    On my 47 Willys CJ2A flathead engine I use non-detergent SAE 30 and add Zinc to it to prevent the lifters and camshaft from wearing down prematurely.

    When you're pulling the oil filter out of the housing you need to take it and let it drain into a drain pan not back into the canister because the old oil the filtered oil the non-fertile oil is dripping right back in your can and back into your engine

    Did you leave the old oil in the filter cannister There is about a quart of old oil in the canister. ?

      I also qustioned about that. I used a large syringe to remore the old oil from mine then cleaned the cannister with a shop towels

    SAE 30 Oil? I use 20W50 in my Willys.

      SAE 30 per TM 9-803 lubrication guide. Nowadays, engine oil viscosity is more of a personal preference it seems.

    I have a 1943 Willy Jeep that has not been running for a few years. Today, I installed a new battery. The fan turns and it sounds like it is trying to start. I realize it probably needs oil change/filter change, gas drained. Any tips you can offer? Or suggest videos I could watch? Thank you

    The oil you used is 30W. Does it have a Zinc additive in it ?

  • @bazthehandyman
    @bazthehandyman Před 6 lety +3

    There is always oil left in bottom of filter canister as arlingtonguy says...bad design cos doesn't drain so you have to empty it out.

      Even I feel the same, but then it was the pioneering days of automobile design. The filter directly on the block I am guessing was a Mercedes Benz innovation..??

    • @bradh5613
      @bradh5613 Před 4 lety

      Mine has a drain hole to drain the canister. But it's a 48, perhaps later models have that?

    • @bazthehandyman
      @bazthehandyman Před 4 lety +1

      @@bradh5613...All same.. Won't get the last bit of oil out because that drain is not right at bottom.

    • @Paladin1873
      @Paladin1873 Před 4 lety

      @@bradh5613 My '47 has a drain hole in the canister as well, but the head of the drain plug is rounded so much that a socket wrench slips off. I think a previous owner may have replaced the plug with one that has the wrong thread. Anyway, it's stuck and I don't want to risk damaging the unit by using gorilla force. Also, the drain hole sits above the generator, so draining it risks getting oil all over the generator. Instead I use an old rag and some paper towels to sop up the oil and to clean out the interior of the canister. I've read that some enterprising owners use a turkey baster for this job. I may have to try that.

      bazthehandyman My is going to get a draincock, with a hose on the bottom, to dump the oil where the engine drain plug is. Enough of this foolishness. :)

    Do you still add lead to the gasoline ? My lead container says ½ oz. to every 5 gallons -- sound about right ? Also, 87 octane or premium (91or higher) ? Thanks

    • @WW2JeepandRifle
      @WW2JeepandRifle  Před 5 lety +1

      I don't use any lead substitute additives; just straight 87 octane -- ethanol-free if you can find it at a marina or other locations.

      @@WW2JeepandRifle -- ok thanks on the gasoline tip 👍🏼 In addition l'm fabbing up a hand-crank starter for my 48cj2a as they're almost impossible to find. Most bumpers have that factory hole in it for placement to the crank nut. Have you ever seen or messed with any hand cranks ? (Which l think are awesome as a fail safe to a dead battery) I think it comes factory sometimes along with an air pump stored under the rear bench seats ? -- thanks much! And also great vids !
