I don't know about Canada but here in the US we use house security systems with all sorts of sensors and alarms. Basically if you turn the alarm on when you leave and off when you come home with an alarm. If it isn't turned off within a certain amount of time it'll go off and call the cops automatically. The main point is they'll give you a sign to put in your front door and where I live it'll drastically decrease the chances of someone breaking into your house.

I would change the flooring and kitchen cabinets. Idealy you want one single color and pattern of material as flooring. This will keep the house more modern and bigger. The kitchen cabinets are a bit dated too. I personally don't like white cabinets. They can get dirty very easily especially for us asian family due to our cooking methods. A nice cesarstone countertop would also lighten up the kitchen. I would also suggest you change the stairs guardrails and handrails as well. The current style is a bit tradition.
