Steer gets all the praise for the walkoff but McLains homer was huge to keep the game going down to their last out
0 for 4 before that. Nothing fazes Money Matt.
And Stephenson's 2-run HR earlier in the game was big, too. But, yeah, it's always the Walkoff Hitter that gets the gatorade bath.
Both rookies, Reds future is so bright
He is the Morgan of this team. Steer is like the Bench of this team. We do need more from catchers at time, though Stephenson had a solid game.

@@dead2me810how could it be considered fair weather to be excited for your team winning for the first time in years? Last year it took two whole months more to get the wins we have this year. This team is genuinely special, and people should be excited. Just don’t expect a World Series yet. Hopefully, if we continue in this direction, we could conceivably compete for one in a couple years.

Reds fan since the 70s. I love this team. Baseball is better when the Cincinnati Reds are good.

Infield was playing in, therefore the catched is not restricted to blocking the plate or not. Good call.

Elly didn't even touch the plate and the catcher was landing from the catch. By definition not blocking.
@@verde7595It was close, I still think the tip of his mitt nipped the back end of the plate before he tagged after DLC stood up, but I do agree with the no blocking call.
I don’t think Steer was in agreement though, cause he hit that moonshot with some malicious intent. Ump can’t do much about that play!

I was there it was amazing!
Incredible game to be at. I'm sure Atlanta last week was hype too, but this had everything I could have asked for, and that walk off was so unbelievably cool to witness. People refused to leave at any point in this game, and this team rewarded them once again.

That umpire is worse than Angel Hernandez. These guys need to lose their jobs, we shouldn’t be letting them skew the games like this. The strike zone was ridiculous all night.

Wow Sanchez definitely was blocking the plate on De La Cruz slide of home these umps definitely need changed for better ones but glad that Steer delivered that walk off homer these Reds are something else with these comebacks.
Incorrect, if the infield is drawn in and there is a ground ball (as was in this case), there can be no blocking of the plate violation by rule. On the slide Elly didn't touch home plate, so he was out. One of the few times tonight the home plate ump got a call correct.
If Senzel's single went into the outfield and they tried to throw a runner out at home plate, then the blocking of the plate rules are in effect.
@craigbarr2003 Oh ok thanks for the clarification man never heard of that one but of course not many times is there a ground ball with some as fast as De La Cruz running towards home with the infield drawn in lol. I knew De La Cruz didn't touch home I just thought blocking the plate could still be called if the runner couldn't touch home due to the catcher getting in the way of the runner trying to touch home before the ball made it towards the catcher
Unfortunately, the rules say that Sanchez can block the plate. Elly would have been correct to just barrel over him

As a reds fan, it wasn’t that bad. The blocking the plate call doesn’t apply to infield hits according to the rules and Elly obviously didn’t touch home

I have been following the Reds since last year...how the predictions were for another dismal season in the dark tunnel, but what an absolute surprise. The right mix of young, hungry talent and an explosive offense.
As a Reds fan, to all the baseball fans out there, Elly being called out at home was the right call. The rule regarding the blocking of the plate is actually voided only if the infield is playing in, which they were for that play.
No it isn’t. There is absolutely nothing in the rule about that. Go read up on it. There are many comments about the rule, which gives umps interpretive information. But it absolutely does NOT void the blocking rule. Catcher still must have the ball that clearly beats the runner to be able to block. The comments refer to situations in which the catcher can’t help but be where he is. Eg, a throw takes him into the path of a runner.
I swear he still touched the plate but the replay was really bad so it was hard to tell

The catcher can legally block the plate if he has possession of the ball or if the throw takes him into the path of the runner, or if the catcher is receiving a throw from a drawn-in infielder or the pitcher.
The ump in this game was absolutely AWFUL, but man what a win for these boys. So stoked for them

Pretty sure there was some catcher interference with De La Cruz at home. The catcher was essentially straddling the base, obstructing the lane before even having possession of the ball. If the catcher was off to the side, his foot wouldn’t have been in the way and the game should have been over. This rule confuses me as it seems to be so inconsistent and varies depending on who is calling the shots at home.

The umps were terrible this game and it wasn't just the big calls either, the ump behind the plate was terrible all game, but Spencer Steer came up to the plate and basically said "ball dont lie" by walking it off.
Elly was out tho so they got that 1 right

Most blatant blocking the plate violation this year
Absolutely!! So ridiculous. My Rangers got robbed last week against the White Sox in similar fashion but on defense instead of offense, Jonah Heim got called for blocking the plate when he totally didn’t
if the infield is in, there can be no plate blocking violation. know the rules before you complain all night.
Reds telecast confirmed that plate-blocking restrictions don't apply on a ground ball with the infield in.
the plate blocking rule is totally open to interpretation it seems. should be gotten rid of entirely.

Lets be honest, this was a great game and good win but no matter the record, the Reds will do absolutely NO DAMAGE in the playoffs. I would bet anything on that. This isnt a fairytale ending folks. Just because they beat a struggling Padres and hold a decent record in a weak conference means nothing really. Hate to be the bubble burster but its true. Good game though 👏
