I hate when people say this shit. You do realize if he never "made it popular" Someone else would. Also usually discoveries like this are multi-discoveries. 1 person doesn't just invent it up. Usually colleagues or people around the world that had nothing to do with him were doing it too. He most likely brought it to the mainstream.

When he says "it's kinda like a train", it's an understatement. Leaves you at a loss for words cuz he seems to have added a chapter to the meaning of the subject of music and what's possible. If I just listen to Sly songs, I'd never have understood what's actually hitting me, much less exactly the recipe of the punch. I love how he emphasizes that he wasn't trying or wanting to play bass.
The name Graham should be taught along with the greats of history. His accidental (?) discovery of bass rhythm is perhaps comparable to the invention of counterpoint in classical music, and has underscored a common sound track for a couple of generations of humans across the planet.

+rired2005 It seems now like a lot of artists of his generation were ahead of their time in part because they thought the world could be changed with the tools of artistic discovery and that gave impetus to pushing the envelope. As this was true of Graham and Hendrix it was likewise true of James Brown and many others who glimpsed a broader horizon and became explorers. The imagination was given permission to assert itself. At some deeper level following MLK's I Have A Dream speech there was an assertion of political vision for a time as well. Maybe the two were connected.

This presentation was fun for me. I recall the age of many of his songs and did not realize who he was or anything specific about the man. My respect for his love with his wife and beautiful young daughter. His sense of humor is optimal, as well. When someone is giving guidance and showing techniques, the metaphor of providing examples is essential and he had that down well. In academic graduate work, you must be so precise. With Mr. Graham, I was at ease having played the bass in high school as a kid. Never professional and actually stopped being a player after high school and became a seeker of further information about the musicians that compelled me to feel good. I titled this with my youngest daughter's name and birthday.

@Stevie Wolfe The worst part about the concept of thumb period is that it implies your thumb can get pregnant.

Yo, I never, ever get tired of watching this video, especially at 17:00. This groove is contagious. He is the Grand Majarasha of it all! The most inspirational video on bass I ever seen! And I am a guitar player. Makes me what to take up the Bass. Thank you for posting this. Whoever disliked this video has no soul. This is great. Stay safe out there.

Wow! I actually owned a Roland jet phaser back in the 80's. My friend borrowed it, end of story. What a monster Larry is! He's as cool as Frank Zappa and Jimi. Pretty obvious where Claypool came from. But much sillier. Larry is a scary dude!!

I've only been playing bass for only a year, normally these kind of videos from the pro's are so overwhelming, but he is having so much fun, he makes it seem so "light". He calms my anxieties, and makes me feel like "its ok, everything's ganna be ok", moral of the story here; just have fun, and learn, but have funnnn.
