You need to watch the official video for this song, it's iconic - and this one cut the song off about 30 seconds too soon and missed the outgoing bass solo and a cool outro chorus from Peter and Kate singing together. Peter Gabriel was inspired to write this song after looking at pictures of families in the American dust bowl / great depression era of the 1930's and seeing the desperation and hopelessness in their eyes. He first asked Dolly Parton to sing the duet with him (for an Americana vibe), but she declined. Peter then asked his good friend and fellow genius musician Kate Bush to do the duet. For me, it is Kate that makes this song so magical. Producer Daniel Lanois said that when Kate came into the studio to perform her part, everyone there was stunned and felt like an angel had come down from heaven to sing for them. Another interesting note, bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin said that he was looking for a certain bass sound for this track but couldn't get it right. Just before they were to record the track, Levin saw that he had his baby girl's diaper bag with him in the studio and he stuffed a diaper underneath his bass strings and found the perfect muted sound he was looking for. This song has been credited by many people for changing their minds about committing suicide (including Elton John, who said it prevented him from overdosing on drugs).
Reminds me, basically nobody reacts to Daniel Lanois solo work, which is pretty amazing.
The last 30 seconds are an essential part of the song. Def check out the official video!
@@Roddy1965 i love the sling blade soundtrack
Great details and info about the song and people who made it and performed it. Thanx!
@@Roddy1965 Iâm also a fan of Daniel Lanois! am quite surprised to see someone actually mention him, here! (Although Iâm a west coaster đšđŠ who does.. recognize know of his many widely ranging talents.. heâs likely known highly respected in Quebec plus by those amazing and lucky musicians for whom he has produced very successful records.. U2, Robbie Robertson, etc etc.. Iâd love for (not only..Brad and Lex) but viewers whom arenât familiar with him.. or singers like Amanda Marshall and sooo many other singers, or unique types of musicians.. ie: >> Kitaro!
The video with the 2 of them embraced the entire time on a slowly spinning podium is pretty powerful, along with the song itself of course- beautiful- I suggest yâall check that video out on your own time, even tho Iâd love to see it- đ
A video that perfectly compliments the lyrics & mood of the song - yet so simple! The imagery of the eclipse (when all goes dark) when Kate is giving her full support, then the ring of fire as Peter sings his desperation has always struck me as stunning! Beautiful song, beautiful video!
@@EchoesDaBear absolutely! đ
I feel itâs a disservice to the reactor NOT to do the official video, personally
Not forgetting the eclipsing sun behind them. It took me years to spot that!
And so perfectly timed that the singer is always in front of the spinning podium even if their text is taking a few seconds longer.
Guys, this is a song that really needs to have the official video rather than a lyric video. The official video is almost as iconic as the song.
This is about a man who has given up on life. Kate is the partner/wife giving him the reassurance that we should never give up.
It's never really defined what the relationship was. You may be right, but I always felt like she was playing his sister or maybe a close cousin. In any event, it's clear that she plays a woman who loves him and emotionally supports him. We should all have a person like that in our lives. Unfortunately, what I hear too often is people urging others to cut people out of their lives if they show any signs of weakness or other flaws. It seems a part of the SJW Cancel Culture.
Kate's voice is just so beautiful.
The song was written about the UK miners in the 80s with industry being shut down.
The towns had the majority of folks working there,as a result of closure it turned towns into a place full of people with no jobs, which in turn affected everything as a result.
Shops would eventually close due to no one buying goods, less vehicles on the road as they couldnât afford to keep them on the road.
The struggle of being able to put a roof over your familyâs head and food on the table to one day being not able to.
Beautiful song with a very powerful message behind it.
Maggie was what the 80s needed. She sorted the country out.
are you insane?@@ThePeterCorne
@@lillired857 no and the public agreed and voted her in again
This song has gotten me through challenging times before.
Me, too, in a profound way.
Agreed
I thought of it as an âanti-give upâ song, donât give up, remember you have friends
According to Elton Johnâs autobiography, âMeâ, during rehab, he played this song on repeat whenever he felt depressed about the state of his life. It made him feel strong emotions and inspired him to rise up from rock-bottom!
Fun fact. I live on Guernsey, Sir Elton came here when he was in rehab and used to go to a place called The Fermain Tavern and jam with local musicians to help him in recovery
The "So" album is one of the truly greats of its time and of all time.
I have been a Peter Gabriel fan for some time. Hearing this song about fifteen or so years ago I became interested in Kate Bush 's voice. She is a hell of an artist in her own right!
Kate's heavenly voice...... â€
I â€ïž this song, and Peter Gabriel. This song can lift me up at my worst moments. It may have saved my life at some point.
This music video makes me cry every time. You know there is at least one suicidal person who heard this song and found the strength to go on. Kate Bush is such a pure soul.
How well has this album aged! Peter Gabrielâs âSoâ is a masterpiece in my opinion.
Every song is choice and worthy of many repeats. Iâm still waiting for someone to
do âRed Rain.â
Red Rain is a dream. Brad likes songs about dreams.
The word "masterpiece" gets thrown around an awful lot (along with "underrated").....but I totally agree with you!!!!!
Me too. Peter's 'Red Rain' is an absolute monster, especially the live version.
Yep, yes and yea to everything you just said, it's an iconic album, every song is amazing but I agree "Red Rain" rocks the fucking casbah :)
The prog metal band I was in during the 90's covered this song. The song is so powerful, it fit right in with the rest of our songs.
Iâve connected with this for a long time, and I get different contexts over the years. As you both said, two people in a relationship talking together, or their kids, or sometimes Kateâs voice almost sounds like itâs an angel singing to him. Sometimes it sounds like Peterâs character may be suicidal and sheâs trying to talk him off the ledge. Other times it sounds more like heâs leaving or threatening to leave her or the family. He feels like heâs not successful enough. The beauty of music. It doesnât matter exactly what the writerâs intention was, itâs what you get out of it. Two of my favorite musicians for sure
Same thoughts. Well said
Very well said!
It's from the 1980's and at that time unemployment was sky high in the UK, as was inflation and interest rates. It's about a man losing his job and facing losing his home etc and his wife trying to keep him going and positive. The mid 1980's were tough in the UK and in some more industrial towns were hit really badly with factories etc closing and men who had worked their whole working lives in the same job lost those jobs and many couldn't get work, this song tells the story of their desperation.
This is what I always thought it was about. Wasnât this when the mines that were left in the UK were closing for good and that is the start of factories closing and opening in poor countries.
@@shelleybleu4903 Yes, a lot of the industrial and mining towns had it really hard at that time and when people lost their jobs they had little hope of getting another one then.
Somebody should call it out by name: It's about the disaster of Thatcherism.
I was there as well, it was awful, the tory gov destroyed the country, especially Scotland, a really bad time and it seems it is happening again. A beautiful song nonetheless, always on the edge of when I hear it or see the video. On a lighter note, hugging Kate Bush for a couple of hours wouldn't be a challenge for me.
Sad Thatchers time about the miners I Wales.
The song is inspired by the photographs of Dorothea Lange taken during the Great Depression in the USA. At the same time, the UK where Peter is from was teetering on the brink of depression. With the collapse of the Empire and Britain losing its industrial base to the US and other nations. Unemployment was epidemic. People lost jobs they had had for a lifetime, often a job that had been in the family for generations. Suicide was spiking. You will also note a nod to the classic Frank Capra movie It's A Wonderful Life.
Brilliant work and very emotional. Watch the original video. Watch the man fighting despair and his wife/girlfriend building him up. Anyone that has been held up in a crisis by someone they love knows the deep emotions there.
Such a beautiful song. This whole album is timeless perfection.
It's a song about a man losing his job. And trying hard to find work. It was written during the 1980s , when many people didn't have work in the UK, back then.
This version is so beautiful to me đđđâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž maybe because they were an actual couple. I like that sentiment. Supporting your partner. We are here for you, we arent going anywhere, keep your head up. Please don't give upđâšâšâš I'm proud of you.. that saying that to someone can completely change their outlook. Kate bush has tried her entire career to be relatable to average people with her subject matter, soft and delicate. and i really appreciate that. As long as you have your family your partner that is what matters. Reassurance. Peter Gabriel is just fabulous đđâšâš Great inspirational song. Beautiful đčđčđčđčđčđčâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžđđđ i love them very sweet between a couple. Tough times pull together đđâš no reason to be ashamed dont give up now we are proud of who you are.
This is a song about Brad andLex!
Kate Bush is my pop queen â€ïž
As a kid I was in love with Kate Bush and Siouxie Sioux
Greetings from Serbia đ·đž
Brad was right on the money, female vocal is the wife reminding him of the immense love and support given to him unconditionally from her and the kids..
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded
The video is great. How I would love a hug like that from Kate.
2 of my favourite artists, both great poets...
two of the most beautiful voices.
"Shake the Tree" from Peter Gabriel's Secret World Tour is a must along with "In your Eyes"!
Definitely.
Shaking the Tree..
Best duet ever
A song for all times, it came out during the miners strike in the UK, where families had fuk all as they were relying on handouts from trade unions and members of the public as they were striking to stop profitable mine closures and job losses during the Thatcher era. That went on for a few years, so you have towns that were just all made unemployed overnight, with no thought of job replacements or retraining, as you can assume this song has relevance for the miners and thier courage through the hardship. Just search miners (battle of orgreave is only one) strike UK to see. But it has relevance for every person and the troubles of life that beset them.
Well.... that's not strictly true.
1) the song came out 2 years after Arthur Scargill had lead his "lions", by being a "Donkey",
2) the mines were NOT profitable, otherwise the money driven capitalist Thatcher would definitely have kept them open
3) the previous Labour government(s) under Wilson & Callaghan shut twice as many mines as Thatcher.
......but ignoring all of that. both Gabriel & Bush were seriously middle class "public school" (private school for US readers) educated & by the time this song was written were both millionaires in their own rights.
They literally had zero idea what unemployed working class people could have experienced.
Gabriel himself has said the song was inspired by pictures of the 1920's USA depression..... If you seriously examine his back catalogue (including Genesis) you will see he was fascinated by history/mythology/legends - a product of his Charterhouse School education.....
But.... it's an amazing song, by 2 of my favourite artists.... & if people can still draw strength from it 36 years later, go for it.......!
@@nigellusby8256 Hi Nigel, I was giving a rough general timeline, but if you want to be pedantic then yes you are correct.
As regards mines being not profitable your talking nonsense as towards the end she did close down profitable mines, British Steel industry etc, privitise nationally owned companies etc...
You made a slipup you called it Gabriel and bush.. tut tut
Spoken like a true right-winger, by stating because of someone's education, monetary value excludes them from being decent people with empathy for those worse of than themselves. Gabriel's Career and songs were found on it. Because he's not Black he can't sing about the oppression, hardship and ultimate death and gaslighting of his political ideas and motivation of Biko?
She also sings backup in Gabriels Games without Frontiers.
You have to see the emotional video. Two of our greatest artists.
Sting, Bryan Adams, and Rod Stewart All for one is another good one
Don't give up, we're so proud of you. That's what each of us should be giving to those around us.
Kate Bush is in my opinion our countries greatest ever Female artist
An absolute treasure and a genius, not only a fantastic writer and singer but her musical talents are crazy, nothing she can't do.
@@manna6618 lm Kate Bush bonkers my favourite of all time like you said genius
Absolutely agree. Kate is a one-of-a-kind artistic genius
đđđđđđđ
Great song. This is an unbelievably good song to react to. This song has always had personal meaning to me. His voice in this song is amazing. Her voice carries such emotion.
2 of the biggest legends of music... such a great duet !!!
Oh, shame you didn't get to see this as well as hear it, bit heavy and extremely good. Great reaction guys, love the way you feel your way into a quick interpretation of the meaning of the song. This one isn't as directly obvious these days. 80's England was a shit place to be for most of us, especially up north as town after town as devastated by Thatcher's insistence on shutting it all down to regrow London, lots of London was pretty dire too. Police were brutal with the working classes, unemployment was super high, the rich were getting richer, yuppies were lording it about, disease poverty and sickness was rife for the poor. He played the part of a man that had been hit too hard, tried everything but felt like he'd failed, was he even heading to suicide?? She was not wanting that and was trying to keep him with her, it's not his fault. Incredibly sad song and hit a lot of people hard but this also helped people. :( :) A work of genius, well, 2 of them.
If you want your head to explode, listen to Kate Bush's "Suspended in Gaffa", from "The Dreaming".
If you want your brain to melt, listen to any of the other songs off of The Dreaming.
I bought the album for the former, but HATED the rest of the Album. It sounded either insane, or like an incompetent effort.
But...
Something kept me coming back to it...
I now consider The Dreaming to be amazing, almost genius.
Not perfect, but mesmerizing.
Totally agree, my favorite Kate Bush, so crazy but amazing.
Mesmerizing.... that's a perfect descriptor. Well-said. đđ
The first time I listened to The Dreaming I didn't get it. I didn't hate it but it just seemed weird. After several more listens it clicked and I got it. Now I love it and consider firmly in the genius category.
An amazing, unique, moving, transforming song.
I love the way the hi-hat is being tickled the whole way through.
I first heard this song when my father had just been downsized from work. It was horrible. I played this song for him. He had tears in his eyes.
One of the most beautiful and depressive duets on Earth. And you try. To help. To support. Not enough probably. And sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.. And when you lose and a loved one gives up (after an almost superhuman hard struggle) the fall out is pretty dark and grim for a few years. But you really have to see the video. You'll understand it better. Just embracing each other. It's all you can do sometimes in *ucking dark times. And it's not always enough. Sometimes a beloved just can't take it anymore.
A "woman's work" by Kate Bush is an essential listen
You should check out Peter Gabriels "Red Rain" and Kate Bushs "This Woman's Work" both amazing songs from these two artists
You guys should react toâŠ

đžđ€
So glad you've now listened to this, as others say, the video is worth watching. Powerful stuff from two of my fave artists.
Guaranteed to make me cry EVERY. DAMN. TIME.
Missed so much. The magic of the drop before Kate sings â€
For me itâs a song about the Great Depression . The man feels ashamed he canât provide for his family and he fells like a failure. His wife is saying âdonât give up, weâre proud of who you areâ.
It's about the 1980's UK depression.
That Bass Drop
This song makes me tear up everytime.
This song always gets me. If you have ever struggled, you can relate.
The lyrics show that you donât need to rhyme to make the music a song. The voice intonation makes it work.
Never a dry eye when I listen to this song.
Peter Gabriel was a mentor of Kate when she was a teen, and he sang on her 1979 Christmas special. But her biggest mentor was David Gilmore of Pink Floyd.
The pressure on a man to provide for and protect his family during hard times.
Gabriel and Bush have a kindred spirit that work well together
Elton John said this song helped in his recovery from drug addiction. I'm sure the song is responsible for saving countless lives.
One of my favorites â€â€ amazing songggg
More KATE BUSH please!! đ
YES ! đ„°â€đ„°
This song is a mirror to our society. We feel so dependent of material success, we think we lost our value if we are not successful . What I hear in this song is you donât have to be wealthy to be a good person, it just matters how you treat people.
One of my all-time favourites. Perfect duo.... I think the gist of the song is about lifes struggles that we go through.
Absolutely one of my all time favorite songs! So beautiful and powerful. I can't listen to it without getting very emotional though, especially during Kate's parts, so I try not to in public đ . I recently heard Wolfgang Van Halen and his mom, Valerie Bertanelli, on the radio doing a show and playing songs they like and this was one of them. She said she used to play it for Eddie whenever he was feeling down.
Sweet Kate and Peter.....what a musical Couple.....
The video is a must watch if you like this song. I'm not sure how you could not like this song though. Peter Gabriel has put so many songs out that make you think and smile.
Love how you guys Have covered most of all my time favorite bands! From my two all my time favorite Artists WAYLON And Kate Bush and everything Between! We all have to do are part to leave all this Great Music to the Next Generation!
The song is inspired by the photographies of Dorothea Lange taken during the Great Depression in the USA.
I think the context is pretty literal. Bad job market, people are out of work and they need love from friends to carry them through hard times.
Awww. So glad you guys are giving SO a listen.
Still my favourite song ever... so beautifull
Fantastic song, I remember breaking into tears when I saw him play it live (with Ane Brun). So powerful. Speaking of Peter Gabrielâs storytelling, you should check out âFamily Snapshotâ, one of his best IMO.
Shame you couldn't watch the film clip, really makes the song so much more personal...but I get it, CZcams policy. Fab song, thanks guys. X
When things are getting rough, I hope you take this beautiful song to heart.
This is something, I've yet to understand.. while Brad its understandable the Brad would like to have the lyrics available, why the heck does it have to be at the cost of losing out on so much?! and by that I mean it can be a wide range of amazing videos some with amazing live show performances, superb, unique animation (Peter Gabriel is especially known for so many of them!) to the sheer beauty, and intimacy of the whole video that shows Kate and Peter in a loving embrace while a camera does a 360 degree filming. You are Missing Soooo Much! Brad, Please download the lyrics, have them sitting in place beside you and allow yourselves (and especially Lex, if You aren't interested) to see and enjoy doing her 'chair bops!' along with the numerous ones that she'd enjoy?! Please just try doing things differently.. you have a lot more to gain, esp in understanding meaning etc.. given how that is of utmost importance to you! Give it a shot! You just.. might! Like it!! It would get blocked with the original video, this way it just another lyrics video which is fine and won't get blocked.
Exactly!!! Freaking Joe lyric
@@passatgt having mentioned your comment to my hubby, he explained to me that apparently, thatâs true in some cases, for various reasons (I find it odd/weird?) esp when there are several other reactors whom have the full original video (ie: incl on another fave reactor of ours, Jamal) I think ultimately though, it remains that Brad loves his lyrics đđ€which I can certainly appreciate, as so do I. I would love to see them both be able to enjoy,.. what in many cases (such as for this particular song) can be anything from emotionally stirring/ wondrous, or amusing, foot tapping/ get up cause ya wanna dance.. and numerous other widely varying types of videos!âŁ
@@cherisparkes4447 it is really hard, some channels get blocked if the original video clip is shown, some not. Its not worth the risk, because it is easy to get the whole channel banned sadly. Thats why they try to pause a couple of times too, just to get around the blocking issues.
I think itâs about a returning soldier trying to fit back into society and his gf trying to support him and say he still has value
As others have said you really do need to watch the official music video as the version that you reacted to (for some reason) cut off the last 30 seconds. If you haven't yet reacted to Kate Bush you really need to do so, since she's a musical genius who's massive outside of America and she has been a key influence on so many musicians that came ater her. Prior to this duet she had previously worked with Peter Gabriel back in 1980, when she provided backing vocals on two tracks "No Self Control" and "Games Without Frontiers". Peter Gabriel introduced Kate to the Fairlight CMI, we she started to use on her third album "Never For Ever" and then to very much greater effect on her subsequent albums "The Dreaming" and "Hounds Of Love". It was "Hounds Of Love" that finally made her have an impact in America.
Yep...live is sooo different and beautiful đđđ never saw anything like it!!!!
One of my all time favorites. Definitely need to watch the video.
Ex-Genesis member and a league of her own "Kate Bush" you get this.
Next react: "A woman's work". Original versus cover. Kate Bush vs Maxwell. (Mid-90s)
Itâs from the perspective of a husband trying to find his way through the great depression and economic downturn. Gabriel said he wanted to write about someone that had lost hope and any confidence in themselves or what they knew about the world. Staring into the abyss their love pulls them back reminding them of who they are and what they have to fight for. That even if they donât believe in themself anymore their love does.
I love this song, and I really enjoyed your assessments of it. It brings some emotions out that I normally keep at arms length, but sitting here with some unexpected tears I'm reminded that I'm thankful for this song. It's a go-to song - along with another - that stopped a downward spiral.
Things are really rough for a lot of us right now. Today, you guys reminded me that being alive is still great.
Thank you. Much love and respect to you guys. Keep it up. đđâ€
Super inspirational song...my friends used to have me listen to this when I was in deep throws of addiction...they had no words for me other than don't give up.
Along with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Peter were established artistes that took the child prodigy Kate under their wings, musically. Kate sang backing vocals on peter's album from 1979 - songs such as Games Without Frontiers. Originally, Don't Give Up was a country-and-western style song, a la Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams etc
Another pop song I became a fan of by watching "Miami Vice". The episode was when the Crockett character went too deep into his undercover identity and got lost. When his true identity starts coming back, this song accompanied him through his recovery scene. When he arrived at headquarters, he was promptly surrounded by every gun in the police station because of how lethal his undercover persona "Sonny Burnett" had become.
For real, Miami Vice had some great music!
Itâs so great how movies, tv and, nowadays, even video games can expose you to and make you a fan of music and artists you may have missed out on otherwise.
This is (in my opinion) a masterpiece - love this song.
About 11 years ago, I lost my job and it took nearly a year before I could get another one. It was my wonderful loving wife of 42 years who said all of this to me and more. It was the only thing that kept me going. Today we are doing great, and I owe it all to her. I was so close to giving up.
Two brilliant artists, one beautiful song.
Brad Lex you must watch the video to this it will come a cross much more moving
This song was a life saver - nuff said
The us in the song is the 2 of them, he is jobless in an economic depression, she's telling him it's going to be okay if they stick together
Actually I never thought anyone would ever be utterly at a loss as to the meaning behind the song before!
Brilliant song. another classic 80s song đ
Born on the lakeside. I grew up on a lake. Amazing memories.
The dang lyric video was cut about a minute too short! Missing the great bass outro, solo along with the keyboard/synthesizer outro. Well, yall should watch the videos whenever yall get the chance! Very touching and you get the whole complete song. . There were 2 music videos for this song. The one most memorable and got more airplay is the one with Kate and Peter hugging, embracing each other while singing the whole song. The other one was kind of black and white, with Peter singing, with Kate coming in/out occasionally in a kind of ghostly appearance in the background, if that makes any sense, kind of hard to describe lol. While showing many unemployment people at offices, also showing depressed people drinking and stress at home, families. Strong messages, watch the videos.
This song is about staying strong during tough times. It was a pretty big song, especially in the UK. Kate and Peter are from the UK and very good friends, too. This was the '80s. UK was going through a recession, The Cold War was still happening back then, political unrest, unemployment, layoffs were high, this affected families/relationships, depression/suicides were spiking, etc.
This song was encouraging and saved many lives over the years. People go through things, very various things.
Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel (formerly with Genesis) are some of the best musicians out there, going back decades. Also both are very creative and have unique, great voices.
Peter is THE VOICE of early Genesis....they were never the same after he left JMHO!
It may sound silly, but Peter Gabriel is maybe my favourite singer of all the singers that aren't my favorite singers :)
His singing is so expressive!
Peter Gabriel The Book of Love is a beautiful song to check out.
This is the most subdued I have ever seen you two!!
Miami Vice, season 5 episode Redemption in Blood when Crockett's memory is gone but he returns to Miami and remembers his past, that's when this song was played. This song went massively viral after that episode.
Official video is best. It's really simple but done very well. Watching a lyric video is distracting because your brain is trying to read ahead instead of letting the song hit you as it was meant to. Still, I love watching your videos. You both compliment each other well for these reactions videos. Brad is so serious and studied. Lex is so emotional and really shows how she feels the songs. Magic.
You do need to see the official video. So many are saying it, believe them. Kate also sung on Peter's song Games Without Frontiers...
One of the most utterly beautiful pop songs ever recorded.
This is one of my favorite songs! The video is great too!
