    Don’t have enough time at the time of writing to watch the full video. However, the first 2 mins. resonated so well with me, that i HAD to add it to my watch later list.

    My wife and I just finished reading a book (The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer) that touched on the idea of a day of being disconnected, the author called it a Sabbath and it has the same idea you hit on here.
    You sometimes don’t realize just how addicted and over-connected you are until you try to disconnect, but when you do the rewards are so worth it.

    • @camshand
      @camshand  Před 5 měsíci +2

      You know what, I just finished reading that book! And that's where I felt a huge connection with the word Hurry.
      As it outlines, it's okay to be Busy, I'm always Busy, and if you're Busy doing what you love and what matter's that's fine.
      But Hurry... when you're hurrying to do more than what's possible, you'll loose sight of what's truly important and that's when you need to slow down.
      It's emphasis on the Sabbath and cultural shift to be out shopping on Sundays, working from home and always "connected" prompted me to revisit 4000 weeks which is where I originally got the idea of committing to dedicating Sundays to Rest.
      That's where I broke it down to it's simplest form, have my Phone automatically go to Do not Disturb all Sunday, and make a habit to not use it, keep it out of arms reach.
      And Guess what, yesterday I slowed down enough to play the Piano, and oh did it feel good 😁

    I'm 45 and I was medically discharged from the army in 2016 after 20 years' service. I had a breakdown in the end because I never switched off (as well as other things) and I ran out of steam. With no intent to sound big-headed, I'm not an idiot and my military career was such that I needed to think quickly on my feet to make extremely important decisions, but following that break-down, my whole approach to order, time management and purpose took on the effect of a jelly wobbling on a plate; I had no sense of direction, but I knew I needed to do something to get back on track. Fast forward 7 years and I'm nearly back in that hole, with the added pressure of depression and PTSD, but one thing rings true - switch off the god damn phone and stay away from the computer when you don't need them, or at arranged times. You talk about Sundays - and the book was right - shops were never open on Sunday in the UK - heck, even newsagents closed at midday. Whilst serving in Germany, Sunday was like a day of enforced rest for the Germans. No shops were open, you couldn't hang your washing out to dry and some form of exercise was promoted; we would see the locals riding their bikes, walking with walking poles, roller-blading... ...Something which is forgotten in the UK. I started wood turning as a hobby because learning a new skill would make me concentrate on creativity and get my brain working again. I can be lost in that creativity because it is just me in my workshop and your have to keep your mind clear in order to enjoy it and concentrate on the craft... ...No doom scrolling or social media negativity.
    Your video has created inspiration, and your backstory, thought process and approach are refreshing, encouraging and inspiring. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together and sharing your frustrations and solutions.
    Duly subscribed.

    Yeah, you are right! I remember I used to doom scroll every night through CZcams Shorts, and sometimes I had a day/week break where I didn't use Shorts at all! Those were also the reasons why I quit short-form content altogether! The only social media I currently have on my phone is Discord, and Brave for CZcams and CZcams Music!

    Inspiring stuff, Cam. Cheers. I do need to use my phone less, especially when I'm at the park with the kids, but I also need to be able to take notes and be contactable, etc. I've thought about getting a dumb phone so my wife can call me, and a notebook for thoughts. I already carry my little Ricoh GRiiiX everywhere, so that's the camera aspect sorted. More thinking needed!

      Man I feel that struggle of balance between the beneficial features a smartphone brings and the temptations.
      A few years ago I started carrying around those small Field Guide notepads in my pocket, so I could write down quick notes but then I often forgot about them, so ultimately found using the Google Tasks app better as I could then set a reminder for each note to become actionable (but that's then on my phone again haha).
      Oh man that Ricoh! I've seen that pop up a few times, love the point and shoot form factor, I carry my Sony ZV1 on holidays to stay off my phone.
      The Hisense ePaper display phones almost had me, but they don't get full Play Store app support. Just need a phone maker to create a Full Android ePaper Smartphone and that may be the answer, all the smart features but with a slow refresh black and white screen, minimal hook to get stuck on a feed.

    Cool idea. Though Silent Saturdays sounds like a better idea.
    Basically, rest the mind on Saturdays, which allow you to apply your creativity on Sundays.

    yoooo. also, i made a change at the start of christmas. i turned off notifications and deleted snapchat, and ive noticed im so much less on my phone, i also cleaned my desk

    • @camshand
      @camshand  Před 5 měsíci

      Awesome move! Notifications are the biggest difference. It's unnecessarily hard to be present with a phone begging for your attention with dings.
      Good job on the Desk, without the clutter I find it much easier to Focus, hopefully you do too!

      thinking about it i watch less short form content, like shorts reels and toktoks. i deleted the youtube app on my iphone, and downloaded brave and disabled shorts so i do not have acces to them. i also deleted tiktok as it made my life so much worse@@camshand

    Is that a quadlock phone case? I've pretty heavily invested into a quadlock ecosystem in my house and vehicles, I love how utilitarian it can be.

    • @camshand
      @camshand  Před 5 měsíci

      Yes it is, and since I've upgraded to Pixel 8 Pro I finally have QuadLock MAG, essentially Apple Magsafe on an android phone 😁 The bike mounts are great when working out, and being able to have heart rate tracking front and centre.

      @@camshand I have a similar setup for my rowing machine. I have a couple in my truck, one on my kid's stroller, and a couple conveniently placed ones around the house. I originally got into quadlock for my motorcycle, but i just kept finding more and more uses for it. I'm enjoying your content, keep it up!

    What is the name of the digital notepad used in your videos?

    • @camshand
      @camshand  Před 5 měsíci

      It's called a Supernote, I made a video about a year ago on it, however they just released a new model which I'm currently testing (shown in this video), and a new video will coming in about a months time :)

  • @Obsidianxenon
    @Obsidianxenon Před 5 měsíci

    The video is good and helpful as always but one thing. In the first part of the video it looks like your desk is bending under load? Idk if it's that or the camera lens but yeah just wondering.

    • @MikeStevens
      @MikeStevens Před 5 měsíci +2

      I think it's the lens. If you look at the vertical lines in the frame - the window, the LED tube, they're all curved too.

    • @Obsidianxenon
      @Obsidianxenon Před 5 měsíci

      @@MikeStevens Oh good I was genuinely concerned

    • @camshand
      @camshand  Před 5 měsíci

      haha oh yeah it's the lens! The Desk it okay thankfully 😁
      I prefer clean straight lines so usually shoot at about 35mm with this lens but thought I'd test out wider at 24mm and bringing the camera closer for this video given it's more of a chill chat.

    I am very curious if you are religious. Cause almost every religion i know of has a "demanded rest day" and for some reason I see more and more that successful people recommend or see as crucial things that are also given as important things in religious books. And NO this ain't another Join my religion because mine is better comment but a pls just take a look at some religions compare them and maybe you will discover that what you already believe is very close to a religion. (pls be nice in the comments)

    Glad you’ve been able to dive headfirst into content creation! I was wondering, which shortform platform has been working best for you? CZcams Shorts, Instagram Reels, or TikTok?
