Can a Primitive Bow be Lethal on Headshots? (HD)

- primitivepathways.com Billy Berger tests the penetration capabilities of a primitive bow and stone tipped arrows against different deer heads to see if a primitive bow can generate enough force to drive a stone tipped arrow through a deer's skull and deep enough into the brain to be lethal. Billy Berger uses a 55 lb raw hickory longbow (not fire hardened or heat treated) and a 650 grain rivercane arrow tipped with flint points made of raw Texas flint. The points were made a bit thicker so they would be more durable and better able to survive the hard impact of striking bone.
Can a primitive bow generate enough force to drive a stone tipped arrow into the brain of a deer deep enough to be lethal if you chance a head shot? Let's find out! - Zábava
the skull doing what it is supposed to do: deflect
Yes it did.
I’m a simple man. I see Primitive Pathways post, I smash that like button. He possess the knowledge of my ancestors and acknowledges those who came before him. Truly a man
Thank you!
@@primitivepathways Great vid!
What do you think the upper limits are to hickory? I made one wide. two and a half inches it's pulling about 75 lb at 29
I once shot a buck in the head from a tree stand with my 357 mag, he dropped like a rock. When I got down onto the ground I heard something in the leaves and to my surprise the deer had gotten to his feet and was staggering off. I finished him off and I saw where the bullet struck the base of one of his antlers and just knocked him out for about a minute.
4:55 damn, you're right, this would have never occurred to me, that's so cool!
Yeah foreshafts are really ingenious. I make all my hunting arrows with them.
Thanks Mr. Berger for a very interesting study/demonstration. I hope this is a sign of more videos to come!
Thanks for the test. Got your original DVD and probably seen every video.
Hope you are doing this for years to come.
Been here since 2015, always make sure to watch your videos. Thanks brother
Awesome! Thank you!
the sheer speed and power of this ancient technology is how our ancestors survived millenia and ice ages.
Great comment 👍
YA THE NATIVE AMERICANS WERE EXCELLENT HUNTERS
Frankly all of those glancing blows shows that not only is the skull doing his job and deflecting things as a round object should, but it is also showing that taking headshots typically isn't a very good idea to begin with. That's why instead of doing headshots any kind of Humane Hunter typically will only go for the vitals of the chest cavity.
Awesome video Billy!
thanks so much!
Billy back at his best. Please never ever quit ❤💪🙏
Thanks! I plan to release more videos soon!
Such nice stone points and mounting. A master at work. Despite that the video shows the reality of just how difficult a challenge it would have been to try for head shots with primitive bow & arrows. Great video.
Thanks! Yeah I just wanted to see if a primitive bow could generate enough force to drive an arrow into a deer's brain. Although it didn't perform as well as I hoped on the larger, mature deer, it was certainly lethal on smaller, younger deer.
I LOVE these experimental tests and videos!
The deflecting is the same reason helmets are round. Even today, bullets bounce, arrows deflected, swords bounced away.
I'm not a hunter (though I'm dying to go hunting) and am AMAZED at the wounds the stone points make. No wonder our ancestors could kill mammoth and bison.
Greetings Billy, your aim is impressive.
Thank you for your Videos I see them since you factored the flatbow of osage in The Forest, and I became a primitive archer, greetings from Spain, Valencia.
Your videos are great. Learning so much. :)
Glad you like them! Thanks!
I miss these videos billy!
Thanks! I'm gonna try to release more like this in the near future.
The pine pitch and sinew held up incredible well!!
Yeah it did. I was really surprised at its strength.
You have been gone for a while, looking forward to more content

2 videos in one week?? Christmas came early this year.
Hahaha...thanks! I wish I had more time so I could upload even more. But I'm gonna try to be more productive on releasing videos.
4:54 they had interchangeable arrow heads even back then?? I genuinely didn’t know that, that’s genius! :O
These are really good experiments. It's impressive wat our ancestors made off the land. I make bows too...good enough to hunt with but still a bit rough...and am constantly surprised how powerful just a peace of worked hickory can be. In its proper use primitive bows are great tools for use and learning
Can you test on what materials hold up best after hitting bone?
I would love to see a video or two of you hunting
2 pp videos this week, it must be Christmas! Thanks for the uploaded Billy!
What do you think about those internet photos of shoulder bones and spines with the stone point whole, sharp, lodged and piercing?
Most people were calling them fake. But most people have no idea how well stone actually works.
I say it depends on the type of stone and design of point. I don't think obcidian is tough enough. And I've never worked flint or chert so mabie.
I don't think I'd try a head shot unless I absolutely had to.
Everything just works so well for vitals.
The Conclusion is, it's a dam rough day to be a deer!
I have a shoulder bone from a wild pig that I killed several years ago and it has a stone point embedded halfway through it. I think some stone points buried in bones may be fakes...but there are some authentic examples that are real. Flint points are stronger, but sometimes obsidian can be stronger than you think and it will survive some impossible shots...
More videos!!!!!
You still selling Osage seeds and will they come up this year if I buy and plant some now? Thanks
Yes I still sell osage seeds!! And yes they'll sprout if you plant them now.
yessss
Been a while...still love your vids tho. Please do some fluflu vid or something
If you're going to kill a medium to large animal with a bow you're going to aim for the most likely successful spot and that's the vitals EVERY TIME. This video is a perfect example of that.
Love this video, no nonsense.
The truth is primitive equipment isn't incredibly powerful or accurate. It is definitely capable gear, but it relies ok the hunters ability to get CLOSE to game rather than his marksmanship.
I wonder why nobody has any love for traditional crossbows its like everyone forgot how much they were used for hunting from medieval times well into the 18 century.
Between oak walnut and hickory, Wich is the best for making a bow
Both are really good, it just depends on what you're most familiar using.
@@primitivepathways I've never made a bow before, I just watched a couple of your videos and thought it would be pretty interesting to make one
Wow...I sure wouldn't want to get shot in the head by that!
was this a fire hardened bow?
Try a profile shot. Clean that ear out on a quartering away, eyeball on quartering to you, in between on a straight profile shot.
I love you billy
Thanks! Love you too!
Was that bow fire hardened?
No it wasn't. It was just a raw hickory bow. If it was fire hardened it would have been a good bit faster and the results may have been different.
Try steel trade points
That's a great idea. I may have to do another video on that topic!
I wanna see the snakes
came here from that homemade flame thrower
iod like to see you get that close to a dear and release a boost bow without it flinching lol not happening
How about them Zombie deer?
get a bone foreshaft perhaps?
yes that would definitely be much stronger. I might have to try that and do another test.
Stay calm and release another arrow
Yes!
first comment!
Conclusion. No point of aiming head. Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱
Yeah that's true. I just wanted to see what a primitive bow and stone tipped arrows was capable of.
@@primitivepathways do you think a 70 or 80 lb bow would be better? What about a war bow?
The things we do when our women are elsewhere
Hahaha.... That's what makes us great. When the women are gone, we experiment and learn new things so society can use that knowledge in the future.
The answer is NO ! yes you can kill a thing with a head shot with a bow as light as 25 lbs in draw weight . Yes it is possible to kill and animal with an arrow to the head . But you are taking the very real risk of bone deflection and injuring an animal horribly without delivering a killing blow. NEVER SHOOT THE ANIMALS YOU HUNT IN THE HEAD WITH AN ARROW ! I was 15 years old when I first ran into a deer who had been shot in the head with an arrow . It ran around with an arrow sticking out of his head for 2 years before I finally got a shot on him to put him out of his misery . By that time his right eye had rotted out of the deer's head and it had a massive infection in the other eye socket and in both ears . This Buck was 4.5 years old and when I shot it it weighted 65 lbs undressed . Another time I saw a Black Bear with an arrow sticking out of his neck when someone attempted to shoot it in the head and its thick skull pushed the arrow throw its neck tissue and cut its ear off on the way in . This Bear was captured by DNR and nursed back to health but had it not been captured so quickly it too would have suffered for long periods of time . If you want to humanely kill anything shoot it through the heart ,lung, Kidneys, Liver or any combination of these organs ! That is the most effective way to kill an animal fast . I have had deer die within 20 seconds of being shot through the lungs and heart but most die within a minute or two of being hit in those vitals . The effectiveness of a gunshot to the head has more to do with the concussion a bullet brings to the brain cavity . You do not get this effect much with arrows and people need to get the idea of a head shot as the most leathal way of killing something BECAUSE IT IS NOT !
I dropped two with stone points and cane arrow. It hit back of skull and dropped another in spine. Was disappointed in my aim but "down is down" according to a friend lol I regained my confidence with a clean heart shot with another point later
