, spend a half-hour on our makeup, spend money we don't have on nice shoes, or wear a figure-clinging top that's somehow magically a-okay because we're wearing a camisole under it that covers our breasts "just" enough? That's NOT cutting it; we're just as immodest as the bikini-girl with bad motives.
God intends for us to be modest like Christ, which means we have to empty ourselves to look like Him. (Jesus was still modest and loving while He was naked on a cross.) To be modest is that when others look at us and our life, they see our LORD; we should be so unfocused on ourselves and our presentation that they hardly notice us and instead they see HIM.
Modesty has much less to do with clothes than we think.

It is very sad the way the world is walking around so naked and attracting men for the wrong reasons. It is shallow and empty and when the sex is over for them what is left? Did they even ever get to know the real person or did their sexual desire get in the way of truly getting to know the other person. What gets me is that these tools always talk as though THIS applies ONLY TO WOMEN. What about MEN who go shirtless or wear trunks or speedos? Oh, and my understanding about BIBLICAL MODESTY is that it actually has more to do with OVERDRESSING - like wearing "broided hair, gold, pearls and costly array" ( Timothy 2:9 ).

    • @atari_hmb
      @atari_hmb Před 5 lety

Biblically speaking; modest apparel is preached in 1st Timothy 2:9. Modesty in tudor~stuart era english meant not Lewd, bold, forward, or freely exposed.
And Lewd means "Given to the unlawful indulgence of lust; addicted to fornication or adultery; dissolute; lustful; libidinous." It's clear that a bikini replicates that of a bra + underwear in the modern ages. It can be shown to be a bold, and forward choice of a wardrobe even in its social norm environment (at the beach). It also gives indulgence (influences) to lust, more than most.
Therefore by definition of Hebrew, Greek, and English and it's social placement comparing its evolution and purpose. I wouldn't consider it modest. Especially since most wear it to show off their body, or to allure the eyes of men.

Bikinis and underwear are not the same thing. I mean, that's like saying that male underwear and swim trunks are the same thing but it's not.
Underwear is a layer protection between your clothes and your sweat. It's also meant to protect your skin from sturdy material-made clothes.
Bikini is simply just a swimsuit/bathing suit. Bikini, one piece swimsuit and swim trunks are all meant to cover your private areas when you go swimming or tanning.
I personally wear a bikini because it's a lot more comfortable to wear. It's also a lot easier to change into and out of and it's easier to find a matching bikini than finding a matching one piece.

Absolutely. I always wore a one-piece growing up, until I was a teenager and got tall, gangly, and long-waisted, which made it impossible to find one that fit.
People need to understand the difference between Biblical commands and personal convictions about how exactly those commands should be followed. Making blanket statement about how something not addressed in the Bible is wrong or sinful is legalism, and ultimately damaging to the unity of the church and Christ's message.
A woman should be able to wear a bikini without people assuming she's trying to cause men to "stumble" and a women should be able to wear a one-piece without anyone assuming she's silently judging them or looking down on them with a "holier-than-thou" attitude.
Whether anyone believes it or not me and all the women I've ever gone swimsuit shopping with have always had the same basic priorites:
      #1 fit
      #2 fit
      #3 fit

      #5 color and pattern

If a bikini is like a bra and underwear then aren't swim trucks like boxers? Shouldn't men wear a shirt? Your example is flawed. Of course it'd be weird for the girl to come downstairs in her bra and under it'd be weird for her to come downstairs in a bikini or a one piece bc they are not at a beach or a pool. Now if the girl was with her dad and his friends at a pool or beach then it would be completely ok to wear a bikini bc it's the situation for one. You wouldn't wear a bikini to church right? Well you would wear your church clothes to the beach. If women should have to dress more modestly for men. Men for have to be more modest for women. Here's an idea lets not dress for men let's dress for ourself and God. I think if your mind set should change if your mind set it well I wanna wear a bikini to attracted guys then you shouldn't wear the bikini. You should wear a bikini bc you want to and it makes you feel good. I think it's a heart issue on both sides really. Girls should change there reasoning for wearing what they wear and guys need to get lust our of there heart bc Guys can still lust after you in a one piece if lust is in their heart! So instead of says let's coverup so men don't lust we should be saying let's dress for ourself and the situation and men deal with the sin of lust in your heart.

      1. I suppose it is inappropiate as well for a male to go about the beach without a shirt on, but that amount of immodesty does not compare to a woman's immodesty when wearing a bikini. It was wayyyy more sexually tempting for a guy to see a woman's cleavage than for a girl to see a male's abs or plain jelly-belly. God made boobs for pleasure between a husband and a wife, and that is why the male's brain is uncontrollably lustful over a woman's boobs or cleavage. They cannot help it, it's not society telling them that, it's how they're brain functions and they cannot stop that. That's why we should cover ourselves up, because we are called to love one another and NOT to cause another to stumble, Jesus himself even speaks of this. 2. If you are concluding to just wearing whatever for yourself and God, that is a huge problem as well. If you wear whatever you want for yourself, knowing this will cause someone to stumble (in some cases, not even men, women who undergo homosexuality problems or any young girl for that matter) then this is completely selfishness. You are doing what makes you feel good, and causing another to have sinful thoughts without caring. And God does not want selfishness in your heart, nor does he want a young man to stumble or a girl facing problems with former homosexuality etc etc. So in this case, God would not even allow this. I hope you see this, and i really do care for you and your viewpoint on this, especially because it is summer. Thanks and that's all, God bless. xoxo

You may not be wearing a bikini to gain the attention of a guy but a guy does not know your reasons for wearing a bikini. He does not know that you are wearing that bikini for innocent reasons. Unless you are wearing a sign that says "hey I just really like the beach so don't look at my body" anyone has the right to look at you in an immodest way. It's great that you don't wear one for attention but you will still receive it whether you like it or not. All guys are seeing is your outer appearance and not your soul because wearing immodest dress strictly focuses on the outside appearance of your body but by wearing modest clothes you are showing your inner intentions on the outside as well.

As far as the difference between outer and inner appearance, it's literally impossible to _know_ anything about a person's character from how they dress. There are many people who own a variety of clothing, some revealing and some not. You should not make assumptions about a person's "intentions" based on how they dress.

HorseGirlb blank What did Jesus say about lust? "whoeever looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart" Matthew 5:27-28. This is equivalent to breaking the 7th commandment ‘You shall not commit adultery'. If a woman wear revealing dress and the men lust upon her and thereby commit the grave sin adultery , does that mean the woman has nothing to do with it given that any woman expect that to happen inevitably? I think, the woman should also be partly blame for this. Let me explain, You said, you are suffering from clinical obesity. If your mom bring lot of chocolates and candy to home knowing that most of it will end up into her daughter's stomach, is that what a responsible mother should do? In the society, we are not only responsible for one self but also responsible for each other. That is why a responsible christian woman should dress modestly even if that means to sacrifice a little bit of freedom.

Md. Ahsan Habib Not everyone at the beach is christian. For you to judge them as worse human beings for not following the orders and practices of your religion alone is called religious discrimination.
As for how much blame goes to the woman, I guess it depends on the situation. If she's just wearing what she chooses and perhaps doesn't even interact with a man who is looking at her, then she is not responsible for his actions. If she is perhaps flirting, walking together, getting drinks - then maybe they have done something wrong together. If she knows he's breaking a commitment and actively encourages him to do so. That's a lot of "if"s, none of which can be determined by clothing.

Plus the example of wearing a bra and underwear in front of your dad with his friends makes no sense. If you're in the beach, where it's hot and you want to lay in the sand or get in the beach, you aren't going to be fully clothed. Well I don't know how you get into the beach, but I prefer wearing bathing suits, of ANY kind

Actress and entrepreneur Jessica Rey’s recent Q presentation on the evolution of the swimsuit has generated quite an interest in her beautiful line of Hepburn-inspired swimsuits. And I couldn’t be happier to see this smart, savvy businesswoman succeed. (Well, except that I’ve got my eye on the “Holly” design and it’s now sold out … but otherwise, more power to her!)
Rey’s presentation has also generated renewed interest in the hot topic of modesty, so the folks at Q asked me to share some of my thoughts on the matter in order to keep the conversation going.
It’s no secret that women today are bombarded with mixed messages about what it means to be a woman in a woman’s body.
On the one hand, we are all familiar with the dreaded walk down the grocery store checkout aisle, where magazine after magazine boasts airbrushed photos of impossibly thin celebrities and headlines promising to teach us how to “please our men” with sexier bodies, more fashionable clothes, hotter sex moves and better flirtation skills. Ours is indeed a culture that tends to assign value to a woman based on her sex appeal rather than her character, and that’s something we must work to change.
But many of us are also familiar with the other extreme. We know what it feels like to have rulers slapped against our bare legs so our Sunday school teachers can measure the length of our skirts. We know how hard it is to do a cannonball into a swimming pool when you’re wearing a giant “Jesus Saves” T-shirt over your bathing suit. We know what it’s like to be told over and over and over again by red-faced preachers that our legs, our breasts, our curves, our bodies have the bewitching power to “make our brothers stumble.” So it is our responsibility to cover them up, to dress modestly to “please our brothers” by keeping them on the path of righteousness.
I grew up in such a culture, and I remember feeling bad for the tall girls who were sent home from my Christian school because their shorts were millimeters too short. I remember the tear-stained faces of little girls turned away from swimming pools because their bathing suits had two pieces. And I remember trying desperately to cover up the shape of my breasts, which despite all my turtlenecks and layers and crossed arms insisted upon showing up early. When I caught a male classmate’s eye on them, a wave of guilt would rush over me-Oh no, he noticed me! I’ve made him stumble. To this day, I have to deliberately avoid folding my arms in front of my chest because I made such a habit of it in my youth.
What I’ve only just begun to realize is that these two extremes represent different sides of the same coin. While popular culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to get men to look at them, the modesty culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to keep men from looking at them. In both cases, the impetus is placed on the woman to accommodate her clothing or her body to the (varied and culturally relative) expectations of men. In both cases, it becomes the woman’s job to manage the sexual desires of men, and thus it is seen as her fault if a man ignores her on the one hand or objectifies her on the other. Often, these two cultures combine to send out a pulse of confusing messages: “Look cute … but not too cute! Be modest … but not frumpy! Make yourself attractive … but not too attractive!” Women are left feeling ashamed of their bodies as they try desperately to contort around a bunch of vague, ever-changing ideals. It’s exhausting, really, dressing for other people.
But all of this takes the notion of modesty far beyond its biblical context.
In 1 Timothy 2:9-10, the apostle Paul writes “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” The Greek word translated “modesty” here is kosmios. Derived from kosmos (the universe), it signifies orderliness, self-control and appropriateness. It appears only twice in the New Testament, and interestingly, its second usage refers specifically to men (1 Timothy 3:2). In fact, nearly all of the Bible’s instructions regarding modest clothing refer not to sexuality, but rather materialism (Isaiah 3:16-23, 1 Timothy 2:9-12, 1 Peter 3:3). Writers in both the Old Testament and New Testament express grave concern when the people of God flaunt their wealth by buying expensive clothes and jewelry while many of their neighbors suffered in poverty. (Ironically, I’ve heard dozens of sermons about keeping my legs and my cleavage out of sight, but not one about ensuring my jewelry was not acquired through unjust or exploitive trade practices-which would be much more in keeping with biblical teachings on modesty.)
And so biblical modesty isn’t about managing the sexual impulses of other people; it’s about cultivating humility, propriety and deference within ourselves.
With this in mind, there are three extremes those of us who value modesty should take care to avoid:
    1. We turn modesty into objectification when we hold women responsible for the thoughts and actions of men.
It is important here to make a distinction between attraction and lust. Attraction is a natural biological response to beauty; lust obsesses on that attraction until it grows into a sense of ownership, a drive to conquer and claim. When Jesus warns that “everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart,” he uses the same word found in the Ten Commandments to refer to a person who “covets” his neighbor’s property. Lust takes attraction and turns it into the coveting of a woman’s body as though it were property. And men are responsible for their own thoughts and actions when this happens; they don’t get to blame it on what a woman is wearing.
Notice Jesus doesn’t say, “everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart, so ladies, be sure to dress more modestly.” Instead he says to the men, “if your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away”! The IVP New Testament Commentary notes that at the time, “Jewish men expected married Jewish women to wear head coverings to prevent lust. Jewish writers often warned of women as dangerous because they could invite lust (as in Sirach 25:21; Ps. Sol. 16:7-8), but Jesus placed the responsibility for lust on the person doing the lusting.”
People have expressed skepticism of the Princeton study cited by Rey, pointing out that it was drawn from a small sample size, included men who already held negative or sexist views of women, and used headless images of women either fully dressed or wearing a bikini to evoke responses. But regardless of whatever synapsis involuntarily fire in a man’s brain when he sees a woman’s body, he alone is responsible for the decision to objectify a woman or treat her with respect. Placing that burden upon women is unnecessary and unfair.
    2. We turn modesty into objectification when we assume there are single standards that apply to all people in all cultures.
Interestingly, the same study cited by Rey has been cited by a popular Muslim site as support for encouraging women to wear the hijab, which reveals something of how different cultures and faiths view modesty. I spent some time in India, where women in traditional saris exposed their midriffs and navels without a second thought, but would carefully avoid showing their knees. Rachel Marie Stone recently wrote an excellent piece for Christianity Today about how, in Malawi, women typically nurse in public without shame of exposing their breasts. In many cultures, a one-piece bathing suit would be considered scandalous; in others, bikinis-or even topless bathing- are the norm. What is considered modest or appropriate changes depending on culture and context. It also changes from woman to woman, depending on body type, personality, personal convictions and season in life. While we may long for a universal dress code that would make all of this simpler, we aren’t given one. Perhaps this is why Paul encouraged women to “adorn themselves with good deeds,” and why the valorous woman of Proverbs 31 is praised because “she clothes herself in strength and dignity.” At the end of the day, the most important things we project to the world are strength, dignity and good deeds; the sort of things that transcend culture, circumstance, and clothing.
The truth is, a man can choose to objectify a woman whether she’s wearing a bikini or a burqa. We don’t stop lust by covering up the female form; we stop lust by teaching men to treat women as human beings worthy of respect.
    3. Finally, we turn modesty into objectification when we make women ashamed of their bodies.
It doesn’t take long for a woman to realize that no matter what she wears, the curves of her body remain visible and will occasionally attract the notice of men. If this reality is met only with shame, if the female form is treated as inherently seductive and problematic, then women will inevitably feel ashamed of their bodies.
But our bodies are not something to be overcome; they are not dirty or shameful or inherently tempting. They are a beautiful part of what it means to be created in the image of God. These are the bodies that allow us to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world, the bodies that feel sun on our skin and sand between our toes, the bodies that nurse babies and cry with friends, the bodies that emerge from the waters of baptism and feast on the bread of communion. They are beautiful, and they are good.
So my advice for women looking for bathing suits this season is this: Don’t dress for men; dress for yourself. It’s not your responsibility to please men with either your sex appeal or your modesty; each man is different, so it would be a fool’s errand anyway. Instead, prioritize strength, dignity and good deeds, and then dress accordingly.
Find something that makes you comfortable. Find something that is ethically made. Find something that gives you the freedom to run with abandon into those incoming waves-hot sand tickling your feet, warm sun tingling your skin-and revel in this body and this world God gave you to enjoy.
And if it’s one of Rey’s designs, go for it. Just please leave a “Holly” for me!

I agree/disagree with you. Not all girls wanna wear bikinis because they want their bodies on display, maybe they want a tan or think they're cute, idk lol. i dont believe in being a feminist or anything, but men are allowed to show off their whole stomach and nobody can say ''they're asking for it'' or anything. and yes, girls do have an extra private part but that can easily be covered with a modest bikini.

I'm Catholic and have been reading Jackie's blog for some time now, however, if you're a girl and are wearing a bikini specifically to get a guy to notice you, then yea, maybe you shouldn't wear a bikini. If you're wearing it for another reason (comfort, fashion, etc.) then I see nothing wrong with that. There's nothing sinful about wearing a bikini, you will not rot in hell for wearing one. I grew up with the notion of girls needing to be careful of the things they wear because of how boys may react, and quite frankly, I'm sick of it. Boys/men are what their caregivers made them, not what some girl at the beach wore.

It is important that we note that modesty is actually subjective and cannot be dogmatically defined. It is subject to time, place culture and conditions. Too often when bible verses are quoted they are used out of their proper contexts and without considering the culture of the day, and the context of the entire chapter where it's taken from. The scripture about women wearing modest apparel is one such verse that is taken out of it's context and culture.

Modest dress is much more than not wearing bikinis.
The only issue that could be found with the presenter's clothing (of what can be seen) is that it is somewhat tight in the bodice. I have an old picture of some of my relatives from the early 20th century. In it, the wife is wearing a very loose fitting dress in the bodice. There is obviously something "happening" in the area, but one can't distinguish any clearly recognizable shape. The make seems to be similar to what a tuxedo shirt might be for a man today. It is stiff and doesn't cling to the body.
Most of the below standard are taken from the Marylike modesty standard.
“A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers’ breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of transparent material are improper.” (Cardinal-Vicar of Pope Pius XI, Cardinal Pompili, on 24 September 1928)
Modest dresses have sleeves extending at least to the elbows, and skirts reaching below the knees.
Modest dresses require full coverage for the bodice, chest, shoulders and back, except for a cut-out about the neck not exceeding two inches below the neckline in front and in back, and a corresponding two inches on the shoulders.
Modest dresses do not admit, as modest coverage, transparent fabric - laces, nets, organdy, nylon etc - unless sufficient backing is added.
Modest dresses avoid the improper use of flesh colored fabrics.
Modest dresses conceal rather than reveal the figure of the wearer; they do not unduly emphasize parts of the body. This prohibits dresses that are tight in the bodice area.
Modest dresses provide full coverage according to the standards from the Vatican after removing any outergarments such as a cape or jacket and after being seated.
These rules are a minimum and admit of no exception even for clothes for special purposes (e.g. athletics, playing, swimming) or places (e.g. beach).
It is unfortunate that it must be noted that pants or shorts are definitely immodest.
