2012 Volvo XC60 Folding Mirror Fix

  • This video shows how to fix a folding mirror that does not stop in the correct "open" position. Volvo's solution to this problem is to replace the entire mirror assembly, since normally this spring/pin is not serviceable. The cost is a whole new mirror housing, and at least 2h of labor. However, it is possible to fix yourself.
    Tools required:
    - Small Torx bit (I think T10?)
    - Hammer (most likely)
    - Plastic Pry Set (recommended)
    - Pointed punch, or some pointed pry tools.
    - Wire brush/Dremel
    - Lubricant of some sort
    Here is a good video showing how to remove those pesky press nuts:

    Unfortunately I did not have the sturdy pick set.

    Hi, instead of prying the cover off and risking damaging the housing clips, the Volvo VIDA procedure for accessing the repeater / blinker assembly shows to remove the mirror and then you can access the clips of the housing, minimising risk of damage. There are also other videos showing the replacement of the repeater on youtube that follow this recommened method. Just a tip for others, but thanks for showing us the way on the rest!

    We were going on a road trip through Denmark, Germany and Poland, so there were problems with the right mirror and it is very important with good mirrors that work when driving on the highways.
    I repaired the mirror after watching your video, and now the mirror works again. Thank you so much for saving our holiday.

    Want to add the positive comments here - as a retired mechanical engineer but new to the XC60 ranks, I absolutely flipped my shit when a young teenager dragged my mirror right round in a carpark and the mirror began to behave as you describe - this fix albeit damages the plastic a little removing the clamp washer was spot on for the cause & repair - top tip, order spare M12 clamp washers as mine is currently still orbiting earth as it pinged off 😂😂 - had a few spares fortunately else I would have been using some choice language!!! - saved £250 in the UK on a replacement mirror housing - many thanks!!!
    Also found a household picture tack was strong enough and the right size to tap out the seized pin without drilling 😉👍

    If someone has problems to reuse this stupid press-nut, you might try your local lawnmower repair service. These pressnuts are quite often used on them to fixate the plastic wheels on the axle.

    Great video, I am 75% through doing the repair on a 2013 XC60. Went exactly as you described. I used a 1/16" drill bit to enlarge the hole behind the pin and push it out and a larger bit to clean the hole out. Used synthetic oil after to lube pin. I will use anti-seize to cover the main pivot point. Headed to hardware store to get replacement motor screws and hopefully that silly spring clip which got quite mangled. Thank you very much for post this and saving me big money!!

    great video - thanks. Never could have figured it out on my own. Couple of adds:
    Good idea to use electronic cleaner on the connections/motor while you have it open
    The offending pin is slotted - make sure slot is down when you re-assemble
    When you take off the bottom black motor housing keep motor upside-down so the gear doesn't fall out... the tiny little axle housings will fall out and bounce around....
    use a lubricating oil not a penetrating oil for this one.

  • @shaanp774
    @shaanp774 Před 2 lety +2

    Thanks for the video, very helpful, it helped me fix the issue on BOTH mirrors on my XC60. Also, I did manage to find the right sized press-nut (or "push on washer") on Amazon! I had to buy a 280 piece pack of them, but it came with 20 of the large size which fit the XC60 perfectly!
    When I first repaired the driver side, the old press nut wouldn't fit tightly enough. As a result, when the mirror would retract you would hear the motor continuing to run, and the small "stop spring" clicking away. It would eventually stop running after about 30 seconds. As soon as I used a NEW press-nut, it held the main spring firmly enough and fixed the issue. I also replaced the rusted torx screws while I was at it. They were very difficult to unscrew, the torx head was completely stripped. I ended up cutting a small slot in the head with a Dremel and unscrewing with a flat head.
    I find it ridiculous that the dealer solution is to simply replace the entire unit. This is so unnecessary and very wasteful. I would have hoped a company like Volvo would be a little more environmentally responsible in 2021.
    Thanks.

  • @JonathanStein
    @JonathanStein Před rokem +3

    I was able to fix this problem without disassembling or replacing the mirror. It was your first video showing the internals of the assembly that helped me figure this solution out, so thanks for doing the dirty work and for posting your helpful videos!
    My passenger-side mirror was unfolding to a hyper-extended position, well past the normal stop position, but fixing it was pretty easy. Since first fixing it, I rhave been able to reproduce the problem by manually over-extending the mirror from the normal open position (as if someone had bumped it in a parking lot while unfolded) then using the motor fully retract the mirror without manually pulling it back into normal position first. In this state, I think the motor drive is engaged with the breakaway ring, so it drives entirely in the breakaway position allowing full range of motion past the normal stop. The key to fixing this is to get the motor to disengage from the breakaway ring.
    If your mirror is over-extending, start with the mirror folded in, then unlock the vehicle to start it unfolding. As it reaches the normal position, give the mirror a gentle shove inward. Do it quickly, and the motor's current limiter will not stop the motor, and the motor will continue running freely while you hold the mirror in the normal position. After a few seconds, you will hear a loud click and the motor will stop. Ensure the mirror is securely in the normal unfolded position by giving it a gentle wiggle and it should stay in place. Then lock and unlock the vehicle to fold and unfold the mirrors. Everything should work well from then on.
    Hope this works for anyone else with this problem! I've posted a video of the fix here czcams.com/video/TKEe7RQq_8E/video.html

    Excellent video, followed the steps and repaired the sticky pin. Problem solved. I had purchased a bag of 10 press nuts ahead of time, and they worked perfectly. Removing the push nut is the biggest PIA of the entire procedure, unless there is a tool I can't imagine getting it out intact. And just like the video, once the press nut is removed the spring and notched spacer will fly into the air. P/N on the bag of push nuts is 4f-07T-07C-Z-02L-06P. Hope this helps.

      @@cameronbreiter5826 It was a pain in the ass, very delicate job. I had to pull the cables a bit to get more space to work with, cut the affected wires were they had rubbed off, peel off a bit of the wire's casing, add some shrinking tube and then proceed so solder the wires. Then move the heat shriking tube over the solder and make it shrink.
      My tip, use electrical tape to cover the solder, because the heat from the solder iron will make the heat shrinking tube shrink and it'll be very difficult to move it over the solders.

    hi my 2008 s40 has a folding mirror issue. the passenger side mirror folds most of the times but rarely unfolds. the motor is working because when every time the mirror folds you can hear the motor working. When the mirror doesnt unfold the motor is quiet like its not working or not getting power. Other times when both mirrors are unfolded and i try to fold them the driver side folds normally . the passenger side motor though starts working immediately but for the first few seconds the mirror doesnt fold. 3 seconds latter theres a big POP sound like something broke and the mirror folds properly. This started happening when another car hit my passenger side mirror slightly while my car was parked. But i dont think it broke something on the inside as sometimes it works fine. its more like something slipped out of place. do you have any ideas????

      I think it may be called a "push nut" rather than "press nut" as per McMaster Carr:

    Fixed my mirror couple days ago on the same way. But I guess I reassembled it wrong, cause now one mirror turns out while the other turns in. Can someone give me an advice, what I should change to make it work?

      Are you sure you plugged the motor in the same way? I suppose if you plug it in backwards, it may spin the wrong way.

      @@ncnmra5882 thanks for your answer, what do mean exactly with plugging in the motor backwards? Isn't there only one possibility to put the motor in the mirror?

    • @ncnmra5882

      @@benediktl.6074 No, I mean the electrical connection to the motor. Check out 6:28 on the video. I popped off the connector there. I would presume that if you plugged that connector in backwards (if I recall, it isn't polarized, so it may be possible to do so), then the motor would run backwards.

    Any ideea why the whole housing of the mirror would be shaking?

    • @ncnmra5882
      @ncnmra5882  Před 5 lety

      Do you mean after the fix? I would guess either the press nut isn't tight enough, or the clips on the housing are loose?

    • @alinplop7814
      @alinplop7814 Před 5 lety

      Yep. The whole mirror is a lil bit loose and wobbly.

    • @ncnmra5882
      @ncnmra5882  Před 5 lety

      Did you make sure to push the press nut down far enough? The spring needs to be compressed as that is what keeps the housing pressed against the base. If you didn't compress it enough, or if it loosened it would certainly flop around.

      I broke the push washer on my driver side...Just be careful when twisting the fins up to remove it. I used a few sizes curved picks to do it but just too much force.
