Your comment….funny. This weekend is the 40th anniversary of my marathon PR (2:25) back in the days of flat coke and bowling shoes for racing (no super shoes). I am so glad as I close in on 70 that I was able to run that fast. I told someone the other day that I don’t even like to drive that fast anymore…..good luck!

Matt, I know I'm not the only who says that you're a running hero and idol. As someone who's just gotten into running over the past year the SE content was already inspirational but this series was next level. Having taken two shots at a BQ this year but being two minutes outside both times, I've definitely dealt with that feeling of being fitter than your race time reflects. Your positive attitude and honesty keep me going!! The fact you ran 2:24 while injured makes me know you were in sub2:20 shape and I know you will only keep getting after it 👊

A great series and brutally honest. Its been great watching your personal journey on this and its even more relatable. I was about 50 metres from the finishing line cheering you and Nick on after pulling out of Berlin myself 4 weeks ago with injury. Onwards and upwards. ✊

Proximal hamstring tendinopathy is something to look into. It sounds like what you’re presenting with. I’m a massage therapist and a runner, currently dealing with this. Basically it’s a strain of the hamstring tendon right where it meets the sits bone (ischial tuberosity). It can become strained due to increased volume, speed work or hill work. I’m happy to provide more info or share what I’m doing to help it along.
Great job out there. I’m headed to Chicago next weekend and I’ve also had doubts of making it to the start line. I will think of your perseverance while I’m out there!

sharp pain at the very top of hamstring - this might be piriformis being pinched. I changed the technique by slightly rounding the direction of the leg, (similar to your very good hand motion) as if convexing and releasing the hip joint activity and it helped. The most help I got from the intensive rolling massage, even during training. Hope it helps. Chapeau for the result, really

Matt! I feel like you did run sub-2:20, and you should think like that going forward. The hamstring issue is bad luck, but doesn't speak to your ability; and you won the mental battle by sticking with it and finishing the race. Now that you've begun regular strength training, I'm sure you'll sort things out and get to another marathon starting line in even better shape. All that training will carry forward. And now you know you can fight for your goal and finish even when conditions aren't ideal.

Brilliant series of videos. Such as shame to have the hamstring problem at the last minute. We know you can do this and it's good to see you get back up and be positive. The marathon needs everything to come together on the day and it's quite amazing you finished without coming completely off the rails. Well done. I think that sometimes when you ease off before a race that your muscles relax and slight injuries can present themselves that otherwise were hidden. I've had this happen twice this year where a niggle just comes from nowhere when easing off. I missed last weekends 6 stage for this very reason. Good luck with the next attempt.

Not everybody has the courage to show everything from inside, and be ready to accept a straight 3rd disappointment. Congratulations for the series and I really hope that you will do a Season 2 of Sub 2:20 Marathon Project.
There is one thing I would like to point out of this video. Maurten recommends AGAINST mixing their Drink Mix with electrolytes, which you did for the race. Obviously, this was not the problem, but they state that it interferes with the formula and you get a regular drink (like if you use other than 500ml).
Finally, if you dare to go to Málaga for some winter training, I'll be happy to join a few sessions. A little bit slower here (2:55) but hey, maybe for an easy run :) ! And also you can consider Maratón de Sevilla in February, which is pancake flat, sea level and well organised, and gives you enough time to rest + 12w buildup.
    Good luck!

Sorry to hear it was that tough for you. Last year I struggled with hamstring issues from the sciatic nerve for three months (hurt the hamstring pretty bad in a 5k race). My hamstring tendonopathy comes and goes but strength work can definitely aggravate it. It's a fine line between doing what you need and doing too much and overloading the muscles, and also balancing it with your training. Personally I don't do any strength in the taper week but as I have a flare up now and am running the Melbourne Marathon in 4 days I'm thinking it might need to be longer 🙄

Really feel for you Matt, regardless of the result watching and sharing your journey was epic. You learn more from the bad days than you do the good. Already I can see you are going to be ok, analyse this block and try to put it right for the next one. I wouldn't be surprised if the strength training was the cause, I think with all the miles your doing at different intensities your body is all ready going through the mill adding that dynamic in as well is always going to risk a danger of overloading your body. The one rep deadlifts still cause me to wake up in cold sweats, as i am sure you have heard from others and probably board of hearing by now. Everyday is a school day bud. Heal well and i look forward to the next journey you take us on, really is a quality series and all runners can relate too, regardless of their level. All the best Matt

one more thing: you were talking about achilles in 20th minute: I had had this problem for ten years: not very problematic, but it was always there. The suddenly I started to do raises on front foot on a step with both legs EVERY NIGHT beefore bed. It's been now five years without any problems. I believe it has to do with body mass: I am heavier than you, so I had learn how to deal with it. Try it. I am 61 and went through many miles. The only thing I haven't mastered are the cramps after 25k, because I run too fast. I'll try slower.

Amazing effort ! Careful the hamstring doesn’t turn into high hamstring tendinopathy - nightmare to get rid of .

The marathon is a crazy thing! Loved your candidness and honesty in this interview and this series as a whole. I've taken a lot of inspiration off your journey, your workouts, and your words. I'm going sub 3 in my second marathon ever in a couple weeks. "I know I can and I will". Look forward to the next one!

You should definitely try to beat 2:20 again. I really think you can do it one day. I hope you fix that hamstring issue for good.

It will be interesting to see how you get on with that injury..I get a similar injury when I train for a marathon and always struggle to get rid of it. It hurts after half way in the marathon and I have to block out the pain and I get frustrated because like you it affects my time after all that training. I'm only a 2.50's marathoner so nowhere near your level but it's all relative.

I’ve followed the whole series… it’s been inspiring! I got back in to running in my 50s… and trying to beat 1:40 for Half before I move up to Full distance… so your content has been really helpful. Currently 3 weeks out from a half… and my quads are troubling me leading to sore knees afterwards… any advice? Cheers Nic
