I’m curious, if you aren’t from the US: Is this considered offensive in your country? (original vid is by TikTok/ @fannyjanethduran and TikTok/@khaby.lame ) #raywilliamjohnson #tiktok #shorts
@@tomasrodriguesvaz9237 offensive in the US. The US is not the world. There is a story telling skit thing in South India the place where I live. There is a character who does the blackface make up. Some American tourists visit our place and find this habit offensive. At first I never understood why they had to make a big deal out of it. But now it's different. There are certain things that are considered offensive in our country but it's fine in yours like in the Northern part of India beef consumption is considered to be very offensive and if you are known to consume beef you would be walking in the same shoes that of a cancelled person since it hurts the religious sentiments of many. People eat dogs in certain countries but in the US it would be considered as a cruel act. Cultures in different places differ drastically and that's why you should not judge someone. You can't call an African tribesman an animal abuser because he killed a wild animal. He would be considered a hero if he brings back food for his tribe.
I think context matters. And I think here she's doing it to A) show her skills. And B) for entertainment. I don't think she's doing it as a slur or in a derogatory manner
I'm black myself and it's honestly not offensive. Instead I'm actually impressed. She is just trying to show off her make up skills by trying to look like other famous people or characters. She has done it before with other famous people and so has plenty of other make up artists, I've even seen a couple of black women do their makeup to look like white people or characters and nobody got offended, it's basically just a trend to show how good their makeup skills are and it's actually really impressive how good they are. I get that it has a bad history but back then it was used completely different than how it was used in this video. She wasnt trying to mock our skincolour in a racist way, people get offended by literally anything these days even sending death threats to her and her familymembers which is crazy.
The point is that minstrel shows usually were black coal like colored faces with bright red or pink lips. She made herself look like him, she wasn't doing a stereotype or mocking him, she literally just made his face and it looks wicked awesome
To me, this is just a makeup look. Not the really crude shoe polish or brown paint look you see from people doing blackface. She's just capturing his likeness and if neither of them are from the US then it's not a big deal. She's not being disrespectful or demeaning at all. And just as a side note, no one who does blackface actually bothers to add different warm and cool tones to make it look realistic like that.
Imagine being offended by art. There is CLEARLY no malice in what she did and it was done only as entertainment with pure intention and admiration for the creator. Can't believe we have to have this conversation nowadays.
In South Africa, two white Stellenbosch University students got in serious trouble and were suspended with a “blackface” incident. They painted their bodies purple and sprinkled glitter all over them. They were space aliens at a space-themed party. A pic was taken of them and posted on social media. Unfortunately a filter was used on the camera which made their faces appear black. They were in some serious trouble and were labelled as racists. They had to apologise for the “offence their actions caused”. Yup, this crap cannot be made up! It’s only an issue if it suits a certain narrative…
There I a difference between black face and costume make up. Historically, black face is a caricature associated with and defined by racist stereotypes. Its painting your face to make fun of black people. This I not that. Thi is purely a demonstration of make up skill paying homage to another creator they admire. To say that any time a person alters their racial appearance with make up is racist is absurd. There is a big difference between shoe polish faced cartoon characters and special effects make up.
It’s racist that people even assume that she did that because she is racist. she did that to show off her makeup skills, not related to the skin color, her entire profile is about makeup
This isn't the old days anymore. People get offended way too much over stuff. I figure if no harm was meant, and the person who she made herself look like doesn't care, then everyone else can just shut it.
She's not making fun of black people like blackface did in the USA, she's just making herself look like this dude. It has nothing to do with race, only Khaby himself, and it's purely a compliment to how synonymous these types of videos are with him.
All I saw was a woman with great makeup skills. It was entertaining and also quite fascinating how much makeup can change a persons look. For all the people getting offended or think its offensive, I think those people have watered down the definition of racism so much so that even something like this is apparently racist now. I am not defending black face for people who have misinterpreted what I have mentioned, as someone else in the comments has mentioned, context is important. I believe the people who are offended or are offended on other peoples behalf on things like this, really need to pull their head out of their own arse.
So happy to see this comment section being aware of the difference between black face and art. My country is absorbing a lot of USA's taboos in all the wrong way. Some thing are only relevant because historical events. So they make no sense in places where those historical events didn't occurred nor affected.
After she did the make up, she did not mock the face, other than doing EXACTLY what they guy did which is not racist. People would rather find things like that to call racist rather than people actually being racist in life. Smh.
I'm not from the US and I think it's perfectly fine what she does. It's all a matter of intention and perception. My perception is she didn't mean anything bad with it. It was her intention to show off make up skills, including a popular guy. Thats it. No need to be offended. Following up: I can understand why things can be sensitive, but some people who are offended by EVERYTHING need to learn some level of self-mockery. And for those interested I'd like to add a youtube search assignment: "I was offended - steve hughes (linkto him in description)" (first hit)
In colombia it wouldn''t matter, we basically have a day called whites and blacks day on which everyone paints the others' faces with black and white paint 🤷🏾♂️
If she just put dark foundation on maybe it would be more offensive but she put effort into actually looking like the person. It's not that deep. She did a good job.
Context? It's more like cosplay. Didn't come off as her mocking his race But then again, it's totally valid if someone black feels offended due to the history of blackface.
Blackface was offensive because the people who did it were trying to mock black people. This is not blackface, it was meant to mimic a specific person as a veneration to that person.
In southern Germany, this whole discussion turned into two main groups. Those, who hate every foreigner and those who are offended when someone is even mentioning a skin color im puplic. "What you called him a black guy? You racist" . And a few who don't see the problem about black people being black and white people being white. You don't get to choose before you are born. And that woman ist truly talented!
Not only in the south of Germany..that discussion follow me everywhere 🤣 One day somebody got pissed and called me a racist because I called my boyfriend "arab" and my boyfriend himself laughed and told them "I call myself arab, my friends call themselves arab and i dont mind if she or someone else call me arab" This people are the true Problem here
I dont understand why people are so offended by things like these. Its like the affair, how a white person voice-acted a black character in The Simpsons for years and then people started sending hin literal death threats because "how dare he." Cmon. Art is art. Entertainment. Why must people bring race into everything.
She was also the same person who got attacked from trying to do a Kobe makeup, ppl are saying to make the Kobe white??? like??? If it’s white it ain’t Kobe no more😟
In Poland is a show which can be translated as your face sounds familiar. Show is a competition between musicians which have to sing and look like one of the most popular musicians. There was a lot of blackfacing
I’m not offended. Plus I’m white so that obviously means I have no opinion on racial matters. It blows my mind how many people get offended over shit that doesn’t pertain to them, “ but I’m black so it does” no no it doesn’t, but you can try and make it about you.
We should all start realizing when things are negatively and positively motivated. A great example of it being positively motivated is this video right here
This reminds me of a Pokemon Card that was produced in the late 90s. I think it was Koga's ninja trick or something. Anyway, it had a Swastika on it. It was edited for the international release, but the Japanese versions still had the swastika. People were outraged over it, but you have to look at the Japanese perspective. In Buddhist Culture, what we call a Swastika actually means peace and good fortune. Yet people outside of Japan will always get butthurt. It's all about perspective people
It's not offensive! She's not trying to make fun of him or insult his skin color, she's simply making a makeup look that looks like him bc she enjoys his content! It's like fanart but in makeup form :)
The song is "Yellow 13" by The Upside Downs open.spotify.com/album/4bfCKyU6ABQaV5C6sweJFP
She was making herself look like a specific person, not a specific race. Simple distinction between artistry and racism.
This ^
Exactly
She wasn’t making fun of him being black…she was being him because he’s funny, it’s a compliment.
Couldn't agree more
Yeah buuut i mean its kinda offensive

Bit of a puzzling compliment 😂
USA: fakely offended
Rest of the world: doesn't give a shit
That is exactly what was in my mind 😂
Right? Only in murica 😂
Yeah aside of the countrys that follow in the usa's footsteps, sadly my country has become one of those
As a Russian I can approve of that 😂😂
Blackface is a problem in Europe as well
To be honest I'm really impressed with her skills
Same ngl
To Americans: America is not the only place on earth. Thank you.
On another episode of Americans thinking the whole world is America:
It’s literally black face 😵💫
