I love how Steve credits Dave as a mentor, because behind all that glam and craziness, Dave really seemed very serious about his craft.
I'm 52 years old watching the years slipping away and I remember everything about that time. I loved the music, the vibe and everything about the 80s. I miss that time period so much and wish I could go back and do it all over again.
Almost 47 and agree 100%. As Eddie Money said, “I wanna go back and do it all over.”
Yeah, and us kids back then listened to this on vinyl or cassette tapes, we had social lives with actual people, and we read books sometimes too. Times have changed.
I had a '67 Camaro in the late 80's. Nothing beat driving around listening to classic VH or solo Dave.
I say this with the utmost conviction; Eat 'Em And Smile is the THE most grossly under appreciated rock album of the 1980s. It's an absolute masterpiece.
Have always liked Vai's playing and his music but will love him forever for the way he treated my 10-year old son when we met him. Best guy ever!
I met Steve when I was around 11 years old and he had been my idol since I was 8. He was INCREDIBLY nice and very grateful. Awesome guy.
Steve is a very generous and great person. He makes time for people. I remember meeting him at an after party show and there was a guy there that brought Steve a recording of his music. Steve actually took the time to give him notes, critiques, compliments, suggestions. My cousin and I, who both play guitar, were amazed! Think about it. He had a full day already. Press, meet and greets, planning, sound check, then a two hour show, and after all that, still made the time to give this person all of his attention for what seemed like 10-15 minutes straight. That is a class act individual.
Steve Vai gives credit to the band when asked about his solo. Humble and wise.
loved his quote..."Guitar is a hard instrument for me to play...so I practice all the time..."...classic...only Satriani could touch this guy...and if he wasnt busy with Mick Jaggers solo tour in 1986...I wonder what that would have been like?
It'd be good enough if Vai actually did like Roth, like he seems to be saying he did. But if Roth drove him crazy but he's too classy to say so, then Vai is a truly special dude.
Frank Zappa was a superb guitarist but even he raved about how special Steve Vai is.
I grew up in the 80s and was an avid guitar player who idolized Satriani and Eddie but never gave Vai his due. Later in life, watching these interviews, I'm struck by how nice and humble he is, like Satch. Really makes idolizing them that much easier.
This was one of the greatest all time rock line ups. I saw them play live on the Eat em and Smile tour on Long Island Nassau Coliseum and it was epic in all sense of the word. David Lee Roth was at the top of his game. This band was so on point and everyone in that band was at the top of their games as well. Steve Vai killed it. He is not only one of the best rock guitarist on the planet but man can he put on a performance. Billy Sheehan was the same way. You literally didn’t know who to look at cause they were all front men. It’s was on 11. One of the best rock shows I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot of them. What a party!!!!
I wish Roth and Vai had stuck together longer.
@@roaringlion1 It was in an interview from back in the day and Vai was very polite and professional about it, but it came down to David Lee Roth was "always on" and was an intense and demanding guy from an image and performance point of view. He was always looking for the "next hook" and that can be exhausting after a while. If you ever watch an interview with Roth from back then, it's like a chihuahua on cocaine. His mind was always bouncing from joke to idea to poem to bumper sticker quotes. That's fun being around that in doses, but it drains people after a couple years.
@@roaringlion1 Roth is the same “ROCK STAR” off stage that he is on stage, and that’s impossible to live with. We loved Appetite For Destruction partly because of Axl’s raw delivery which seemed to be fueling off anger... only to find out it truly WAS anger and it was destroying him from inside. Nirvana’s songs about depression and despair all of a sudden became REAL when Cobain ended his own life. All great artists are convincing during their performances, but some artists aren’t ‘performing’ at all; they really ARE what they seem to be.
Greg Bisonette definitely does not get enough credit for how good of a drummer he is
Greg Bisonette is an awesome drummer however he was drowned out by the likes of Alex Van Halen & Tommy Lee with his upside spinning drum kit at the time. Greg's interview here on youtube on how he got the drum gig is quite the story. czcams.com/video/Ui-QABXVcTc/video.html
I've been drumming for 50+ years took a couple of years lessons as a kid, Greg is very, very good indeed!!
...well he has been working steadily since this album came out. So I'd say he does get PLENTY of credit.
I absolutely agree. Check him out on the Endless Summer II soundtrack with Gary Hoey. That's another underrated musician too.
What a classic track . Even today Yankee Rose still sounds fresh.
Don’t get to hear Steve talk about the Roth days nearly enough. Great stuff.
Legendary Album, one of the greatest supergroups of the 80's!
You can still crank that song today and it still sounds AMAZING 🤘🏻
Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan was the GREATEST guitar and bass combos of all time.
To this day...The DLR 1986 Tour was the best concert I've ever been to (Brendan Byrne Arena -Long Island NY)...and I've been to many rock concerts from mid 70s to the present.
One of the greatest albums ever! Brilliant. NEEDS REMASTERING!
My favorite late 80s albums "Eat em & Smile" and "Skyscraper" seen both tours those were "Damn Good Times!"
Seen eat em and smile tour with Cinderella at glens falls civic center and it was a great show , show was loaded with chicks
I STILL remember when that song/record came out, if memory serves Yankee Rose was released right around July 4th 1986 and it ROCKED!. That song came ripping out of the speakers for the rest of that summer, fun times.
I still remember the first time seeing that video come on on MTV. OMG what an ear and eye opener. Especially for an 11 year old.
I skipped school to go to that concert. First road trip with my best friends
It was an awesome concert !
DLR with Vai, Billy and Greg were one of the best, tightest bands in music history. They were incredible live and in the studio. Wished it could’ve lasted longer than just 2 records.
Dave riding the giant surfboard over the sold out coliseum on the Skyscraper tour was awesome! Sure am glad I grew up when I did. Kids nowadays have no idea what real music is, as everything these days is autotunes, and overproduced. Yup, sure am glad my childhood was spent listening to the greatness of VH, and so many other awesome and super talented bands. Like them or not, they were really playing their instruments, not just grabbing samples like they do today. Thank you Eddie, Dave, and of course Steve Vai for setting the bar so high. No decade comes close to the greatness of the 80's, so much talent, so much great music! Man, those were the days! RIP Eddie, the best to ever pick up a guitar 🎸!
The whole Eat em and Smile album was the best of the best..🔥🎸🔥
Their version of Tobacco Road will always be one of my favorite examples of rockin rapin roll
Unashamed patriotism, it always brings a tear to the eye. Thanks Stevie!
One of the BEST concerts I've ever been to in my entire life. I wasn't even a huge DLR fan, just excited to see him with another amazing guitarist. But, it was pure entertainment.
That video was a great example of 2 POWERFUL entities lighting up in the stage with such intensity that you never knew where to look! Shout out to the video director for giving the precisely right flesh to that track and making the song become a visual experience. Shout out to the team in the studio, for creating a sound and vibe that, even today, blows people away. HUGE fan of both Diamond Dave and the great Mr. Vai!
I have a copy of this on vinyl signed by Steve Vai.
I was SO bummed when Roth and VH split....but then Eat Em and Smile came out and I saw endless, ENDLESS possibilities. The band was MORE than able to play note for note with the guys from VH so I saw a bright future for David Lee Roth and the boys, but it never really came to be. I love the whole Eat Em and Smile album, bought it when it was released and still listen to it today with Shyboy and Yankee Rose being total stand outs. Great release and one that dozens t get enough cred for was it was and is.
Ladies night in Buffalo Guitar solo is just silky smooth. That's my stand out song. Love that album
I feel that Vai's best work is with David Lee Roth. ☝
I think it's because Dave gave him the freedom to do as he wants. create, expand, etc. we got blessed with the results.
Listen to For The Love Of God, dude. Come back to me when you're done crying after listening to it. Its powerful...
great song. Kind of sad too.... It is powerful composition but not enough soul. Its just a long composition highlighting his talents however, my opinion is the DLR albums with Vai are more upbeat songs and plus billy sheehan is playing everything Vai is. And greg on drum doing those beats.... WOW So for me its better than long soloing that makes a person cry. I prefer upbeats. ☝
Yankee Rose blew me away. Of course, Skyscraper was just from another awesome planet. I still listen to it regularly.
Damn he's amazing, yet humble, he just gave alot of praise to his fellow artists, gotta love this dude
That first incarnation of DLR’s Band was probably one of the best bands of the 80s....I wish they could have pulled off the reunion a few years ago
More like 25 years ago - Dave's voice has been pretty much gone since the late 90's.
He never was a good singer how the hell you going to have a reunion when he can't sing
@@stevejohnson1397 I wouldn't be going for Diamond Dave....I would be going to see Steve Vai,Billy Sheehan and Greg Bissonette all play together for the first time in over 30 years......If Dave wants to dance around during it thats fine to.......
@@jmissle
If Dave wants to dance around? Sounds disturbingly similar to something Hagar said about the Sam & Dave tour.
I LOOOOOOOOVE THE YANKEE ROSE!!!!! Diamond Dave made the absolute best videos in the 80's, hands down. Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher, California Girls, Just a Gigolo, Yankee Rose, Going Crazy, Just Like Paradise.....AMAZING CATALOG! I swear, Yankee Rose is the Greatest Hard Rock Independence Day song ever made!!!
Did you mean Pete Angelus? He's the guy who was co-creator and director to all these videos. Both he, and Dave a F'n Geniuses if you ask me. MtV got lucky with these video gems, no doubt!
What a nice guy, humble, talented and gracious.
Remember learning this tune like it was yesterday.....my heart was beating so fast, and everytime our cover band would play I was always looking forward to when Yankee Rose was in the set.!!!! Vai really was/is a horse of a different color! LEGEND
Such an amazing kick ass song! David Lee Roth released such a rocking album!
This album changed everything for me. Steve is still and always will be my favorite guitar player. Never saw the DLR band live, a reunion would be a dream come true. I've seen a million Vai interviews but The Professor just knows how to ask the right questions and get to what people really want to hear, many thanks for that...
Saw Van Hagar on Halloween '86 & a few months later DLR w/ Vai...guess which show blew the other away?
Of all guitars that interview, I enjoy Stevie Via most. He shares so much, not just about making music, but also the business. He communicates extremely well and very insightful.
Yankee Rose is one of my all time favorite songs from the eighties. Steve's guitar and Billy's base line blew me away as a kid. Eat em and smile was the best show I ever saw !
This was a freaking awesome breakdown. I was there to buy the album the day it came out. I was told I had to wait a month to buy the CD because back then they didn't come out right away. When I saw this video I was like how can he come up with something as good as if not better as Van Halen. Everyone in this group is f'n incredible!
the EEAS tour might be the greatest concert ive ever been to
Great song from a Great album. Dave and the musicians on it are "creme de la creme" - the finest in the business.
I Love it.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a humble guy! Guitar God shooting credit to everyone else. Namaste
I got to see Steve Vai and Joe Satriani live on their UK tour back in 1997 with my Dad, At the time I never realised how special that night would become.
Steve Vai is one of the classiest musicians you will ever see in an interview. He's as cool as he is talented!
this album CHANGED THE WAY I HEARD MUSIC. THANK YOU.
There will never be another ( Steve Vai ) am so thankful to have seen him preform live…..( twice )…..legendary 🎸
Got to see them on that tour at the L.A. Forum, one of the best shows ever and I'm the old fart that's seen them all 🤣 What a great rock band. Over the top playing, incredible stage presence/showmanship and the best frontman in the business! They were all having great time!
80's arena rock...nothing in live music will ever come close to matching that level of energy👍
Couldn't hear Yankee Rose enough when it came out. The energy and attitude of the song and video are insane! Especially the bass interlude on through to the fade out.
Absolutely LOVED that song when it was released.. as a young teen guitarist myself at the time THIS song was pure GOLD 🎸. This song was when I discovered Steve Vai and was a super fan from then on and learned alot of playing from watching Steve from there on.. was just introducing Steve to my boys again today. Steve is the GOAT of guitarists. And I've followed then all 😎👍
Awesome, I was just spinning Roth's Skyscraper vinyl, yesterday, to test out a vintage Pioneer turntable that I picked up. Seeing Steve Vai in Crossroads was a big influence on me to pick up guitar. Vai's work with Roth is definitely, underrated.
I think the songs with Dave are his best work. Steve seems like a nice guy. Also he's very respectful about Dave.
Really? I thought a lot of people learned about Steve Vai through David Lee Roth
This interview, it shows exactly why Steve Vai is a legend, it isn't about him, it is about them. If more bands thought this way, they wouldn't break up.
Steve Vai in Crossroads and this album is why I started playing guitar! And one of the top 5 live shows and SOUND i've ever scene. I'd love to meet the guy and say thank you !
Eat em and smile and Yankee Rose was the summer time soundtrack Of my 19th year of life! Greatest year, with the greatest music thanks to Dave and Steve, Billy Greg!!! In True Diamond Dave fashion, Eat em and smile was the hit of 1986 blasted it all summer long!!
Dittos dudes, that cassette was in my car deck non stop.80s... Such a great time!!
I was about 17. I am 51, soon to be 52 in Dec. Seen that concert along with the Skyscraper Tour. Total in your face rocking!
Man, I’d like to see a DLR reunion tour of the Eat’em and Smile lineup. I heard that they were suppose to or did do a little gig here in LA at Lucky Strikes bowling alley, which sounds so David Lee Roth to do. But I think it got canceled last minute. I’m not sure about that...Yankee Rose is still one of my favorite songs. What a fun as song.
Steve is such a humble, and down-to-earth type of guy. I have the utmost respect for him. 👍
Always thought "Yankee Rose" a great song.
Greater today as it captures the celebration of America. Thank you Steve Vai!!
Eat em and smile is a great album
I was a teen when Yankee Rose was top-40. The combination of Steve on guitar and Billy on bass is what really impressed me with the song. Steve and Billy are still two of my all time favorite guitar and bass players.
The first time I saw Steve was in a movie called Crossroads with Ralph Macchio as a wannabe "bluesman". Steve was so amazing. 💖💖💖💖💖 I don't know how many times I watched that movie because of him.
Wow! Steve Vai...this man musically can do no wrong In MY eyes. One of the very few. I've been around awhile, pushing 60, and he has not disappointed me yet! 😊
The Vai's Guitar style Is Amazing! Talking guitars Is funny staff but hard to play. My favorite Vai's solo in DLR band Is Ladies night in Buffalo! It blows me away! 20 years ago I ranked 7th in a "play with Steve Vai" Guitar staff, I was happy to see him live and make a photo with him! High octane Guitar staff my friend! Thank U 4 the Video!
Vai created inovational guitar world in RockMusic No like ever.
Eatem and Smile is epochmaiking of Rock for me.
Another good solo is "hot dog and shake" from Skyscraper album, the long screaming bending is very hard to do but very rock attitude oriented e then Vai starts with armonized sequenze of notes, maybe ain't the best song of the album, ma the solo is a little masterpiece (fro me of course!)
One of my favorite DLR songs!
I did a radio show in the 80s in California at KSAK at Mt San Antonio Community college. Yankee Rose was the opening song for my show every Friday and Saturday nights. That song got me so fucking hyped for the show that it was hard to come down afterwards. Love that song and always will.
Vai seriously seems like one of the coolest dudes ever in rock.
I was a HUGE VH fan and I remember when Dave left VH and I thought, "who could he ever get to play the guitar as good as Eddie." Then I read in a magazine the name Steve Vai. Just before the album came out I bought a magazine that had a flexible record included which had Steve Vai playing "Flexible" I was sold right then and there.
I love Vai! The stars aligned for this man. Mentored by Satriani, protege of Frank Zappa. The ability to Express himself, is like no other. Amazing!
Ladies nite in Buffalo, what a track and what a lead break 🎸💜🎸
What a great story! They all were getting along and contributing to create and give to us a fantastic rock song. This is probably more unusual than it sounds. Everyone getting along and contributing in a popular rock band ( everyone )
Saw them on that tour..seen so many shows through the years still one of my favorites
That was a great era in rock in general. But such an iconic 80's song! Great band too.
I love watching Steve Vai play. He just made it look so easy and sexy as hell! I was probably the only person rooting for him to win against the Karate Kid in Crossroads!
I saw Dave and Steve on that Eat Em and Smile tour. It was my first real concert...if you don't count Barbara Mandrell and Hall and Oates
DLR 's band for this album is legendary: absolutely incredible stuff-when I heard it the first time it blew me away .In the video for this song Professors Vai and Sheehan were fantastic, the drummer was so good, he could have probably played upside-down, while Dave-sensei was doing his onstage music dojo moves.Nobody does stuff like this anymore.
I first heard Yankee Rose when I was in elementary school, and have loved it every since. I think that Steve’s guitar solo and the banter back and forth with David at the beginning of the song was an excellent move that completely paid off. Very Roth like with the doing things out of the box. That makes it more refreshing not so cookie cuterish if you will. Definitely two of the greats.
One of my favorite guitar solos of all time is from Big Trouble. Badass song and recording in total.
GTA Vice City is one of my biggest influences in music.
I got to know:
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Motley Crue
David Lee Roth
Megadeth
All through that one game.
Yesss, that's the game that got me into rock n' roll! V-Rock!
And then San Andreas hit and introduced me to Guns N' Roses.
Seen Steve and Dave during the Skyscraper tour with Poison back in 86 I think in Savannah, GA. Good times.
Eat em and smile came out in 86, how could that have been the skyscraper tour?
I've loved Steve Vai for 3 decades now. It seems just like yesterday.
Favorite rock song of the 80's. Roth, Vai, Sheehan, and Bissonnet were gold.
Not nearly long enough. Hope there's more of Steve soon.
In my humble opinion,
Dave is the greatest frontman ever.
Yes, ever
Vai.....Humble genius!
53 and reliving the Diomond Years recently... God what fun we had.
I just wanna know how he created that solo for "The Deeper the Love" by Whitesnake. It is perfect.
That album is on my heavy rotation.
Maaan, brings back memories. I saw the Eat ‘Em Tour at Maple leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada, Cinderella opened for them with their debut album “Night Songs”. Still my favorite concert ever and I still have the ticket stub and my tour program.
The great Steve Vai is the truth. The man is a magnificent player and songwriter. I met him once, such a kind good person.
Steve Via 🎸 I just ordered his guitar ! I hope to receive it soon so I can play the Hell out of it ! Great Job PROFESSOR 🕵️♀️🎸📻🇺🇸 Thank u Steve Via for your incredible guitar style !
"Yankee Rose" is MY national anthem.
That's a great tune. I love it. I love that entire album also.
I met Steve when I was working on a cruise ship as a guitarist. He sat and watched me play!!!!???!!! He was such a gent, always remember it.
Greg Bissonette is a MONSTER!
Truely a gem - lost in the mix of the over the top glam of the 80’s (at least by some).
This was “artistic” visual glamour. The music was hard rock perfection. People with musical ears heard the difference, others lumped it together with over the top glam.
Had the pleasure of seeing the guys in Sydney Australia back in 88, awesome show and times
I love that song! That video was one of my first introductions to Steve Vai, which lead to me learning to play the guitar!
Eat Em & smile was the best Van Halen album of 1986. Saw the tour in Feb 87. One of the best concerts ever.
I remember way back when VH 5150 and Eat Em And Smile came out - my local radio station (105.7 WAPL) played the albums back to back with VH first. WAPL was having kind of a contest to see who the fans thought had a better record. I just loved 5150, but after hearing Dave's album, I got real nervous. I knew who Steve Vai was, but I just hate Ibanez guitars (little did I know) and thought " there is no WAY someone that lays an Ibanez can beat the almighty VH". After hearing Dave's album, I got really scared that he was right all along. Eat'em And Smile is still one of my fav 80's albums however.
A little competition truly helped both albums. Both are top of the line work from these musicians.
Steve is incredible at all levels! I run out of words to describe how nice he is! Great musician, and songwriter as well!
Yankee Rose will always blow my mind! Great album, great tour, saw them live in Toronto Oct 31 1986.
Loved the intro of the video. Give me a bottle of anything and a glazed donut... To go. Well done professor 👍
I think a bottle of anything with a doughnut is gross
Is it humid in here?
