Align Satellite Dish Without a Meter After Hitting it!

  • In This video I do a brief tutorial of re-aligning your satellite dish after hitting with a lawnmower or whatever. This is not instruction for a full install. I am assuming you know the approximate direction the dish was pointed and that it was only knocked over a little bit. A full alignment will require a compass and I don't get into all that here in this video.

    I don't usually bother commenting on these types of things, but using a cell phone outside to listen to the signal meter on the receiver with another phone inside the house was truly inspired. Never thought of that. It save me fifty trips in and out of the house. Nicely done.

    The biggest issue I have with my Dish reflector is, when setting the angle, there isn't a specific indicator for the angle. What do you go by? The center of the tightening bolt in the angle scale or ? The skew has a tiny little pointer to indicate what number it's pointing at. The dish angle adjustment doesn't. What do you use?

      HI, I don't know if Dish has changed the new satellite dishes to be any different than the older ones I'm used to (Dish 500). I haven't installed one for a little while. The old ones used to have a scale for elevation angle and a different one for skew... You can get into the menu on the dish box (OR Google your settings by zip code) to find your azimuth, elevation and skew settings according to your zip code. The elevation scale was on the bolt where the mast went through the dish. There's a pointer there. The skew angle was closer to the dish and I believe it had 2 bolts with nuts to adjust and tighten that one.. (if they haven't changed the setup). If you're using a compass to find the azimuth angle and the dish doesn't seem pointed to where it should be it's because of magnetic declination. In my area it's only 2 degrees west, but some areas in the US are as much as 25 degrees! So depends on your location. I don't know if the numbers that Dish gives you account for this or not. They might be true north numbers.

    Bare ass bones yeah I got that myself I'm not paying almost $200 for a satellite line tool and I have to agree with you too next better than one but you have to have two phones in order to do it

      Yes or 2 walkie talkies and leave one keyed up so u can hear the tone... But yea if u don't install Sats as a job, an expensive meter isn't the way to go... Thanks for the feedback.

    Nice and easy to allign one satellite. What about the other two? Dish has three satellites 119 110 and 129.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  Před 6 lety +2

      In this particular case, I am dealing with 72 and 61.5.... This video isn't about putting your dish together from scratch, it's just about re-aligning it if it were hit. The dish skew angle is unlikely to change if it's just knocked out of alignment. With a proper skew angle and a plumb mast, the other relevant satellites should align once you get one going good.... just do a check switch to verify they are all working..

  • @red2965
    @red2965 Před 2 lety +1

    0h you'll bend it but I can tell you how to fix that but if you hit it you'll bend that dish and that's put you through bolt through your pipe and the mounting bracket

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  Před 2 lety

      Hopefully if its not bent to much it'll bend back without warping and not working at all..

      Man I'm not gonna say no because I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but, when I looked up a safe way to clean a dish, another article said using matte paint rather than glossy is better because glossy or reflective surfaces can throw the signal where it's not supposed to go.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  Před 2 lety

      It's a little tricky. One thing is, is it a new install? Are you pointed at a lot of trees? That could be a problem.. If it's an existing install and it worked before, you just have to play around with it until the tone comes in.. unless the dish is damaged.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  Před 6 lety +1

      Depends on which satellite youre trying to lock in on... for 110 and 119 it's (71600-71699) Azimuth/ 214 Elevation/
      43 Skew/ 120 for other satellites just go into your system menu and pull it up and you can choose the satellites in there and give you the coordinates. Thanks.
