- Deep Purple Mark 2 perform 'Mandrake Root' live for their Southbank TV performance on the 28th July 1970 at South Bank Queen Elizabeth Hall UK.
With a phenomenal extended improv ending giving it all the antics of a true rock band - trashing the equipment and leaving the stage in a cacophony of noise - rock n roll!
Ian Gillan spoke to Melody maker at that time "The Southbank thing was great, we got top billing above Blue Mink and the Settlers. The other groups played to back tracks, but we took all our gear and played live. Of course, as usual, the audience was made up of a lot of older people. Anyway we played "Child in Time", which is a pretty quiet one for us. It was funny - when we finished we said we were going to do a loud one, and half the audience walked out. Still, we were pleased to do it, the producer, Brian Izzard, gave us a lot of freedom and a half hour set. We didn't give a monkey about the people who walked out."

I love his music, but he seems in interviews like he has ice water running through his blood vessels. The same is true of Gene Simmons. I'm glad I can separate art from its artists.

Me to. In 1973 my older cousin presented me to all the great bands of that time. One band kept me going back for more up to today.
The level of talent on that stage is mind blowing. And they were still young and learning yet brought it on levels many seasoned pro's never achieve.
Apart from Ian Paice, who is about 22 here, they aren't *that* young, all mid-20's or older, but the level of ability is really quite good, isn't it?

Film cameras was pretty good in the 70s, but expensive, the really expensive ones was as good as modern digital cameras even.
Ian Paice held all this together,and on a modest drum kit.The sign of a great drummer.

It's absolutely fascinating to witness 5 monsters of classic rock, craft their art live on stage! Loved them ever since I first heard them during 1970, and still live them today, at 67 years and still rocking with DP. RIP JL.😢

Changes indeed. In 1971 my sis got Middle of the Road's single "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep", but also Black Sabbath's album "Master of Reality". We also listened alot to DP, "Machine Head" is my favourite.

Because there was John Bonham, John Henry Bonham, Then there were all the other drummers! Bonham is in a category all by himself.
Perhaps THEE most underrated drummers in Rock history
Ya, he never gets mentioned, but check out those vintage Bohnam Triplets he was doing, then accenting right hand left hand within the Triplet and so clean. When a Triplet falls apart all of a sudden you've got that back and forth thing happening to many a drummer, which if you don't pull out of it well sounds like a bunch of slop .... Mr. Paice could have played for 30 minutes easily, but the part didn't call for it so he did exactly what he had to do, which was Nail the solo for the time given .... Ian Paice is basically a Lefty Bohnam. Probably the most under rated drummer in the History of Rock, yet he is top 5 all time, certainly top 10.

I can't believe what Ritchie Blackmore did on his guitar and it was in 1970, he literally put to shame all the guitar players who played back in 1970, i always considered mr. Blackmore as one of the great guitar players of all times but i thought that he started with his greatness later, like from 1972 to 1986, this is mindblowing, all the members of the band at this show are extraordinaire, this is unbelievable stuff, thanks for sharing.

DP locked into a Dionysian, 'high-energy-at-all-costs' approach to rock. Only regret is losing that badass funky groove from the intro --- sacrifices must be made.

@@markking6327 Deep Purple from '69 to '73 are unbeatable. Blackmore is a far better guitarist than Page, Lord was the cherry on the cake. Each Deep Purple member had much more knowledge of music than Zeppelin.
Members of Deep Purple created others famous and influents bands, like Rainbow, Gillan, Whitesnake.
On the otherside Zeppelin members were and still more loyal and friends to each other and approached Deep Purple ti Hard Rock. Deep Purple despite "internal problems" beated and passed Zeppelin, especially in live performances.

Some of the instrumental part of that song was in Space Truckin from Made In Japan, back when they were the loudest band out there.
Proof that you don't necessarily need a big drumkit to do powerhouse drumming.
When you see the likes of Neil Peart and Roger Taylor surrounded by drums, yet Ian Paice gets more bite and drive from his "smaller" kit.
Easier to throw around at the gig's end as well.

The level of musicians is the highest, even after half a century - only a few can play so masterfully.
I love this period of Deep Purple! Everyone talks about how great Made In Japan is, but all of the live performances I've heard from around this time have an additional level of fire and edge, in my opinion.
This is a prime example of why the Daily Telegraph wrote in February of 1971, "Where others may sap the emotions, Deep Purple squeezes, then crushes the senses and afterwards it all seems like having been bludgeoned slowly into a condition of acquiescent insensibility."

To do music like this you need energy to communicate energy. There was a complete freedom to find new sounds while improvising.
I doubt it's still possible at 70 years old, even if Paice, Glover and Gillan who are still playing in the group have all my respects 👏👏👏
