Samay Ke Sakshi On the occasion of Golden Jubilee of Independence in 1998, Samay Ke Sakshi TV series was telecast over Doordarshan. This series was produced by Darpan Video India and written and directed by Brijendra Rehi.
This interview was broadcast on Doordarshan on August 19, 1998.
Samay Ke Sakshi features eminent personalities of India who are fortunate enough to have witnessed the first day of Independence in 1947. Belonging to different strata of society these eminent persons, most of whom were between 18 and 25 years or above at the time, had one thing in common - a strong desire to see the Motherland free from the clutches of British empire.
Samay Ke Sakshi, truly lives up to its title in that each of the episodes bears testimony to the views and feelings of eminent Indian personalities and veteran freedom fighters who recollect the moments and memoirs of the time when they first came to know about India attaining Independence.
Dr. Usha Mehta
Dr. Usha Mehta was a Gandhian and freedom fighter. She was born on March 25, 1920, in Saras village, Surat district. She died in Mumbai on August 11, 2000.
Her father, Shri Hariprasad Mehta, was the district judge, and her mother, Smt. Geliben Mehta, was a homemaker.
Dr. Usha Mehta did her primary education in Kheda and Bharuch. She got her BA in 1939 from Wilson College, University of Bombay. In 1942, when MA studies were going on, Mahatma Gandhi started the Quit India Movement against the British Raj, in which she actively participated. During this time, along with some of her colleagues, she started an underground radio station. In November 1942, she was arrested on charges of clandestine radio transmissions and sentenced to four years' imprisonment.
After her release from prison, she became a lecturer in logic and philosophy at Wilson College from 1947 to 1949.
Usha Mehta was awarded a PhD degree by Bombay University for her research on the social and political ideology of Mahatma Gandhi.
After receiving a Fulbright scholarship from the US in 1953-54, she went to Cornell University in the US to study political science.
She received many awards in various fields and was also honoured with the highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, by the Government of India in 1998.
Dr. Usha Mehta has tried to make people aware through her writings.
