  • This is game 9 from the 1954 World Chess Championship match between Vasily Smyslov, challenger, and Mikhail Botvinnik, champion.
The French Defense was present in several of their games in this match. Botvinnik plays the Winawer variation in this one, and elects to maintain the pin once questioned with 5.a3. Smyslov's reply is quick to highlight the vulnerable weak dark squares in Botvinnik's camp.

Once upon a time, I gave up chess coz I felt inferior not knowing the theory. But after Jerry explained the positional play by these masters and demonstrated much of it himself in many of his games, chess is much easier to play. So, thank you, Jerry 😍

It's an interesting video. I play the winawer with black and even today in the main line after 8.Qxg7 Rg8 9.Qxh7 this bloody
h-pawn can cause a great deal of problems. I love those kind of positions because on one side you have Harry the h-pawn who's running like it's the Olympics and on the other side you have some queenside initiative and can get to the king.

Hi Jerry, thanks for the video.. I have a question for you: I've noticed, you often analyse (greatly!) rather old games: is that because in the last 10-20 years it's harder (or impossible) to find a 25 moves game between GMs that isn't a boring draw? Nowadays people like Carlsen, Fabiano, Vishi, Hikaru, MVO, Liren, Karjakin etc... in longer games would never commit an mistake or a blunder. Is that right? Cheers

Fantastic speed, in this game. Very quick and drastic changes.
A quick question: I wanted to know if on the move 7 (at 1:26) it is possible to advance the pawn b4 to b3. I get the feeling that this would have maybe made for a slower game, more position control-oriented (as it feels like he might have liked it), but I haven't played a single game since 15 so I'm no expert.
I tried giving the position of the move 7 to a chess engine (Stockfish 11), and it did actually recomment b4b3, so I wanted to know your insight about it. (Used the nextchessmove . com website.)

After Ng6, black's knight is tied down to defense of the rook. White could play Bd3, threatening to take the knight, then the rook. The only way to get out of that is to play Rf8, but then the h pawn is hanging, Bh6 is coming, and it's pretty unpleasant for black.
