    Got to take exception to ‘they only hunted what they needed’ Indians would run herds off cliffs killing far more at a time then could be processed. Warrior ‘clubs’ would often pledge and kill for ‘one hundred buffalo tongues’ for ceremonies like the sun dance. Leaving most of the meat to rot. In most tribes a newlywed couple would go off for a bit of a honey moon. The new husband only killing what the couple would eat that night. War parties often killed and left much meat on the ground, as they were moving fast and had no time to process more then a meal or two.

    • @ArizonaGhostriders
      @ArizonaGhostriders  Před 5 lety +2

      Yes, and I should have been more specific. Once horses were implemented (the era we are talking about), hunting changed. "A good horseman could easily lance or shoot enough bison to keep his tribe and family fed"

    • @Kalroy
      @Kalroy Před 5 lety +3

      Yeah, it's more along the lines of, "they killed what their technology allowed." When they did kill dozens, or hundreds, at a time they took the choicest cuts and left the rest to rot. Apparently they were just like humans everywhere.

    • @maiidegeese5052
      @maiidegeese5052 Před 5 lety +1

      Fair enough, but here is some food for thought.
      In early 1800s there are estimated to have been millions of buffalo roaming the plains. By the 1890s, there were only a few hundred left on the brink of extinction. It wasn't the Plains tribes who did that.

    • @jeffreyrobinson3555
      @jeffreyrobinson3555 Před 5 lety

      Maii Degeese plains tribes contributed too.Almost half the robes taken during the great hunt of the 1870s was from Indian tribes, many were also taken by the Mettis.
      Then historically we see the extinction of the longhorn buffalo, woolly and Colombian mammoth ground sloth short faced bear American horses and American camel all within a thousand years of the invention of the Clovis point

All over his land and the nearby land were old animal bones and one day a man came and told the all the people who lived on farms in the area to pile up all the bones and that the man would come back in a week to purchase them to turn them into glue. They did that but the man never came back and so to this day there are giant piles of animal bones all over that land.

(the stock looked like couple of 2×6 oak boards glued together about 4 feet long, with very little shaping done on it just so you could hold and shoot it.) Forget shooting it, you could have hit the bear in the head with it and killed it. We didn't know how he could even carry the thing! 😱

However as the 19th century advance wild game became more scare. By 1890 the wild west was closed. Today we have little of our 19th century methods of life left. However in Alaska we still live somewhat like the 19th century, wild game is still on the table of several areas. The old days maybe gone but not forgotten.

    And people think hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2 is hard. Can you imagine having to depend on a gun-often times loaded with bullets you made yourself-and your own tracking skills, patience, and resistance to the elements just to avoid starvation? There’s no doubt that our forebears were far tougher folk on average than we slouches today.

    45/110 with a black powder charge has a muzzle velocity of 1322 fps. Thats not really a slouch of a vartridge. Yes, modern ammo is like 2300 fos but thise old rounds also had a 500 grain bullet

    I know it's late, but, I gotta know cause my own research hasn't produced much luck. How common was bow hunting in the old west. Obviously firearms had pretty much phased out the bow and arrow but there still had to have been some use in hunting. By natives or even settlers? My buddies bow hunt so the practice obviously hasn't gone away, so there had to be some usage of it.

      Definitely used by Native Americans. Not sure how many others did.

    Dunno about out west, but out east, once natives were able to sell their goods like pelts, they pretty much outstripped the ability to replace.
    It's normal to only take what you need when there's no real commerce. We're more alike than different.
    A lot of people still love large calibers for hunting. The new gimmick is faster flatter bullets, but they cause a lot of meat damage. A big no king slow bullet just puts a nice big hole. The problem is people don't want to learn ballistics and how to shoot.
