A tidbit for those who are still in the closet, getting some of these books in ebook format is a great way to read and use the books without your family knowing, and you can even highlight and take notes. Just an FYI :)

Thank you for this! This couldn't have come at a better time as I was thinking about shopping around. Honestly, it is a bit difficult and intimidating to shift through all the titles as a beginner trying to get the most bang for your buck, while also trying not to fooled by the more aesthetically pleasing books that choose design over substance. I hope this becomes a series and would love to see book reccommandations on: elemental craft, defense magic, faeries, folklore, sabbats, druidry, hoodoo, kitchen craft, ancestral work, etc... Truthfully, any topic(s) you've studied and personally feel like you've read enough on to reccommend specific titles on.

I would really recommend Blackthorn’s botanical magic by Amy Blackthorn. I have been using Cunningham’s book for over 15 years and although I love that book and still use it for magical purposes , im more comfortable using Blackthorn’s book for therapeutic uses.
The ways her book is structured makes it alot easier to study imo. 🌿🍄🤓❤️

Besides reading books on witchcraft, I personally think a good way to research these topics is to study history, religion and/or mythology. I am already a myth nerd so I often don't just stop with surface level information, but I try to find their older roots and the way a diety was celebrated and things like that. I am in a semi broom closet so this helps cover up since it was be considered academic and people all know I am a myth nerd (greek and roman myths particularly)

So glad you mentioned checking the bibliographic pages for further research! Too many people forget that's available in almost any book you might use for research ( at least, reliable sources should have one). It's a fantastic way to customize your studies, and often local libraries either have a copy or can temporarily acquire one for books you'd like to peruse but aren't sure about purchasing. Many thanks, Hearth 💚

I found it too basic, as I had already read a lot of beginner stuff and wanted more depth into herbalism and specifically green witchcraft, which it's really not. But it is exactly a springboard, well said! *Puts the other books on my list* Besides, I have Green Witchcraft II by Moura, its the best book I've read on green witchcraft.

please please please dont try to identify plants from magical books. i wouldn't even attempt it. magical books dont have very details descriptions of plants, they dont have colors, they usually dont include stem types, leaf types, flower types and much more which are VITAL for properly identifying a plant. They also dont usually tell you when a certain plant is often mistaken for another plant. And if you ingest the wrong thing it could make you sick or even kill you! And you don't even have to consume a plant to be hurt by it. For instance some plants (i.e. poison ivy or poison oak) will give you terrible rashes if even touches which wont kill you but it will cause a lot of discomfort. Just please if youre interested in wildcrafting dont even risk it with magical books. Buy a book that is MEANT for identifying plants in your area. And use the magical book purely as a supplement. Thank you for reading and stay safe!

How about book recommendations on defensive magick, hexes or curses? I've read Utterly Wicked by Dorothy Morrison and I just loved it. I mean it's not only for those who really practice these types of magick but also for those who want to know more about the "other" sides that magick comes with... I just think it is a super interesting topic and it would be great if someone else could just give some inspiration. I'm from Germany and I don't have any friends who are interested in that topic so I have to collect all of my knowledge from the internet, especially on CZcams or from books... In the age of technology you could also do a reverse picture search on google and also google what the plant is supposed to smell like to give you another indicator. Mint is a great example of a smell making the main difference of if that is or isn't the plant you are looking at, rub a leaf between your fingers and there's no doubt. But yeah, one still needs common sense but it's never been easier to identify plants

  • @Lillyluvsanime

I have a book that has that, "using witchcraft and Wicca interchangeably," problem.
It's called, "The Witch's Way," by Shawn Robbins and Leanna Greenaway. It's a good book otherwise but it does continually use the terms witchcraft and Wicca interchangeably, referring to witchcraft as, "a faith where you must carve out your own path..." and, "the nice thing about the craft is that some people will embrace it completely, whereas others will only take parts of it; a select few may merge their practices with other religions, such as Christianity."
So, equating Wicca and witchcraft as one-and-the-same, calling witchcraft a religion and saying that if you're a witch that follows a different religion, that you must be combining Wicca and whatever other religion.
Personally, I'm sort of on the Unitarian Universalist side of Christianity (I believe that all these different religions are extensions/interpretations of the same spiritual truth), so I don't exactly follow the Wiccan religion, but I do believe that there's truth in it and that it's connected to my faith. Personally I'm a Christian Witch. Pretty sure I always have been, for a few years I tried to suppress my draw to the practice, tried to ignore the senses and abilities I had, but I didn't feel right until I reclaimed my practice.

Another great book that goes deeper than Cunningham's Herbal Encyclopedia is "Botanical Magic: by Amy Blackthorn. Excellent book, i love it more than Cunningham's and i always reached for him (i still love both, but Amy REALLY gives you info!).
I suggest checking out both, especially if you crave more info than a lot of the books coming out are giving.

  • @moonshadowessentialssoapsn5287

I love the encyclopedia of herbs by Scott Cunningham!!! My is well loved! I have notes written in it on almost all the pages is extra info that I write down and different combinations for different things and I use it so much that the pages in the back are starting to come off the spine. But I can’t get another one because I can’t rewrite all the info that I’ve added to it. Is it just me or does anyone else do this. The book from him on essential oil’s I’m on my second book because I couldn’t save it anymore from falling apart. I also will be getting the encyclopedia of essential oil’s it’s a big book but it’s phenomenal. I also am almost finished with Scott Cunningham’s Incense,Oils and Brews but im gonna purchase The Garden Witches Herbal. I heard great reviews on it. You were very helpful.

How I wish I knew Ann Moura's books have the most deceptive titles. Alas, bought one of her books, and ended up skipping through more than a half of the book because I'm not Wiccan. Shame lol. But thanks for the recommendations!
I do have the Cunningham's encyclopedia and it's amazing. I had to translate most of the book because I'm Czech and I have no idea about half the plants' names. But still, it is not as detailed as I would've liked. I have my mother's herb encyclopedia to cross reference with, but for the life of me I can't remember the name - but it is the most detailed book I know.
If anyone is interested in that, just ping me, I can find out the title at home and share it 😅

Hi Hearth, I am a beginner witch and have come to LOVE you channel! I'm wondering why you spell Magick with a K instead of just a C? What is the difference?

The k is usually added to represent actual magick practice, and not tv/movie sort of magic.

I had a different Scott Cunningham book that unfortunately got severely water damaged and is now much too moldy to safely use.... I need to get a new copy. I believe it was "earth magic", but I'm not sure at the moment. Edit, it was "Earth, Air, Fire and Water" I loved that book

Have you (or anyone here in the comments really) read "Tree Magic: Connecting with the Spirit & Wisdom of Trees" by Sandra Kynes? Would you recommend it?

Just to clarify, if I’m looking for medicinal information, the first two books are best for that?
