  • Have you ever been sat in your art studio feeling uninspired and like you’ve hit a wall? Well this sometimes happens to me when I’ve spent too much time in the studio and that's when I know I need to get outside in nature and either paint en plein air, or take reference photos or both.
    In this video I will show you how to get inspired by getting out in the landscape and painting outdoors.
    I will show you how I painted a landscape of a view of the Bay of Islands, New Zealand which started off as a plein air painting and the was completed in the studio where I added more details.
    In this painting tutorial I cover the step-by-step process how I painted this art work en plein air and then the details added in the studio. I will also cover the following:
    Composition
    Colours
    Brushes
    Plein air painting gear
    Plein air painting process - painting the landscape
    Studio additions - final details
    If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy / use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

    Great video Sam, thanks for the inspiration to get outside. I am going to do that tomorrow for the first time. (I like how you managed to sneak a little metal into the video 4:40, awesome. My painting playlist these days is Ulver (first album), all Wintersun, and some Chelsea Wolfe)

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Jamie, yeah I love Ulver too. The William Blake album is my favourite one and Bergtatt their first album. If you look at some of my earlier time lapse videos a couple of them have some tracks from Haavard who used to be in Ulver, he played guitar on the first few albums. Anyway he gave me permission to use his music. You may recognise a couple of their tracks cause one is from Kveldssanger and the other is from Vargnatt their first demo. Haavard is a very talented guitar player.

    • @jamiewashere
      @jamiewashere Před 3 lety

      @@SamuelEarpArtist Haavard is great yes! His acoustic guitar stuff sounds so great. Lately my painting playlist has shifted a bit, I dusted off some of the old Opeth albums, and have also been listening to a lot of Tigran Hamasyan while sketching and painting, it's great music and has a lot of the elements I like about metal, its complex, cool time signatures, lots going on and also melodic with lots of feel. Recommended if you are ever feel like you're in a music listening rut.

    Hey Sam love the video as always! I’ve been curious to see your process of how you take your taped canvas and get it to a framed finished state. Do you stretch it after you paint it or do you just put on a masonite panel? I couldn’t see if you already have a video demonstrating that but I would love to know what you do! Maybe that could be a next video 🙃

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  Před 5 lety +3

      Thanks Jacob, loose canvas can be stretched afterwards. Another way is to have them mounted and then framed. If I am going to mount a painting on a panel I prepare the canvas before I start painting on it. I will definitely keep this in mind for a future video 😊
