  • While up at the S&S Worldwide factory, I took a spin on their new concept 'Axis.' This prototype attraction flips riders upside down in a side to side rotation throughout the twisted ride course. What did I think of this brand new creation? These are my thoughts!

I think it's really interesting that S&S uses RMC I-box track in the Free Spin, and I wonder if we might see more of that.

    @MrPopsfreshnmyer Před 4 lety +1

    This is an amazing idea. They can use this concept for pretty much any kind of experience a park could want. Family non-inverting heavily themed story experience (just think about the indoor ride possibilities) to an all out acrobatic freak out for thrill ride nuts. It looks really scalable too with launch vs lift hill (both!) and being able to make compact and large layouts so big and small park budgets could get one of these. It's like what RMC wants to do with Raptor, they're pretty cheap with how much material is needed to build them. S&S could easily create next gen Arrow Suspended coasters just by making a layout catered to non-inverting swinging. Those are dieing out so it would be awesome for that to happen.
    I can't wait to see what comes out of this.

    I think this would be fantastic for Dorney park.
    1. Lower capacity won’t be a big deal there.
    2. Totally different from anything in the area despite having so much competition.
    3. If they are the first park to get it there would likely be a discount because it would be a first of its kind and parks don’t even know if it will be a hit or not. This means Cedar fair wouldn’t have to break the bank for one of their smaller end parks.
    4. It’s been too damn long since they got a new original coaster and if they do it right, this could put them back on the map in an area that has stiff competition.
    5. If dorney doesn’t get it, six flags or Hershey park will get it and continue to take away from Dorney’s customer base.
    Note: I’m not entirely sure if reason 3 Is actually realistic, but I thought I heard prototype rides typically have a discount.

    It looks absolutely insane. Like, different from anything we've seen before in the industry. My only worry is in the way the track is shaped. I know this is only a prototype, and we have no clue what a full-scale design is going to look like, but the original Bat at Kings Island didn't really have banked turns, and because the ride traveled so quickly through the layout, the track went through obscene amounts of stress. That last turn on this model, as well as part of the roll, looks like it'd also put a lot of stress on the track and wheels, so I'm wondering how they're planning on avoiding those issues.
    This does look absolutely dope, though.

    I first saw this prototype on the ACE CZcams channel and it blew me away. I'm glad you were given this opportunity to not only ride it but also do an extensive set of videos on it, better explaining what's going on and what to possibly expect. Now for what park this should go to... I admit I'm biased in favor of my home park of Six Flags Magic Mountain. But I really think this should show up there first three reasons. 1) Arrow Dynamics' Viper custom looper is getting old and outdated. The queue for it is almost completely empty almost every time I've been there (save that Saturday I went a few weeks ago when the park was almost as filled as Disneyland on an at capacity day thanks to Fright Fest). I can't imagine it's cheap to keep it operating and it's probably well beyond its service life. 2) There's history with Six Flags and Magic Mountain and their building of a similar groundbreaking ride that sits right next to Viper... the ride that bankrupted Arrow Dynamics, X. Six Flags invested a lot of capital into that ride, even though it needed a redesign and Arrow had gone bankrupt, resulting in X2. While it's possible Six Flags could've learned the opposite lesson from their experience with X2 and would shy away from this sort of risk, I don't think this is the case here. S&S, unlike Arrow when X was being built, is in great financial shape. Especially given the fact that they're owned by the Japanese company Sansei, which had just bought Vekoma last year. I also think Six Flags will consider the expense to be worth it given that for what will be probably the price of your usual B&M coaster, they will get a first-in-the-world prototype which would be a huge draw for their flagship park. 3) A new roller coaster tends to be built at Magic Mountain every 3 years. Six Flags made the investment into West Coast Racers back in 2017 with an opening in 2019. Granted, that opening is delayed to early 2020 (much like an attraction at a neighboring park in Anaheim). But the money has been spent and the next project is probably being cooked up as we speak. Given that the next coaster Magic Mountain will likely see will be in 2022, the timing is perfect for S&S to design a potential ride at Magic Mountain (probably on the Viper site) and propose how much it will cost Six Flags to build.
    So yep, I'm thinking Six Flags Magic Mountain will be the park that gets this ride. Again, I admit I'm biased seeing as I live in Los Angeles and love that park. But the need to replace the aging Viper, the history of building a ground-breaking ride at that park, and the timing for the need of a new ride all make for a convincing argument that it will go there.

    I really hope King's Dominion decides to put this in the place of the former Volcano Coaster. Maybe even with some intricate themeing.

    It also reminds me of the new Vekoma flying coaster they are developing at Phantasialand, that will have a sideways track portion as well.

    I wouldn’t be surprised is Magic Mountain got one of these in 2021 for their 50th anniversary. Since they just removed green lantern, they could also remove tidal wave and that opens up a pretty good plot of land. I can imagine this coaster being pretty compact. Six flags has been working with S&S a lot in recent years so it would only make sense

    Great review as always taylor, you present your videos as if you’ve been doing this for decades buddy. So polished and easy to understand , i much prefer these in depth analysis than simply watching an on ride review where there’s nothing but annoying middle aged men shouting “weeee loop de loop” I equally enjoy theme park world wide and theme park crazy, you 3 have all got bags of charisma and likability 👍

    Layouts - you can stack the track in certain areas to save space. Possibly even double back on itself. Maybe even have two tracks sharing the same center support path, and have them do chicken going toward each other in a roll.

    It could break the record for the most inversions on a coaster because it wouldn't affect us as much as it would on a normal coaster but it would still be fun

    i think that this is a good candidate for a new ride for cedar point. add a lift hill, add some more rows, etc, and you have a ride that’s actually a decent candidate for the park.
    likely it’d come after whatever big addition that’s likely to happen in 2021, but by then, the folks at s&s will probably have figured out more that they can do with this and will be able to launch this model. yes, cedar fair hasn’t worked much with s&s in the past, but they didn’t work with rmc until 2018 if i remember correctly.
    other than an rmc t-rex or a launch coaster that’s not a strata, this is next on my list of rides to put at cedar point. bigger trains or more of them and a large layout you can run 4-5 trains on, and honestly it’d be an epic ride anywhere, but we know the folks at cedar point will help make the layout as amazing as it can and should be. if they remove iron dragon, which i think will happen sooner rather than later, maybe this could occupy that space? it would be Very cool to have it go over the water and add a water feature that goes off when the train passes by, dip towards the water and make it feel like you could reach out and touch the water, et cetera.

    @u1zha Před 4 lety +1

    4:35 well it likely _could_ be an inversion in an Axis, too. The designer ought to be able to make the seat fling around in almost every possible way, thanks to inertia, by picking appropriate track geometry right before an element.

    I'd love to see something like this in Phantasialand, Germany, bc I'm pretty sure they'd absolutely destroy all competition in terms of scenery with something like this. This could be an absolute banger in so many different themes. However, I don't think they'll ever get one really, A.I.R. needs to come out first, and then there's really no good place to add another well-themed coaster anywhere. Guess Europapark will be more likely to be the 1st one in Europe; or maybe Disneyland.

    Apparently one of them has been sold to a park in Europe! We don't know which park it is yet, but I can see this working really well in a park like Walibi Holland, or maybe even Toverland, since we know Toverland is getting a major expansion, but we don't know anything about that yet.

  • @scottnelson9

    I’m not sure if this thought popped into your mind, but they could build layouts with incredible maneuvers that won’t place as much stress on the track. I also know that Taylor is thinking this design would be perfect for Kings Dominion, and I agree.
