  • Soldering glass retaining tabs onto a clock bezel using resistance soldering method. Be sure to pre-bend the tabs so they are pressing on the glass when soldered in place. Also important to tin the tabs with solder prior to attempting the job.

    Excellent, exactly what I was looking for! Works perfectly! Thank you!

    Unbelievable. I am definitely going to try this. I have the exact same need that is being demoed here; reattaching tabs on a clock bezel. When I have tried it with a torch or resistance soldering iron, it frequently does not work, or it ruins the painted image on the clock glass. Thanks again for this video.

    The solder gun looks like a Weller which is the best kind. I will try this method and see how it works out. certainly cheaper that buying a real resistance unit for 3 to 500 bucks. Thanks for the info Harry. rjs.

    That's cool! I'll have to try a version of this for soldering on PC boards. I don't think I'll need as much wattage. I was thinking that there could be some type of circuit that would ensure that you've made the connection on the tips before pulling the trigger to avoid any sparking since that might be bad for circuits. At least I could use it to solder wires and connectors.

    That is awesome. I have one of those solder guns, but I am wondering if I really need to cut the end off? I soldered some pennies together of course they can break apart if forced, but does it create more heat by transmitting electricity through the prongs? I'm very curious as to how it works, by heat alone or by electricity?

    This is a great video Henry! What type of soldier do you use to do this? As a clock collector I run into this type of repair frequently. Thanks!

    Thanks for taking the time to film and post this Henry. Is that a soldering iron mod? Or is that something you purchased commercially?

      It's a modification. I cut the end off the tip. That way instead of the heat being generated at the tip, the heat (resistance) is on the piece of metal it is touching. Very quick results and no discoloration of the bezel on the outside.

    Can this method be used to solder electronic components?

    • @henrysmithsr7727
      @henrysmithsr7727  Před 7 lety

      I really have no idea, I suppose it might but I would think it would depend on the delicate nature of the electronic component.

    The word solder has an 'l'. Why don't the yanks pronounce the 'l'?

      We are making up for you Limeys adding an F to lieutenant, some how turning it into left-tenant. Or calling the Thames the Tim’s, or making a schedule into a shed-ual. 😂
      I say tomato, toemattoh, potato, poetahtoe, let’s call the whole thing off. 😅
