Hey man, been playing a while in between ruts. So started using your exercises in my regimented practice every day for the last week, and tonight when I grabbed my guitar to jam with a buddy I haven't played with in a long time I couldn't stop watching how clean my fretting is and how smooth I was picking and it felt effortless. My friend even asked what kind of crazy stuff I'd been doing to progress so much and how long its taken. Passed along the love and hopefully he will be getting lessons from the guru now as well! Thank you so much for the knowledge and love of music you share so freely.

What a great attitude. This is how I’ve wanted guitar lessons in the metal world to be like. Actual good advice through an experience lense. Started checking this out after my own guitar journey took me from self taught to finally classical training. Now I can take my fundamentals and love of metal to improve them both. Got your lessons and enjoy these videos so much. Studying and practicing hard so I can improve my playing and get out there and play with other talented individuals. KEEP PRACTICING! :D

Oh Bernth, what have you done to the guitar community out there? :) I bet the majority of people trying your exercise have leveled up their playing skill by at least a few % and this is huge. I'm a self learner for 5 years now and only a few weeks ago I've started to focus on finger independence exercises and have to admit I should have done it from the first day. This exercise of yours is simply pure gold, one of a kind that challenges you up to a point where shredding becomes a pleasure. I would strongly recommend everyone to try it out, it's pure magic.
Later update: Bernth, I can't thank you enough for this!!! I've been doing these exercises for the past few days and I simply can't believe how my left hand has changed. I have finally unlocked my fingers, unbelievable. Can't wait to check you picking exercises, my right hand needs a tweak as well.

Dude you seriously make the best guitar learning content that I've come across thus far. I still consider myself a beginner, but it's like you're reading my mind and giving me the exact thing I need. I'm focusing heavily on just the mechanical issues I see when I play, but the way you just added in the "But you still need to be able to make it musical" at the end jew sewed so many aspects of the guitar together for me. What also helped was thinking of different musical phrase rhythms as sentences stitched guitar put me onto that one. Once I add this to my continuously developing routine and I'll put it in the Facebook group and tag you so everyone can look it over. Thanks Bernth you Fricken rock bro 🤙🌀🏄‍♂️ (edit) Komponist cuz I got to excited to comment on the video before I finished it, and you don't do that in every video so I wasn't sure if there'd be one lol

After searching and trying different techniques I stumbled across this one. I began trying this and it felt like I just couldn't do this. After really focusing and trying and failing for like 5-10 minutes I finally started noticing progress! I took lessons for about 2 years and I never learned how to properly play without my fingers flailing all over the place. I think if I practice this on a regular daily basis I will have more control over my fingers. I'm seriously considering the 10 week shredding course just based on the fact that I'm seeing results from this exercise already. Glad I found this!

I'm really looking forward to going through these exercises; I've been trying to 'tame my pinky' for a bit.
Here's another good way to see what you're pinky does: starting on low E string, use the first three fingers to do triplets (say, at frets 5, 6, 7) and move up to the high E string and back down. My pinky just spazzes and sticks way out. Uhg.
Edit: Oh, yeah, and to strenghten the pinky and ring finger, I sometime do the same thing but with the middle, ring, and pinky finger.
My exercizes aren't very inventive, like Bernth's. I guess I should think more like a Komponist, eh? 😀

Lol the way you played it @ 2:38 is pretty much how i play....when i got into guitar I had no rules, no knowledge of any "technical" things about guitar or music in general. I just was good by naturally hearing something and being able to sound it out within a few minutes and i could play it by ear. So through the years i would just play covers of my favorite parts in songs and i learned a little bit by getting into the minds of the players and some of the techniques used by them. But ive never had an experienced guitar player to watch/see how i play and tell me all the things i need to work on. But 1 thing i realize is i tend not to use the 3 finger method of playing, which i think is better for me to try and learn to help when playing solos faster and smoother because i mainly use my pointer and pinky instead of just going down the fingers in order to have better hand control and better access to the higher frets, quicker than how I play it. (Sorry if this was confusing, i tried to explain it the best way I could)

Bernth, does your thumb position on the neck change when your standing vs sitting? I have a very hard time keeping my thumb not hanging over the fretboard when standing, especially in the 15th and 17th positions. Not a problem when sitting.

    Good video
I also try these patterns while standing up. And I have a tendency to press the strings with way too effort. You're definitely on points dead center

you’re not wrong about this exercise feeling like it makes an immediate difference! it took a few tries for it to really click for me, but i can tell that it’s already informed stuff i’ve been practicing for years now.
that said, i do have one question. what is the benefit exactly of keeping to that pattern on the picking hand, the strict alternate stroke pattern? i feel i would more naturally just sweep-pick this part because it’s more economic, but it sounds to me like it’s important to you that the alternate pattern is kept to. is there a reason for that?

Hey Bernth! Your metronome sounds soooo satisfying, how do you make it sound like that? Or better, where do you find that metronome noise

I think I heard Michael Angelo Batio talking about this a couple of times. I think he calls it economy of motion. And it definitely makes one hell of a difference when it comes to dexterity and speed.

I love technicality in freestyles and solos in buildups, so when I came to know that your fingers have to be at godly levels of speed, I threw myself into this video.

I started doing this exercise without a metronome to just kinda get used to the movements, but I didn't feel like i was making much progress
The second I turned on the metronome and tried the exercise again in time with the click, my fingers instantly did exactly what i needed them to do.
Not sure if anyone else has had this experience
