I can relate to that feeling, 100%. "Eating plant-based" is much less controversial than "vegan." However, I believe that vegans should do their best to embrace the title and change stereotypes. Hey, that's just me. You do you, thanks for being nice to animals

    • @Bloxeh
      @Bloxeh Před 7 měsíci +8

Yeah, I think the general missing knowledge, about what veganism actually is, doesn't help. The industry picked up "vegan" and do whatever they want with it and now it's confused with a diet.

@@hannahmitchell87 Yes, absolutely. And sometimes even the push back from vegans. First time I was at an outreach event some "veterans activists" were not really nice to me. I didn't feel welcome and didn't go a second time. I get that they were passionate and are probably frustrated with others, but it doesn't help. I think we need to stay approachable and relateable and very patient. Easier said than done :).

Vegan is a philosophy, so I identify as Whole Food Plant Based, although I will use the word 'vegan' at times because most of the people I know relate that to diet, not the philosophy. 😊

Vegan influencers (from the Doctors to the nutritionists) have purposely replaced and conflated the word vegan to describe a diet devoid of animal products with the words plant based. Why? Because then the whole argument about what is an adequate and relatively healthy diet gets muddied, and the literal vegan diet can be interchangeable with other diets which contain animal products which are still plant based. Thereby benefitting the vegan cause and its flawed arguments.
Case in point are the "blue zones" which have been used endlessly by the vegan community to support the notion that humans not only survive but thrive on a vegan diet. True, I have never heard someone suggest that these blue zones are vegan. But what they do strongly suggest is that the reason they are so long lived is due to their (according to them), extremely high intake of plant foods and the extremely low intake of animal foods.
Which is entirely not the case in ANY of the blue zones. In Okinawa, both pre WW2 and post WW2, they consume large amounts of pork daily. Since WW2 specifically it is a highly processed pork in the form of a "SPAM". Yet, centenarians persist. The same is for Sardinia where poultry, meat and seafoods are a consumed in small amount on a daily basis.

Been vegan 30yrs and when I first went vego a few years before that to try it out, expecting I might get sick emaciated and perhaps die- nothing happened. So that was a revelation! No way in hell would you go vegan back then for health as all the info around was you need meat etc or you'll probably shrivel up and die. Now 30yrs on I'm an above average cyclist(4w'kg)who works a physical job. Have good health and good blood markers my Dr etc always comments on- and yes due to genetics I have lots of hair- thanks Dad. But in my own life with my own vegan family of 5(well one is vego) its just an everyday thing. Its just food and of course one wouldn't eat animals if you didn't need to, why would you? And I think nothing much about it. Only when I go out or socialise does it suddenly become an issue, and its like oh shit I hope they've got some- any vegan options. And yes 75% of people treat you differently when they find out you're vegan. Which is de-humanising and annoying. You are not a person anymore you're a "vegan". Cue all the usual comments. Now its even worse with all the hysteria around veganism. Stoked up on social media mainly because if too many people went vegan certain industries would lose truckloads of revenue imo. The amount of fear mongering BS, and just made up nonsense is astounding. If going vegan eat lots of variety and good quality food and some junk food when u feel like it from time to time (you don't need to be perfect). Make sure you're eating enough calories(very important). Get out and exercise, get some sunlight, and take a B12 supplement. Easy.

When living by myself when younger didn't buy red meat , never really thought why , knew i didn't need it , So normally go with flow of those I with - if my GF is vegetarian I will go veggie etc. If went stricter then some swiss cheese as like it , the odd egg, yogurt /kefir and maybe shellfish as probably less brains than mosquitos or flies I kill - but understand why people wouldn't eat them as opposed to killing flies . but people are funny , some only eat roadkill . I am meat free although I do not follow a vegan diet. 20 years or so ago when I started I would simply tell people' I do not eat meat', which would lead to 'oh so you're a vegetarian?', 'no but I don't eat meat'. That led me to realize pretty quickly that simply telling people I am vegetarian saved me from the conundrum that he is describing in daily social settings. I "went vegan" years ago, to verify some of the "miracle claims". As far as "saving animals" went, well, sure--but at the end of the day, it was only about one animal--me. Long story short, after three months I had dropped over ten kilos, was off my blood pressure meds, and felt great.
I joined the local vegetarian society, but soon realized they were more about animal rights than human health (many of them consumed "vegan" processed gunk, that I wouldn't go near).
I've fallen off the wagon several times (and yes I felt sick, and was ill), and climbed back on. A few years later, I discovered "WFPB" (whole food, plant-based) which made things even simpler. So now I'm back on it hopefully for a while. And I only use the term "vegan" when pressed, since I don't consider myself part of what unfortunately has become a political movement.
So, I just happily, healthfully, eat my plants. If anyone wants to know the hows, whys, and whats I'll gladly tell my story--but I don't preach, and I certainly don't get in anyone's face about wearing leather shoes etc.

It was later picked up by industry and understood as a diet, which it never was. A plant based diet is just part of being vegan.
I think it's important, that it is political, because we urgently need to do better for the animals. What's done to them is atrocious.

The reason we don't eat meat during most fasts (a few allow fish) is because it's an ascetic practice of doing without the body's desires and base pleasures and prioritising higher things. So we cut out oil and wine too and we try to eat only the minimum requirement to fuel ourselves. And at the same time we try to pray more, give more to the poor, especially given the money we save by not buying food, and whatever other spiritual progress might apply individually.

If I am at an animal rights rally and they ask me hoe long i am vegan I will just answer.. not make a big deal about it..
Do you have it tatood on your neck like Joey carbstrong? No worries

@@MarkLewisfitness All due respect. I'm not a sausage provider (!?), that was a tongue-between-cheeks comment. It's honestly impressive to me that you've been able to maintain your physique on what many would call a vegan diet. Most vegans I know (and of course, I know who they are, they tell me) are wastrels who have more ideas about morals than actual nutrition. You might start a side-channel about how to maintain a decent nutritional balance with a similar fussiness... idk... It wouldn't be for me but I'd feel a lot better about my friends choosing that lifestyle if I could be reassured they wouldn't starve to death in the next 5y.

@@helencaleb2188 Just live in a highly populated area. By your approach I'm guessing you're salty about me assuming I'd find them everywhere whereas you, a vegan (maybe???) doesn't see so many? I dunno.. I have known many, and all the white (western) ones were clinically malnourished. All the Indian ones were overweight. Definitely an international travel bias going on, here, but India has a very strong tradition of veganism, but people who can afford to travel internationally can also afford to eat tons of carbs and fats. The result is not necessarily as healthy as one might have hoped.

There are three things, which are among the dumbest things I've ever heard someone say about fruits and vegetables:
    1) Apples are basically candy. (clearly knows *nothing* about nutrition)
    2) I don't need to eat vegetables, the animals I eat eat vegetables, so I get the nutrients from that.
    3) Fruits and vegetables are bad for you.

Can’t run? Run and walk between lamp posts until you can run.
Gravel bike makes more sense than the Cervelo P3X, so buy one.

I had no idea you were vegan, watch your content for the other stuff you do very well. I find it amazing the number of endurance athletes that are vegan and are at the top of their game. What sets you apart from them is you do much more than simple endurance and would assume you have a much higher protein requirement. Makes me wonder what would be if I could choose to drop the bacon. Maybe science has it wrong.

There are fantastic plant based foods with a good protein profile. After all that's where protein comes from :).
I think where a plant based diet really shines is fiber. Animal products, and often processed foods, have no fiber. In the USA, for example, more than 95% of the population don't get their minimum requirements in fiber and it's set really low. It's so important for gut health though.

Great video Mark - I can completely relate to this as someone who has spent most of my adult life as a vegan or vegetarian. I think people are foolishly dogmatic about whatever they're into. As if you can't consider yourself a "healthy" person while still enjoying occasional junk food in appropriate quantities. In my case, I eat a vegetarian diet consisting of 90% plant foods, but will eat fish on special occasions. Trying to explain my diet with blunt "V" pronouns comes with a variety of unsavory cultural connnotations so I've stopped using them. I just tell people I prefer not to eat meat or that I'm "plant-based." Perhaps I'll adopt "fussy" as well!

It’s pretty simple. It’s the cleaner energy. If we go into the topic of hormones we have tons of evidence showing that plant based helps sustain the hormones as opposed to meat eating. Trying to sit in the middle and respecting everyone’s preferences is easy. Standing on your own is easier once you’re not focused on building your content around people pleasing.

  • @better_than_nothing

Plant-based diets are perfectly fine as long as you're properly supplementing. B12, iron, Omega-3, calcium, vitamin k, iodine, and zinc are basically non-existent in plants. You'll need supplements to make up for these. On the other hand, one can live on an all-meat diet with zero supplements and be extraordinarily healthy while doing it. Neither is right, neither is wrong, you just have to find what works for you. I applaud you Mark for your dedication to your health and I'm glad you've found something that works for both your body and your conscience. You're a great inspiration to many people.

I think some of us older “fussy” eaters have learned temperance in our attitudes to food - just like most other things. None of my family (spouse/child or parents/siblings) are “fussy”, but after many years, they seem to have accepted it. I think running a 50k for my 40th birthday last year forever ended the discussion about the health impacts of my diet. 😂

I trully think the worst enemy of veganism are vegans , you're never ''vegan'' enough , they only go to vegan restaurants vegan campout with vegan people etc. Some were heavy meat eaters for 30 years and after 2 weeks of becoming vegan they call everyone else a killer or rapist etc.

These people evaded every attempt for bettering themselves to their own detriment - we can only help them out till they get upset and kick us out of their life.
