    Thanks for the review Jerad! Really glad you like the knife so much, and I appreciate the feedback regarding the position of the plunge line! Not something I had thought about before, or heard from a customer, so it's great to hear a new thought! I will definitely keep that in mind for the next version, the Resolute MkIV.
    Worth noting that you might have seen Canadian pricing and thought it was USD! The model you had in the video is USD$390, and I would personally not describe it as a 'mid-tech' because I do all the work myself in my own workshop.
    I do understand that the price tag is still hefty, and I often wish I could lower prices but honestly the overhead involved in making knives full time just has to be seen to be believed... If I make 15 knives in a month then the best case scenario is that I take home about $2,400 that month assuming that nothing breaks and that I have no debt to repay, which is never the case lol. I did a more detailed response regarding this in a reply to 'Schmidty the Kid' just below.
    The one thing I will say: I aim to deliver high, well above people's expectations and I'm proud to say that I seem to usually manage that! I know from experience that when something is really nice to use, you forget the price quickly but still have the pleasure of using it for a long time to come... That is the feeling I aim to deliver! 🙂
    EDIT: Regarding the glow scales - if you are in a dark area (like a tent in the woods) you will still be able to see the glow liners the next morning if they were well charged the evening before 🎉 developing the process for making those was hilariously painful, and I sank more money into that than I probably should have lol. However I have always wanted to do that and I LOVE the way they come out now, so I think it was worth it! END EDIT
    Thanks again for the review! Feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions about the process, materials or design choices! aaron@goughcustom.com

      Thank you for watching, others did inform me about the price difference, and I stand corrected I think your prices are more than fair and I will be sure to mention that in my lives to the audience and also pin your comment, your knife is extremely well done and very impressive one of these days hopefully I can get one for some use/Sharpening exc.. and do one of my full reviews and testing videos which are far more indepth. I'm always open to trying anything you have coming in the future, I can tell you put a lot of hard work passion and love into these, after testing and reviewing so many knives I could tell the second I laid my hands on it, which is more difficult to appreciate through pictures. Thank you again Mr.Gough 👊 and thank you for your amazing talent and hard work

      Love my Resolute!
      Cuts like a laser.
      Took it camping and batoned through some knotted fir with the back of an axe. Barely marred the dlc. Frankly, I cringed with every whack having seen larger blades fracture under similar beatings and honestly won't do it again, it was stupid but it held up.
      It is pretty thin behind the edge, I don't feel any need to knock down the edge bevel.
      What makes it great is just how applicable the entire design is, making for a great daily carry. From food prep to fire making to skinning to breaking down cardboard, it's just about perfect all around knife.

  • @garyfairbrother5532
    @garyfairbrother5532 Před rokem +4

    I purchased a knife from Aaron in 2016 after watching many of his a videos and admiring his skill and ethics as much as his Resolute knife. At that time I think the price was 350 USD. I received delivery in 2 months even though at that time deliveries were projected to be much longer. It arrived in pristine condition with detailed provenance. I admired it for days and then put it away unused. At 78 (72 when purchased) I was not a bushcrafter but as a collector, only bought it with an eye toward gifting an heirloom to my Grandson (who was 16 at the time) in the future, when warranted, for a special accomplishment. I took it out of the original shipping box (exactly like the one in this video) just now to admire it again and soon it will be in his hands as a West Point graduate, class of 2023. Worth every damn penny!

      I'm guessing you're referring to the glow liners?? They were actually a hilarious pain in the ass to get right lol... I have a drawer full of failed attempts to make it come out the way I want! I plan to do a video soon showing how I make them, I actually machine pockets into the G10 handle material and then cast the glow liners into those pockets! They are basically 100% solid 'Strontium Aluminate' glow powder, mixed with some epoxy and a bright green pigment to get the great daylight color! Lots of work to get it right, but I am so happy with the way they come out!

    I've been watching Aaron Gough's CZcams channel for years. He used to make awesome videos about knife making, but has tapered his video production a lot to focus on producing his knives. I really want Dutch Bushcraft Knives to get ahold of one of these knives and put it through the ringer.It's a beautiful knife, but over priced for what it is especially considering the amount of automation he has in his shop. I understand overhead, material costs, and the fact that he is a custom knife maker, but $400-$500 USD for a fixed blade knife with A2 steel is kind of ridiculous. That being said I have been coveting one of Aaron's knives for years and if I had the money I would buy one despite what I just said about it being overpriced.

    • @toomanytrades
      @toomanytrades Před 2 lety +3

      Do you remember when he hand filed all of his knives with a homemade file jig? No belt grinder bevels done in his shop. His work then was very impressive. The price is steep but I will have one one day, that's if I could ever get on his books.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom Před 2 lety +5

      Hey Schmidty!
      I honestly wish that I could lower prices, but the overheads associated with making knives full time are more than you would believe! I think the knife market is a little skewed in some ways because there are so many great makers that are part-time and subsidize their knifemaking with their day jobs, and honestly there's a reason for that: to make knives full time is just SUPER expensive, and making enough money to actually live off is REALLY hard!
      My DLC coated knives are USD$390, materials for the knife is right around USD$100 - USD$120 (bear in mind I ONLY use materials made in the USA, and prices are going up FAST), that leaves about CAD$340 per knife. My workshop rent is $2,000 a month, plus $280 for power, $230 for insurance, $100 for internet, $100 for bookeeping/accounting/banking, and I'm sure there's more that I have forgotten! That's $2,700 a month in expenses before I get to take anything home...
      On average I'm able to make about 15-20 knives per month currently, which means that in the absolute best case I get to take home $4,100/month. However that never really happens because there's always extra expenses, something breaks and I have to fix it, or I'm paying off debt from things like having to move workshop or having electrical work done, etc... In 2020 I made $29k for the year lol. Bear in mind that housing and cost of living prices in Canada tend to be a fair bit higher than in the US, and I live in Toronto which is the one of the most expensive part of Canada, so unfortunately $29k does not go far!
      This is not a sob story, rather I think it's important to highlight that I have actually done a LOT to not raise my prices. Over the last 9 years I've only raised my prices from USD$350 to USD$390, but in the same period of time my rent has gone from $650 to $2,000 and materials costs have more than doubled across the board...
      Realistically going forward I either need to start making more knives, or raise my prices... I am trying to go the 'make more knives' route, but I will absolutely not compromise on quality to do so, which makes life really hard! Making more knives also means investing more in machinery and automation, which requires large up-front investments, and that's really hard to do when the business is not already making a lot of money. In fact I recently went back to working a day job just so the bank would not laugh at me when I tried to get a mortgage 🤣
      Really appreciate that you like my knives so much, and I hope you get to make you one one day!
      -Aaron

And I appreciate that you will not compromise on the quality of your knives despite those costs. I hope you continue to do what you’ve been doing and producing a quality product. 1 USD is about 1.28-1.29 Canadian, so the $500 CAD price point is about $390-400 USD. As you said, that is getting into custom territory, or at the least higher end steels. I discovered him quite a few years ago through his youtube channel and they have always been quite high priced, it seems to be the biggest complaint you see about his knives. They are beautiful, and they work, but you can get as good or better for less from others.
    Another Canadian maker, North Arm knives (Skaha fame), has the Lynx model, S35VN steel for $180 CAD (with G10 scales) which is $140 USD. A little less toughness but more edge holding for almost 1/3rd of the price.
