Can a Primitive Bow be Lethal on Headshots? (HD)

  • primitivepathways.com Billy Berger tests the penetration capabilities of a primitive bow and stone tipped arrows against different deer heads to see if a primitive bow can generate enough force to drive a stone tipped arrow through a deer's skull and deep enough into the brain to be lethal. Billy Berger uses a 55 lb raw hickory longbow (not fire hardened or heat treated) and a 650 grain rivercane arrow tipped with flint points made of raw Texas flint. The points were made a bit thicker so they would be more durable and better able to survive the hard impact of striking bone.
    Can a primitive bow generate enough force to drive a stone tipped arrow into the brain of a deer deep enough to be lethal if you chance a head shot? Let's find out!

    I once shot a buck in the head from a tree stand with my 357 mag, he dropped like a rock. When I got down onto the ground I heard something in the leaves and to my surprise the deer had gotten to his feet and was staggering off. I finished him off and I saw where the bullet struck the base of one of his antlers and just knocked him out for about a minute.

    Frankly all of those glancing blows shows that not only is the skull doing his job and deflecting things as a round object should, but it is also showing that taking headshots typically isn't a very good idea to begin with. That's why instead of doing headshots any kind of Humane Hunter typically will only go for the vitals of the chest cavity.

      Thanks! Yeah I just wanted to see if a primitive bow could generate enough force to drive an arrow into a deer's brain. Although it didn't perform as well as I hoped on the larger, mature deer, it was certainly lethal on smaller, younger deer.

    The deflecting is the same reason helmets are round. Even today, bullets bounce, arrows deflected, swords bounced away.
    I'm not a hunter (though I'm dying to go hunting) and am AMAZED at the wounds the stone points make. No wonder our ancestors could kill mammoth and bison.

    What do you think about those internet photos of shoulder bones and spines with the stone point whole, sharp, lodged and piercing?
    Most people were calling them fake. But most people have no idea how well stone actually works.
    I say it depends on the type of stone and design of point. I don't think obcidian is tough enough. And I've never worked flint or chert so mabie.
    I don't think I'd try a head shot unless I absolutely had to.
    Everything just works so well for vitals.
    The Conclusion is, it's a dam rough day to be a deer!

    • @primitivepathways
      @primitivepathways  Před 3 lety

      I have a shoulder bone from a wild pig that I killed several years ago and it has a stone point embedded halfway through it. I think some stone points buried in bones may be fakes...but there are some authentic examples that are real. Flint points are stronger, but sometimes obsidian can be stronger than you think and it will survive some impossible shots...

    If you're going to kill a medium to large animal with a bow you're going to aim for the most likely successful spot and that's the vitals EVERY TIME. This video is a perfect example of that.

  • @Trickydickysticky
    @Trickydickysticky Před 3 lety

    Love this video, no nonsense.
    The truth is primitive equipment isn't incredibly powerful or accurate. It is definitely capable gear, but it relies ok the hunters ability to get CLOSE to game rather than his marksmanship.
    I wonder why nobody has any love for traditional crossbows its like everyone forgot how much they were used for hunting from medieval times well into the 18 century.

    The answer is NO ! yes you can kill a thing with a head shot with a bow as light as 25 lbs in draw weight . Yes it is possible to kill and animal with an arrow to the head . But you are taking the very real risk of bone deflection and injuring an animal horribly without delivering a killing blow. NEVER SHOOT THE ANIMALS YOU HUNT IN THE HEAD WITH AN ARROW ! I was 15 years old when I first ran into a deer who had been shot in the head with an arrow . It ran around with an arrow sticking out of his head for 2 years before I finally got a shot on him to put him out of his misery . By that time his right eye had rotted out of the deer's head and it had a massive infection in the other eye socket and in both ears . This Buck was 4.5 years old and when I shot it it weighted 65 lbs undressed . Another time I saw a Black Bear with an arrow sticking out of his neck when someone attempted to shoot it in the head and its thick skull pushed the arrow throw its neck tissue and cut its ear off on the way in . This Bear was captured by DNR and nursed back to health but had it not been captured so quickly it too would have suffered for long periods of time . If you want to humanely kill anything shoot it through the heart ,lung, Kidneys, Liver or any combination of these organs ! That is the most effective way to kill an animal fast . I have had deer die within 20 seconds of being shot through the lungs and heart but most die within a minute or two of being hit in those vitals . The effectiveness of a gunshot to the head has more to do with the concussion a bullet brings to the brain cavity . You do not get this effect much with arrows and people need to get the idea of a head shot as the most leathal way of killing something BECAUSE IT IS NOT !
