Any time a person asks about happy sounding songs that are actually super dark, this song always comes up
OR a song that sounds depressing but is actually about hope. The Sound Of Silence.
Super depressing but really upbeat: Bullet by Hollywood Undead
It’s catchy but the lyrics are so dark!
run for your life- the beatles
Theme song from MASH...period.
"Voices Carry" by Til Tuesday is another one.
The look on his face when he realized what the lyrics said was priceless.
And very relatable. I had it on my playlist until I realized what I was hearing and then it creeped me out so bad I took it off. Then... my 14-year-old found it. Oh, boy. Every time it plays in the car I feel like I have to reiterate that it's messed up and then we go ahead and listen. That beat is hard to ignore.
@@BeeWhistler Hollywood Undead has a song called Bullet that's very upbeat and happy... except the song is a out the desire to commit suicide.
That’s what happens to me sometimes. I just listen to a song and I don’t listen to what the lyrics are saying. Then I realize what the lyrics are saying and it changes my entire perspective on the song. It’s crazy how just a few words change the whole meaning!
I once ended up singing in the car along to semi charmed life. Was more of a facepalm moment than anything else. I was just glad no one else was around to witness it.
@@LukeZwarteVacht dude my friend showed me that and i wasnt ready for that
The issue of youth violence is a matter close to the group. Lead singer and writer in the band Mark Foster was bullied in high school, while bassist Cubbie Fink has a cousin who survived the Columbine High School Massacre in 1999. Fink said of his cousin's experience, "She was actually in the library when everything went down, so I actually flew out to be with her the day after it happened and experienced the trauma surrounding it and saw how affected she was by it. She is as close as a sister, so obviously, it affected me deeply. So to be able to have a song to create a platform to talk about this stuff has been good for us."
Many have written letters to Foster's record label and called radio stations to complain that the song was glorifying school shootings. He explained, "The song is not about condoning violence at all. It's the complete opposite. The song is an amazing platform to have a conversation with your kids about something that shouldn't be ignored, to talk about it in a loving way."
Thanks for the explanation! I didn't know this either and have heard this track so many times since it came out.
@@33MasterJordan yw thanks! 🙂
Thank you for this comment!! I'm from Colorado and the impact that Columbine had on the whole Denver metro area was significant! It took me a long time to go see the memorial. It is a beautiful tribute, though very somber. Brought me back to that time for sure. I'm not in that area now, yet when I go back and see the Aurora memorial, I bet it will be hard to visit as well.
@@nonya9948 yw, thank you for your beautiful comment. When this tragedy happened it was so horrific to read about it and see those scenes take place before our very eyes, for all of us everywhere. I can't imagine how hard it was for you and your community as a whole. Though it's hard to visit the memorial it's good it's there to keep the memory of those killed alive. It helps the young ones who survived this tragedy honor their classmates too which they deserve. These survivors had to deal with extreme trauma and injuries and still have to deal with the aftermath everyday. It is so important that the topic of youth violence and school shootings continue to be discussed. Thank you for sharing your experience. It means alot. I hope you are okay. Take care.
Problem is a lot of the shooter type people think this is praising the kid with a gun.
I just read up on this: the bass player has a cousin who survived the Columbine school shooting.
The song is from the perspective of a bullied, homicidal dude.
That's sad man.
Word.
@@Kim-hc5si I suggested this b played on Halloween with the clip filmed in the school which was banned from the US for a long time because to me it's the scariest song/clip.
Not a fun fact, but after the sandy hook shooting this song had limited air time since the subject matter hit hard. Very sad indeed.
It was the same for the Song "Die Young" by Ke$ha, that one had VERY limited air time if not just banned.
Damn. I knew it was about school shootings but I didn't know that last bit. Wow
You were falling into the groove but you kept coming back to that feeling of something ain’t right.
Music speaks, music feels.
He could feel the discordance
Caught a lot of people off guard.
So many people never listen to the lyrics.
You hear an upbeat tune that makes you want to dance but, when you actually listen to the lyrics, you’re like WTF!
I had heard it for years and it was on the radio at work, someone said to look up the lyrics and my jaw dropped reading it... Never had an idea...
I 'member when MTV censored almost every single word in this song. It's one of those songs that sounds all upbeat, but when ya actually listen to the lyrics, it's hella messed up. 🖤
It's like "Semi Charmed Life", really catchy but really dark.
@@MichaelDavis-bj2bs No joke!
MTV has music? Huh I never would have guessed. 🤔
@@tylerkobel8028 They *used to* play actual music/videos. This was honestly one of the last videos I remember them showin, just because it was so heavily censored.
I dunno what the Hell the "M" in MTV even stands for anymore.
@HardNews TV4 Thank you for mentioning her. I went to listen to "Dawn" and "He in control "
R.i..P to all the kids that have lost their lifes in a school shooting 😢😢
R. I. P. To all those school shooters who got killed by cops, electric chairs and poisons because they got bullied to insanity, not helped by parents or teachers and bursted out in violence against their innocent classmates
RIP all the people who got killed by a gun
@@yasininn76 I was bullied incessantly through the entirety of my 13 years in school. I used to wish my school would burn to the ground. I used to wish I’d die in my sleep. I used to wish certain people would move or get sick or die so they’d leave me alone. Never once did I consider ending someone’s life myself. I definitely understood the motives behind these people’s actions but that doesn’t remotely excuse the damage they did. This is coming from someone who was in 7th grade when the Columbine shooting took place.
@@elizabethanne8729 you know, every person has a different breaking point. Maybe you're just psychologically stronger than them or maybe they have different kind of reaction when faced with intense stress. I myself am a more violent people towards others and not to myself when faced with problems and stress caused by other people.

@@elizabethanne8729 tldr, they are TOTALLY justified, in many ways.
You got it faster than most. Errybody hipswayin' ...not listening to the lyrics...
Agreed. A lot of people don't realize the song was written about school shootings until they've listened a few times or had it explained to them.
The song is about the Columbine School Shootings. You right, not many people picked up on this because of the candy coated beat.
@@greeneyes674 I thought it was just school shootings in general.
I know man, blew my mind when this first came out how popular it was and how next to nobody actually knew what it was about, with lyrics as simple as can be lol too much of a groove for anyone to pay attention
@@squidwardshouse5431 close, more like an insight to a homicidal kids mind, but it was ultimately more a statement regarding declining mental health of the youth.
And a kind of “F You” to hipsters
Everyone gets nervous as the quiet kid plays his favorite song for the whole class.

So dark man.
@@alaskaheidi2955 with such a catchy tune. 💁♀️

Around the time this song came out, there was a mall shooting near me in a Vonmar that killed several. The kid's name was Robert and he took his dad's old shotgun. Eerily similar to the lyrics.
Holy shit😳
Considering the theme of this song I think you should look at "youth of the nation" by POD.

For some reason when a band takes a song about something dark, and pairs it with a tune so catchy and happy that most have no idea what they are humming, makes me like the song so much more. It's one of life's cool inside jokes.
They did a live version of this song that turns badass. It has a big drop then becomes house/techno for awhile. Surprisingly good. It looks like it was on a late night show.

Theory of a deadman "Rx" has a lot of good whistling in it. Damn good song at that. One I can definitely relate with.
Wow I'm an old lady & have never heard this. Thank you for reacting to it or I probably would have lived the rest of my life without hearing it. After reading the comments & realizing that this upbeat tune was about Columbine I had to watch again. As usual Leo you dissect the song & try to interpret it & I love you for that! RIP to all the victims of this horrific event. Interesting song...
Its not about columbine thats just what some people think
There are other super dark songs with beautiful or catchy melodies but super dark lyrics:
1) ‘You’re Beautiful’ by James Blunt (watch the vid, it’s about a crazy stalker committing suicide)
2) Maggie Mae by Rod Stewart (about a woman in her 40s or 50s seducing a boy around 14 or 15)

Yeah that’s an awesome 90’s song!!
Yeahhhhhh
What I love most about this song is when I’m a good dancing mood I can dance to it without hearing the sad lyrics that are relatable to real life problems but when I’m sad I can be chill and cry my eyes out to this song to get my emotions out when thinking about how bad I feel for people that go through things like this
When the school THOTTY says you're not a HOTTY so you take out the SHOTTY..

They actually banned this song for a few months on the radio after all those poor little kids got shot in sandy hook school :(
I remember suggesting this when you said something about an uppity beat with messed up lyrics. You really do read all comments and show love to all your subscribers. That’s part of the reason we love you back ❤️❤️❤️
The first song of this nature I believe is " I Don't like Mondays " by the band The Boomtown Rats.. the singer Bob went on to portray " Pink" in 'Pink Floyd The Wall' .. a great movie.

I love how deep you were analyzing how weird as f the song started and by the end ur jamming. Love the reaction videos. It's clear to me that you enjoy a wide variety of music and have good taste.
The first line: Roberts got a quick hand; This Song is about a poor kid with a late/hard working dad that is isolated. He finds his dads gun in a box with other fun stuff, and plans to kill the rich kids(the other kids with the pumped up kicks) in his class/school.

Yes to Don't Stop, video is hilarious!
I love the negotiation happening in your face as you start to take in the lyrics - and decide that yeah, you’re still going to jam
I seem to recall when some girl auditioned on American Idol with this song, and she sang it unironically in the vapidest, most upbeat way, oblivious to the meaning of the lyrics. The judges reamed her out.
This song is really good. When it first came out my daughter had to tell what the song meant. Love your reaction great job.
Lyric:
I reason with my cigarette... said your hair's on fire...
Written and sung from the first person perspective of a bullied kid, who becomes a kid who kills, a school shooter who blows away the kids; the kids with their "pumped up kicks"- AKA the kids run making their kicks pump up and down cause they're running from the bullets. Brilliant doesn't even begin to describe this song I still love. Even after all these years.
Your reactions are so direct, true and honest...this is a great song and you NAILED it!
You dig this melody/sound, you'll love MGMT "Electric Feel". I can see you tearing it up to it. Much more positive message too.

Love that you reviewed this haunting, yet somehow fun, ass-moving song xx
There was alot of controversy when this song came out. The same happened when Jeremy by Pearl Jam came out. Both songs from the perspective of the shooter.
Yeah Jeremy was way earlier. Another song(underground rap) Ill Bill Anatomy of a school shooting
True. The difference, of course, is that Jeremy shot himself, whereas the kid in this song wants to shoot his classmates.

Definitely sends a strong message. Makes you think how much of an impact bullying can have on anyone especially in the formative years. Some people can't take it and are sent into a violent rage. Others get depressed and usually end up hurting themselves. Very serious problem. Sad reality.

As someone who writes music, this is one of my favourite tricks to see a songwriter pull - upbeat tune with a dark story in the lyrics. Love seeing people caught off guard. It's ironic, it also kinda says - look at our happy carefree teen life, oh there's actually a horror show going on behind the curtain of social media feeds and what adults think life is like for teens, especially those who live in fear of these shootings. It's darkly tongue-in-.cheek.
I grew up in a surf town, the song was very popular with us. But, until not one year ago, did I finally figure out what it was about. Still love it. Fun, cool, AND edgy, it turns out.

You're good for catching onto the lyrics the first time listening! Back when this song first came out (2012? 2011?), I was just having a good time, jammin out on it for probably ...a good week or two before the lyrics hit me lol. I guess I was slow on the uptake! You caught on pretty quick! 👏🏼👏🏼
It's about a school shooter and it was purposely made to sound happy and vague. It's about how nowadays school shootings just seem normal, like the nation mourns for two weeks, forgets and it happens again and again and nothing is done to put an end to it. An even earlier song to check out on the same subject is I Don't Like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats.
I remember the first time my daughter came home from school, she said mom I want you to hear a song, she brought her friend in to the house who played this song and they both looked at each other and when they looked at me they were both crying, because they didn’t think that I would hear the words underneath the dance track. I instantly knew that this song was about a school shooting. This was after Columbine. My daughter asked me mom is it going to always be this way. I had no honest answer for her, now her daughter is 19 and has like many other young children growing up as this is their reality. The pumped up kicks represents the wealthy children, the ones who tend to bully or look down on others.
I remember when this came out, my niece loved it and got me to listen to it. (I to have to analyze) every song I hear. When I told her it was about a school shooting, she flipped out.
He's heard these songs at least once before recording these, but still awesome to see him enjoy the music we been listening to our whole lives
