I don’t think Ive ever heard Derrick talk as positively about Crawford as he did about Tank. He was legit dismissing everything about Crawford from his ability to switch stances to saying he’s not skilled, just athletic. You ask him about Tank and he couldnt stop with the compliments if he tried.
Like they asked about Devin fighting style and he brings up tank. Even caught himself and said “wait we not even talking about Tank” 😂

Derrick James is an amazing coach. Love his honesty on hearing him say ryan should have taken the rolly fight to build a bond/experience between ryan and derrick before a harder fight arguably being Devin. A fight with Rolly meant more preparation to prepare for a fight against Devin further sharpening Ryans skill.
Derrick is not a good coach in my opinion he’s very overrated but would have to know your boxing to understand what I’m talking about

He's trash as a teacher. He's a good at building a fighter's confidence and allowing a fighter to feel like a boss and not be told what to do. He is a hustler though to where he will adapt to a fighter's ego. He didn't say a word when Spence started drinking heavy and stopped coming to the gym before the accident. I say he's trash because he allowed Spence to abandon his body attack and become a head hunter. Spence also became lazy with the jab and started pawing with it. A real trainer corrects those habits. There's an old video of Derreck James as Boxer and he had horrible technique and lacked fundamentals. How can you teach fundamentals if you never used fundamentals as a Boxer. 😅

Derrick James is a great boxing coach. He's really smart. I think if Garcia stays with him Derrick can make Ryan a all around great boxer. The more they train together the bond will make them better.

He cares, it’s just that he’s a man, man. He don’t believe in negativity, emotions, complaining, or making excuses.
He’s not going to entertain the media like that, it’s all business inside the gym with him. He let the fighters or promoters promote.
Derrick James is sigma and introverted man, and that’s why him and Errol get along like they do because Spence is the same way.
If Errol cared for DJ, he would've been more focused on staying in the gym instead of clubs and liquor. Vidor Texas, I'll tell you a few spots you can go and catch Errol still doing the same thing. I rock with Errol, but he's just not focused anymore

In the wake of whats recently happened with he and Errol (that I don't think had yet occurred when this interview took place), I still think this is a great interview.
Most trainers tend to be very humble guys willing to train most. I've been in and out of boxing gyms for 40+ years and what I really admire out of Derrick is he's giving knowledge back and teaching.
We have a ton of "barking orders" guys but we don't have a lot of teachers who understands the nuances and such in boxing.
Derrick seems to be one of those guys who can talk to you about the "boxing" aspects of the game. Many want to hear him go into the politics and he (as he admitted about plausible deniability) stays away from that. I've noticed this in press conferences and other interviews.
Great questions asking him about Joshua, Ryan and Martin.
He comes off to me as one of the guys whether he has champions or not. He'd still be training fighters.
